"Wouldn't that be fun? It seems like the only things kids do for fun here is go to Quidditch games and Hogsmeade weekends," and now they didn't even have those this year, due to the tournament and the hogsmeade attack. "And getting all dolled up is fun too," she added, smiling. She stepped back and spun around under Jeremy's arm before stepping close to him again and leaning her head against his shoulder. Jeremy nodded his agreement. Things really could get boring at school, and now, with the restrictions on Hogsmeade visits, they didn't seem to have a whole lot of options. "Yeah, there definitely needs to be more things for us to do... places we can go. We shouldn't have to spend all our time stuck at school, you know? I mean, after the attack, of course they had to cut down on the Hogsmeade trips, but we can't just stay cooped up here all the time, either. Maybe they could find a way for us to have special events or activities every weekend... Just so we have something fun to do." He happened to glance up in that moment, and he caught sight of Julia and Nolan entering the ballroom. "Hey, Nolan and Julia are here," he said, waving to them. Alenna lifted her head and looked over to where Jeremy was waving. She smiled at Nolan and Julia, both who were dressed to the nines, and pointed at the table nearest them, to show that she and Jeremy saved them seats. "We should stop, so we can chat with Julia and Nolan," Alenna said. Smiling at him she took his hand. "We'll have another chance to dance later.

"I'm always a sucker for a guy who can dance," Julie told him, smiling brightly. "I'd love if you could show me what you learned in Spain. If this music ever started... do we know what the hold up is?" She glanced towards the door. It felt like the champions were deliberating over national matters or something at this point, and she could tell the rest of the students were going to get restless soon. "Oh really?" Daniel asked, smirking and raising an eyebrow at Julie. "Well I promice that before the night is through, You can see what I can do." "I think the champions are waiting to be introduced by Dumbledore or McGonagall," Daniel said as he looked over his shoulder to the general area of where the four champions were. "They're some brave kids, I could never have handled being a house champion when I was their age," Daniel admitted. "But I do hope they hurry up, I don't know how much more patient the other kids can be," He saw the students sitting at tables or getting punch, even a few dancing to no music at the deges of the room. A good handful were even still outside in the entrance hall. Daniel watched as Dumbledore then approached the girls and handed them an envelope. "See, things are getting settled," Danile said. Most of the kids had flooded inside and took seats, some were shuffling feet and dancing to the sound of a crown of students, and others were by the punch bowl, mostly young men getting refreshments for their dates. "Things should be getting started soon," Daniel noted. "Shall i escort you to your seat Juliette?" he asked very gentlemanly, offering his arm and a smile.

"Come on," Julia dragged Nolan along and met up with Jeremy and Alenna by the table.
"Hey guys," Julia said. "Lennie you look stunning Girl," Julia laughed. If she was going to get all dolled up for this shin-dig, she was going to go all out on the girlyness of it all. Usually, Julia was very much too much tomboy, tonight would be a fun experiment on how she could handle being all girly.

Maxi opened her scroll and read it quietly to herself. A dance marathon? Really? That seemed simple enough. She looked over to Seth, who was reading over her shoulder. So she had three dances with Seth (she was a little bummed it was only three) and then a dance with Frank, Thane, and Sam's date, whom she didn't know. after that, it was up to whoever would dance with her.
Glancing at Sam, she had a gut feeling that this would be more of a popularity contest than a test of endurance. she knew the guys at school would line up to dance with Sam, but Maxi was just Maxi, she had a close-knit group of friends. Maybe she'd get a dance with Gage, and a couple kids from her house, but then what?
"What are you thinking?" she asked Seth after he had time to read the scroll.

"Yea, it'd be great," Nick said. "You wouldn't be imposing, my mother would probably fuss about you for hours, she loves when we have company," Nick smiled at her. "And my dad and Ash will take you under their wing and tell you embarrassing stories about me and Sarah will follow you around and ask too many questions until she drives you absolutley insane," he laughed as he spun her around again and brought her back to him.
He was getting more comfortable with Roxanna, talking about something familiar, having fun. He stepped back though, and smiled at his date for the evening. "Best save the rest for when this party really gets started," Nick said with a smile and a wink.

"i'm thinking," Seth said as he read over the scroll Dumbledore had handed Maxi. "That these guys you have to dance with don't try to make a move on you," he smiled, kissing her cheek. "Other than that, piece of cake, you've got it in the bag," Seth said, quietly so that the others didn't hear him.
"I mean, you just have to dance all night, how hard can that be?" he shrugged.

Roxanna smiled back and nodded, taking the initiative and leading Nick off of the dance floor. She took them to a table that was empty and sat down, still thinking about meeting Nick's family. She was nervous, but she had good reason to be. It wasn't every day a guy she likes invites her to spend the holidays, or at least a part of them, with their family.
"See, now I'm worried that I'll take too much attention away from you!" She said with a laugh. "That would be really great, though, and I'll try to handle your sister's questions. Thanks, Nick. It means a lot to me," She said, her voice dropping to a whisper for the last few words as if she was too embarrassed to speak them louder.

"Right now I seem to be here with you." he said with more charm than anyone would have thought him capable of. Truth was Caleb could in all likelihood seduce the pants off of almost anyone were he to give it an honest shot, the fact that his studies consumed him was the main deterrent, that and he had never found anyone he truly cared to seduce. Apparently that was about to change. It wasn't a conscious decision he made, but rather something inside him was bursting and he was just trying to keep up with it. "Besides, Sam would rather die than have her big brother on her arm all night," that was a lie he knew, Sam wasn't like that, still it was true of most teenage girls, " and Christine already has her big brother on her arm." he explained, "I'm a chaparone." that made him feel suddenly older and inwardly he frowned. "Well, if Christine's with her brother, and I can't imagine Sam not wanting the same thing." Adele smiled as the next thought entered her mind. "And given the fact that you're a chaperon, I'm betting she doesn't have a date." Caleb certainly seemed like the over protective big brother... she had those, once in her life. The thought made her frown, and she took a deep breath, looking around the room. It would be her next, one day. "Does being a chaperon mean you're not allowed to dance with any of your students?" She surprised even herself by saying it, as often as she tried to push him away from helping her. But she was here, and what could one dance hurt? He smiled again when she spoke about Sam, his little sister certainly could handle herself, and the thought of Sam without a date was amusing if only because the idea was ridiculous. He might have shared the comedy in his thoughts when she asked her next question and all thoughts of laughter fled his mind, in fact he couldn't think at all. Suddenly his palms were sweaty, his breath was short, and for the life of him he couldn't even remember his own name. "I-I'm not certain..."

Sam took her scroll gingerly, sparing a wary glance toward the other champions, she had no idea that tonight there would be a challenge, and although she liked to think she was ready for anything that came her way, she wasn't exactly excited over the prospect that tonight she was going to have to "battle it out" in her rather extravagant ball gown.
Taking a deep breath she braced herself for the worst and read the scroll, a dancing contest, no an endurance contest, she remedied, and like Maxi said a popularity contest. Sam was certain that if the entire floor knew it was this sort of contest houses would line up to dance with their own house. She was glad it was discreet for now.
In all likelihood she was the most prepared for this sort of challenge, if any of the others only knew that to her it wouldn't be a challenge of endurance, but rather one of inner strength. Samantha had hosted more than a fair share of balls before, and of course in an attempt to live up to her mother's impossible standards she knew she would be able to last for hours and hours, days even, on her feet, dancing and charming whomever she needed to charm.
"Nicolas," she called, "I believe I'm going to have to forgo the after party." she said with an amused mild smile. There probably would be an after party somewhere, but her remark was rather meant for amused indifference to the challenge, a show of determination that concealed her inner discomfort.

Once Regina took her scroll, she read it carefully. Great. This was a challenge of coordination, something she thought she lacked. "For Merlin's sake," she muttered as she read the part. She wondered how she was going to make it through this competition. There wasn't anyway that she was going to give up easily. She had a whole house that she had to represent, there was no way that she could just give up easily. It would end up disappointing a lot of people, including herself.
She could still win the tournament or at least fight harder, right? The Goblet of Fire wouldn't have just chosen her for no reason. She could do her best. Glancing to Thane, Regina sighed. She thought she could last a while without sleep, or food, but when it came down to the coordination part, that was something else entirely as was the part with continously having a partner. Hopefully there would be someone willing to dance with her. If she was dancing, it was alright, she wouldn't step on their toes, well not intentionally anyway.

Because the only reason I went to the ball at all was to have a chance to dance with you. That was his true answer, which he knew he could never tell her. Because no matter what Jeremy might have thought, Neil believed that Bobby was most definitely out of his league. She was so far above him, that if his league were to explode, she wouldn't even hear the sound for three days. And yet, here he was, sitting with her. It was so unbelieveable that Neil was half-tempted to pinch himself to make sure he wasn't dreaming. "I'm not really very social," he replied, which was true. "You're practically the only friend I had there at the ball. And besides, I couldn't pass up the chance to leave the ball with the prettiest girl in the room." He looked down at that, hiding his face as he pretended to study his brownie. It was actually almost a suave thing to say, the kind of thing Rabastan Lestrange would say. Except that Neil wasn't just saying what he thought she wanted to hear. He truly meant it. Bobby smiled. Normally, words like that would make her blush. Or they should. Coming from Rabastan Lestrange, they would. But Neil was her friend, and of course he didn't meant anything in that sort of way. "Thanks, Neil. That's sweet." She finished her cheesecake, and got up to put the plate on the counter where one of the house elves took it right away. "Well, we have the rest the night.. anything you want to do besides go back to the dance?"

If only she could understand that he meant it exactly as he said it. But she didn't see him that way; in her eyes, he was just a friend. Was there a point in time where it simply wasn't possible to ever move beyond friendship? Was he forever doomed to be in love with a girl who would only ever see him as a friend? Was there anything he could do to make her see him differently?
He looked up at her from his brownie, a smudge of chocolate on his face. "I'm serious, you know," he said. "Sometimes I think you don't realize how pretty you are. You have a smile that could light up a room. Don't ever let anyone make you doubt that, OK?"
He could have gone on to tell her how he thought she was the prettiest of her sisters or how she was the prettiest girl he had ever seen, but he didn't want to lay it on too thick in case she wondered why he was saying it. He just sort of felt that, for some reason, she had felt overshadowed by her sisters or that someone had somehow made her feel inadequate, and that was why she wanted to leave. And Neil wanted to be the one to make her feel better again.
"Anyway, I've always wanted to find a secret passageway in the castle. I've heard there are hundreds. Want to go exploring with me?"

Bobby paused. She was used to Neil really finding his voice when he was just with her. He wasn't so shy when there weren't so many people around.
She smiled, reaching out to wipe the chocolate from his cheek with her napkin. "Thanks, Neil. That's sweet of you."
She didn't get it. Bobby was dense and naive, it seemed. She was also over thinking about boys for the night, considering that Jeremy had put her in a bad mood. Linette was probably having a fantastic time with her date, and she imagined that Callie would leave the dance early, too.
"Exploring sounds like fun. Let's do it. I should probably change, but you know... I kind of like the dress."

He felt his cheeks flush red when she wiped the chocolate from his face. It was an innocent, sweet gesture, but it made him think of how things could be in the future, if only he ever got the nerve to tell her how he felt about her.
“I like the dress, too,” he said, smiling at her. How could she not know how good she looked in that dress? “We’ll just try to stay out of any cramped spaces where it could get torn or dirty. Although… I have to admit, I’m not crazy about these dress robes. The collar’s too tight or something.” To illustrate his point, he tugged at the collar again.

Rayne frowned at Bryce. "That's horrible," she said. Honestly, it was cruel to turn a guy down if he worked up the courage to ask a girl. "I'm sorry." Maybe it hit awfully close to home with her and Nate... everyone goes away in the end. Her attention was, once again, drawn away by Lola, who it seemed was already flirting with Bryce. She wondered who would be the first to ask the other to dance. "Oh, Eves is here with Rabastan Lestrange. I believe she's already with him." And she would get to hear all about it later. She hoped Rabastan at least made her happy for the night, if nothing else. Glancing at Bryce, she quickly explained, "Evelyn is my best friend. She's in Gryffindor." Bryce shrugged. "Eh, she was out of my league," he said. "I knew it when I asked, and I expected her to say no. She already had a date, anyway." He could actually see her across the room, with her date and her two sisters. He had probably been crazy to ask Linette Sanders out, but he figured it was probably his only chance. At the mention of Evelyn, he nodded quickly. "Yeah, I know Evelyn. She's a sweet girl. I hope Rabastan is nice to her." His tone, however, indicated that he didn't think that was likely. Rabastan was a well-known playboy, and he really hoped Evelyn wasn't getting her hopes up about this date. She was setting herself up for a heartbreak. "Well, really. Any girl that makes you feel out of your league isn't really worth it, is she? But it seems like everyone who was going to be asked got asked pretty quickly, too." Nate had asked her, naturally, and after some trepidation, she said yes. And then he left school, dropped out to go home and take care of his grandmother. It was noble, of course. She just missed him sometimes. She frowned again at the mention of Rabastan. "Eves is well loved. He'll have a whole mob after him if he hurts her."

Lola's eyes bounced between the two, Rayne and Bryce. She could call them Brayne is they ever got together... that'd be cute.
She adored Rayne, and they had some Greek heritage in common. Or at least, she assumed they did. With a name like DiCostas, she had to have some Greek in her. And Bryce seemed friendly enough, so she figured she was in good company for now.
Waving her hand, she said, "Evelyn is a strong girl. She's in Gryffindor after all. I'm sure she'll be fine. If she wants to have a little fun, who cares?"

Ultimately, he agreed with Lola. Evelyn was a big girl, and she was allowed to make her own decisions about who to date. Bryce wouldn't have dared to tell her otherwise. And yet... He definitely thought she could have chosen better. Maybe she was just looking to have fun, and she wasn't planning to get attached, and if so, she woiuld certainly be fine. But if she was getting her hopes up that she'd be the girl who tamed Rabastan Lestrange... she would end up broken hearted. And every Gryffindor would be ready to fight on her behalf. Bryce had a feeling the line would start with Rayne.
"Well, I hope she has a good time. I think, after everything that happened in Hogsmeade, and with Katie's death... we need to have a little fun, you know? So, how 'bout it Rayne? Whenever this thing finally starts, would you like to dance?"

"Why thank you," she told him, taking his arm and nodding. Somehow, spending the evening with him seemed like a nice idea.

"They're dress robes... of course they're uncomfortable." She ran a hand through her still curly hair, biting her lip as she debated what they should do. "Well, listen, I like the dress and I don't want to change, but we could go back to Ravenclaw so that you can at least get comfortable. I'll even wait outside if you don't want to let me in," she added with a quiet laugh.

(I think maybe we should pull this out into a separate thread...)
Neil laughed lightly. “Um… actually, it’s no big deal. I kind of wore muggle clothes underneath my dress robes. I just… you know, I didn’t know what else to do. I figured no one would know the difference. So, I could just stop by the common room and ditch the dress robes… I wouldn’t mind if you came with me.”
There was something sort of exciting to him about having a girl come with him into the Ravenclaw common room, especially since it was Bobby. He was never sure if it was allowed for people from other houses to go into the common room, although he’d seen Jackie Frazier do it on occasion to visit Dean.
