Athena shurgged. "Because we humans are very vain. We sometimes care too much about how we look. Like me. I used to hate my red hair and freckles, and I would take a very long time in front of the mirror, styling and coloring my hair. But here the mirror is important because you need to see how the dress fits you and looks on you."

Coda hugged her and said, "I think you're very pretty, like Gen, she has a touch of red in her fur." She took a deep breath to fight the urge to cry that came to her, she wondered if it would always hurt when she thought about them.

"Thank you," Athena said with a smile. She could see Coda's eyes beginning to water, so she put her arms around the girl, hugging her reassuringly. "I hope you'll be able to be happy with us. I know you miss your old life and your old family, but you're safer here. And we already love you very much."

"Well, you were with them a long time, and they took care of you. It makes sense that you would miss them. But they wouldn't want you to be sad. They're fine, and although I'm sure they miss you, they want you to be happy and safe." Athena straightened up and ruffled Coda's hair. "Everything is going to be fine, OK? And I'm sure you'll see them again, maybe during the full moon."

"I tried to find them last time..." Coda said looking at the floor, she didn't know where they would be. "I think they must have moved to a different cave."

"They probably did," Athena said. "They probably thought it was safer if they moved on. Usually, wolf packs don't stay in one place for very long. I wouldn't worry about them, I'm sure they're fine."

Coda looked up at Athena, "Can you teach me to be like a human girl?" She thought if she was going to live like a human girl she should know how to act like one. She looked at the dresses and wondered how other girls acted when shopping.

"I sure can," Athena said. "But I hope you'll always be as sweet and curious as you are now. A lot of people, especially young people, are very selfish and shallow. I wouldn't want you to be too much like them. I like you the way you are; it's what makes you special." She smiled warmly. "But I can teach you how to do things that other girls can do."

Coda smiled, "I don't like selfish people, that's how Goss is, he only thinks of himself." She picked up a dress, "We should get back to what we came here to do, shouldn't we?"

Athena nodded. "Yeah, we probably should," she agreed. She allowed her thoughts to wander back to Alastor. She wondered how he was doing, and if he was feeling any better. She felt a bit guilty for leaving him alone so long, but it was important to make sure Coda was taken care of as well. "Can you get out of the dress on your own, or do you need me to help you?"

Coda laid the dress back down then said, "I can take it off." She took the dress off then as the other dresses were a different style she said, "You might have to help me try those on..."

"Of course," Athena said. She picked up the first dress and saw that it was closed in the back with a zipper. "Here, watch me. See that thing in the back right there? You pull this down to the bottom, like this. That's called a zipper. Then you step into the dress and pull it up. I can pull the zipper up for you, since it will be hard for you to reach." She held the dress out for Coda. "Would you like to try the zipper yourself?"

Coda took the dress and looked in amazement as she pulled the zipper up, she smiled and pulled it back down. "Wow..." She looked up at Athena then asked, "Where do I put it to step in it?"

Athena watched Coda play with the zipper for a minute, her heart swelling with love. Coda was such a unique and special girl. She was exactly what she had always hoped for in a daughter.
When Coda spoke, Athena had to quickly brush at her eyes to wipe away a tear. "Here, I'll hold it for you, and you can step into it that way." She knelt down, holding the dress open for Coda.

Coda stepped into the dress as she asked, "Are there books that show wolves?" She had always wondered if there were wolves in other places. "I would like to see what other wolves look like and other animals... all I know about is the ones in the woods."

Athena helped pull the dress up and held out the sleeves for Coda to put her arms through. "Oh, yes, there are plenty of books about wolves. Books with pictures, and stories, and information... all kinds. We can go to the library later, if you want, and look them up. There are books about almost anything, really. Whatever you want to know about. Some books are stories--made up ones, but others are true and tell you more about some things."

Coda put her arms through the sleeves, "Can they help me tell me who I am?" She had always wondered what her real name was, she had sometimes found herself dreaming about a family. "I want to know what my name was... I don't want to know about my real family... just my name..."

Athena thought for a moment while she zipped up the dress in the back. "Well, that's a little harder, since we don't really have much to go on. We can certainly try, though. We'd have to look in different kinds of books, though. Maybe even old newspapers. Do you have any idea how long you were with the wolves?"

"I think since I was ten." Coda said, "I don't really remember anything before I was bit, I just remember pain." She rubbed her neck where her scars were, they tingled when she tried to remember past that pain. She looked in the mirror at the scars, she had never seen them that good before.
