Daniel was laying in bed, feeling bored. He was not used to just laying there, but he was told to rest. He was just a little bit sore, but other than that, he was fine. Sean had spent the night in the room, although Daniel was pretty sure his brother did not really sleep. He wished that there was something else he could do. Sean was stubborn and he knew that there was no way to really make his brother listen. There was something else going on, but his brother wasn't going to tell him at the moment.
While he was laying there, he was wondering how fast things were going to go back to normal. Daniel wasn't a fan of the fact he was probably going to be sensitive to sunlight for awhile but he could deal with it. While he was wondering about sunlight, he wondered how Victoria was doing. He was supposed to mentor her and he wasn't sure who else she would follow. Besides, he already missed messing with her. She responded to him and that was something most girls didn't do.
Putting an arm under his head, Daniel stared up at the ceiling and started to count the tiles.

When Victoria came into work that morning, the news was all over the Ministry. The German Aurors had caught the killer--a vampire, no less. There had been injuries, however. The German woman had been injured, and apparently so had Daniel, who had been bitten by the vampire. When Victoria heard that bit of news, she felt a surprising sense of panic. She'd only just met the guy... was it right that she should feel so worried about him?
Of course, she had nothing to do that day without Daniel to shadow, but it was more than that. She felt, oddly, that she would miss him if he didn't come back.
After a boring morning of rearranging things on her desk, Victoria took an early (very early) lunch and decided to visit Daniel. She even picked up a small bouquet of daisies along the way.
She arrived at the hospital and was shown to Daniel's room, but she didn't go in right away. She stood in the doorway and smiled at the way he was counting the ceiling tiles. "Hey, when you're done with that, maybe I can bring you some files to research," she teased.

As he counted the tiles, he mouthed the number and pointed to the tiles as he counted. Daniel wasn't expecting any visitors for the day, let alone the person that the voice belonged to that filled the quietness of his room.
Once he heard her voice, he turned his head and let his arm fall to his chest. "Hello there sweetheart," he said with a half smile, half smirk. "As for those files, I think we can leave them where they're at right now." He gave her a wink and then noticed the flowers in her hand. "You know my favorite flowers," Daniel said teasingly.

"Oh, don't let me interrupt," Victoria said, moving into the room. "Clearly you had some important work to do there."
She set the daisies down on the table next to his bed, then sat down in the little chair next to him. He looked good, although pale. She could see the bandage patching the wound on his neck and she shivered unconsciously.
"Yeah, well, they reminded me of your sunny personality," she teased. "Also, I heard you might be sensitive to sunlight for a while, so I thought these would help. And don't call me sweetheart. I keep telling you my name's Victoria. That isn't too hard to pronounce, is it?"

"Oh, so you've already been so worried about the fact I wasn't in the office today, that you've been listening to see what happened." A light smirk appeared on his face. "I'm touched really." There were only a few times that Daniel never joked around. He really did know how to be serious, but sometimes the joking around seemed to make the world feel a little better even though he knew it was becoming darker. There had to be some sort of lightness.
Daniel pretended to think for a moment about her name. "Hmm, well that name sounds foreign to me, and I think it might be a little difficult to pronounce. I like the name sweetheart a lot better." He winked at her. "It's better than blondie, is it not?"

"No," Victoria answered swiftly, not missing a beat. "I had nothing to do without you to shadow, so I had a lot of free time to listen to office gossip. Some people are actually calling you a hero, just because you got bitten." She rolled her eyes playfully at this part.
"And for the record," she continued, putting her hands on her hips, "I think I actually prefer blondie. I don't let just anyone call me sweetheart, and you don't make the list."

Daniel never liked the term 'hero', nor did he ever want to be labeled as one. He rolled his eyes as she said some people called him one. "I'm no hero," he said in a more serious tone. There was a seriousness about him for a moment, but Daniel didn't want to ruin her visit with a serious atmosphere.
"I'm just some guy that happens to have a weird hickey that happened in a way that I would never want it to happen." Daniel broke out into a smile. "And you know you did miss me. Who else is going to tease you and make you put on a front that you don't like me? Come on. I can see it in your eyes that you were completely lost without me." Again he winked at her.
"Oh, well since you don't like for me to call you sweetheart, I think I'll stick with it. I think it suits you. After all, you are a sweetheart for checking up on me."

Oddly enough, it was that one moment of seriousness that appealed to Victoria the most. It was fun to argue with him and joke around, but it was nice to see that there was more to him than that.
"If by 'completely lost,' you mean 'bored out of my mind,' then yes, I suppose I was. How am I supposed to shadow you if you're lying in a hospital bed, hmm? You'd better get well soon, or I'm just going to have to sit here with you and count the ceiling tiles, too."

"You'd stay here with me?" Daniel put a hand to his chest. "I'm touched, really." Although he would never admit this out loud, but he did miss seeing Victoria already. He could joke around with her and she would have some sort of comeback to him. Other girls would more than likely look appalled at him if he joked around with them. Victoria on the other hand, she was something else. Of course, there was no way that Daniel was going to say that out loud.
"I'm glad that I can be of some entertainment to you. I should be leaving the hospital soon, whenever the nice lady says I can go. Then I will be back in the office and doing work. I hate lying in this hospital bed, however, it did turn out to be a little bit better now that you're here and I have some one I can talk to rather than continuously count ceiling tiles."

"I'm supposed to be shadowing you, so I'd have to stay here, wouldn't I?" Victoria teased. "You could teach me all about the proper way to count the ceiling tiles, or which kind of pudding cup is best in the hospital. Or, as I said, I could bring some more files for you to go through with me. I'm sure Mrs. Boulware wouldn't mind."
She didn't want to admit it, either, but she liked it better here with him where she could joke around and have a laugh. The office seemed kind of stuffy most of the time, but he livened things up.
At his second comment, she smirked and arched her eyebrow at him. "Oh, really? I brightened your day, did I? Sounds like you're the one who was missing me."

"I can actually tell you which pudding cup is the best in the hospital," Daniel said with a triumphant like smile a child would have. Pie and pudding were two of Daniel's favorite things and Sean would tease him about it too. Plus, Daniel knew that if he ever wanted pie, never to send Sean after it because he would always forget it.
"I have to admit," he started, "I have missed you lighting up my day. I mean, the office is so dull and lifeless and when you enter the room, it just brightens everything up because your hair is so blonde." Daniel grinned. "But seriously, thanks for the flowers sweetheart." He gave her a wink. "When I return to the office, we will not be going through anymore files. I hate going through files, so that means I will more than likely be taking you out on cases. I hope they know that as soon as I'm out of this hospital, I am returning to work. I cannot lay in a hospital bed for too long."

"Oh, it's good to know that you're an expert on something," Victoria replied. "So which kind is best? Is it chocolate or vanilla? Or maybe butterscotch? I'd imagine rice pudding and tapioca would be out of the question, though..."
She couldn't help but laugh a little at his triumphant expression, but that laugh turned into a blush as he described how she brightened the room just by entering it. Even if it was a joke about the color of her hair, it still somehow felt like a genuine compliment, and Victoria was surprised to realize that it had a profound effect on her.
"I didn't think you'd want to stay here very long," she replied, not sure whether to thank him for his comment and choosing instead to comment on the rest of his statement. "In fact, I thought I might have to hold you back from escaping."

"The vanilla chocolate swirl is actually the best," he said with his childish like smile once again. The statement about her hair, was in fact a compliment, however Daniel was not extremely good with giving compliments. Usually he would turn awkward, but if he could joke around there would not be any awkwardness.
Daniel couldn't help but laugh when Victoria mentioned her holding him back from escaping. "I've thought about escaping," he admitted. "However, I don't have a reason to slip away at the moment now that I have you here to visit with me sweetheart."

"Ohhhh... that's good to know," Victoria said, laughing. That little-boy smile of his made her heart beat faster, but she was able to explain this away by the laughter. Yeah, it was just that he made her laugh. "I never would have guessed."
She was having entirely too much fun, and she was beginning to wonder if it had been a good idea to visit him. She might start to like him or something... Or maybe she already did.
"Well, good," she replied. "I'm glad I was able to keep you in one place and that I didn't have to to hold you down. But you better not try anything... I'm a lot stronger than I look, you know." To emphasize her point, she flexed her arms as if to show off her muscles.

"Hold me down," Daniel repeated with his eyebrows raised. "Well well sweetheart, you just go for it don't you?" He was teasing her again. Of course he twisted her words around on her. "I mean, of course I would just let you do whatever you wanted, you wouldn't have to hold me down." There was a teasing smirk on his face.
Daniel laughed as she flexed her arms. "You do have quite the muscles there sweetheart. "

"I should slap you for that," Victoria replied airily, tossing her hair over her shoulder. "But I won't, because you're already injured. I wouldn't want you to have to stay here any longer than you already do."
He actually looked rather vulnerable lying in that hospital bed, and it kind of tugged at her heart a little bit, not that she was about to admit that to him. It also made her realize that the job she was about to begin was dangerous, and that she could just as easily end up here, if it could happen to someone like him.
"So, what exactly happened last night, anyway? I didn't get the full story... I don't think anyone really knows back at the office."

Daniel smirked. If she did slap him it wouldn't be the first time and it more than likely wasn't going to be the last.
As Victoria asked about what happened, Daniel's smirk fell and he had a more serious look on his face. "We were all in the professors' room and then Kryshna came in," he said in a lowered tone. "Sean was outside in a wardrobe, waiting just in case something happened like her getting passed us. She was fast, really fast. There wasn't really any time to think. She wasn't expecting us to be there, so I think that made her panic. Before I knew it she was behind me. There was no way to escape from her at the time. The female auror, she was stabbed and then the next thing I knew, she bit me. The male auror sent us both flying through the door and Kryshna was stabbed with the wood from the door."
He stopped for a moment. It wasn't the event that Daniel was worried about anymore, it was Sean. "Something happened with Sean, and he won't tell me what happened. I know he had an encounter with someone who I suppose was there with Kryshna, but something else happened. I tried to get him to tell me, but he won't mention it."

Victoria was breathless as she listened to him talk about what happened the night before. This was the kind of thing she was going to have to get used to. She told herself she was ready for it, but was she really? It was one thing to say you were ready, but another to actually be faced with the situation and know what to do and not panic. It sounded scary.
"Wow... It's a lucky thing you weren't hurt worse," she said, sincere for once.
She wanted to ask him how he knew what to do, how to react, but she didn't push for it. Instead, she tried to imagine how she might have reacted if she had been in that situation. She probably would have tried to fight, which would have most likely resulted in more injuries.
"He's probably just worried about you right now," she suggested. "He doesn't want to worry you and possibly affect your own recovery. Maybe once you're out of here you can try talking to him again."

"I doubt he's worried about me," Daniel said with a shake of his head. "He knows that I'm far too stubborn." It was true. He was pretty sure that Sean wasn't worried about him. The brothers had a connection that could not be explained. They were extremely close and they knew when something was wrong with the other one, even if they didn't say anything about it.
"There's something going on and he is not going to tell me right off. I'll have to figure it out eventually, because he's like dad when he gets stubborn." In a way, that was completely true. Sean was more like Eric even more than Daniel or Sean realized. "I could possibly get it out of him, but it'll take some time."
Daniel was quiet for a moment. This was probably the most serious he had ever been when he was talking to a female. Not wanting to be continue to think on it at the moment, he looked to Victoria.
"So tell me, how much training have you had when it comes to actual fighting? I don't mean dueling with someone, I mean actual fighting."

"But you're worried about him, it only stands to reason that he's probably just as worried about you," Victoria pointed out. It sort of made her smile to think of how Daniel and Sean were both so protective of each other. She didn't have any brothers or sisters, so she didn't have anything to compare that kind of relationship to. Sure, she had her friends... Lorelei and Nathalia and Marcy, as well as Nell, but it wasn't quite the same.
"I like when you talk about your brother, it makes you seem almost like a nice guy or something," she teased, slipping back into her half-flirting.
But she grew serious again when he asked her about fighting. She actually had a lot of experience in this, probably more than he would have expected. "Well, I had the typical training when I was preparing to start here, but I already had some experience. I spent some time traveling after I finished school and I ended up in Tokyo for a while, and learned a little karate. When I got back, I took some lessons in kung fu and self-defense... I'll admit I haven't had a lot of real-world practice yet... just training. But I'm betting I could still kick your arse."
