Sean chuckled at his friend at the admission.
"You didn't miss much. Damon's trying to dance with a married woman, and Hauden's experiencing his own Spanish Inquisition. And, being the law enforcer that I'm supposed to be, I feel like I have to go look into a possible mob boss. Overall, it's been pretty uneventful."
Actually, he was thinking that now might be a good time for him to escape- head home and do some more research, maybe owl Danica's mother, Aurelia, to see if there'd been any kind of development. He eyed the opening behind Damon's chair, strongly tempted.
"Yeah, we don't know for sure that he's a mobster, but he looks like one, and he's very... odd. Always looking over his shoulder, like he's expecting a mob hit or something," Paige contributed. "I've never seen the girl you're talking about, though... hey, maybe he's holding her prisoner!"
It all seemed like a bit of a laugh, but if they knew how close they really were to the truth, they probably wouldn't have found it so funny.
"He's kinda hot, though... for a potential mobster. You, on the other hand, don't look much like a mobster," she added to Damon.
But seeing that Damon's attention was back on Caroline, Paige decided to resume her interrogation of Hayden. Turning back to the auror, she smiled at him. "Are you always this quiet?" she asked. "I bet you were a Ravenclaw, weren't you?"
Hayden gave a small laugh. "I'm not exactly quiet, just observing," he replied. He always everyone else. That was one thing that made him a decent Auror. He was aware of his surroundings. "But I will admit, I don't talk too much. I like observing more often than talking. You can often learn a lot more about someone that way." He gave her a smile. "Ravenclaw is correct. Although I wasn't exactly the typical bookish type. I did read a lot, but Sean, Damon, and T kept me away from the books all the time. It was better that way actually. I like to have a little adventure from time to time."
As if suddenly remembering that the other three boys were there, Paige cast a quick glance around the table at each of them in turn. She already knew Sean a little, of course, but she didn't know Damon, and T had hardly spoken. Based on what she knew of Sean and what little she had observed of the other two, she had a pretty good idea who the ringleader would have been.
"I'm guessing it was mostly Damon over there," she said with a smile. "But tell me, are you close with your cousin Roland? You have a lot of aurors in your family, don't you? Is that why you became one?"
"I'm still behind the idea Damon got caught up in the Mob," T chuckled. It was just something Damnon WOULD get caught up in. Next thing any of them knew, he'd need help fleeing the country or something.
"Sorry I'm such bad company," T said. "I think I've been working in the library too long, I dont know how to talk to humans anymore," he smirked. He saw Sean eye the exit. If Sean left, T was playing 5th wheel with Damon and Hayden. His eyes widened slightly as he looked at Sean. "Don't leave me," he whispered hopefully.

Hayden laughed. "Oh yes, it was him alright. Still is." Damon was always going off some idea, or just going with the flow of things. Most of the time things were not fully thought out so Hayden made sure to go along with it so nothing would go seriously wrong. Of course, Hayden had his fun through out school. He wouldn't complain about that.
"Roland, yeah, we're pretty close. He's a best friend really." He paused for a moment and took a drink from his glass. "I know he's still trying to sort some things out. As for becoming an Auror. I did think it was a family thing to do it. Of course I looked at it as they have watched out for me my whole life, so who watches out for them while they're doing their job? Thought that I would take on that job."
How could Paige be anything but impressed? He said all the right things, and more importantly, he seemed genuinely sincere about them. His responses were pure and unrehearsed. He was like Roland "light"-- the same commitment to duty and honor, the same respectful attitude, and while he lacked Roland's casual arrogance and bad-boy swagger, he more than made up for it with his sweet, boyish charm. Though he was very serious, there were hints of a sense of humor beneath the surface. He knew how to have fun, and he knew when it was appropriate to let loose.
If she didn't have Austin, Paige would have almost been jealous of Nathalia.
She smiled at him, tucking a brown curl behind her ear. "Well, Hayden. I have to tell you, you're passing my test with flying colors. But tell me, can you dance?"

"Oh, so this is some kind of test," he said in a joking manner. Of course they were friends with Nathalia. More than likely she was just making sure he was alright. Hayden did understand, even though it was very little, how girls worked sometimes.
"Dance? Well, all the Ferreras are taught how to do a few ballroom dances," Hayden admitted. "We're usually taught at an early age. Just the 'proper' thing to do I guess. As for dancing like you would in a club, I've done it maybe once. The brilliant one over there was the one that took us all out and refused to let us observe or just sit and talk with each other." He laughed. "So I suppose I can dance, just a little. I couldn't promise too many smooth moves or anything, but I can promise I'm not some guy who looks like a complete idiot."

Paige smiled warmly. She had a plan cooking up in her brain; just another test that she fully expected he would pass. Because Paige had been a dancer, she considered herself an expert on the subject. If he couldn't dance, if he had no rhythm whatsoever, that would be a very big strike against him. Roland, while claiming to not enjoy dancing very much, had been surprisingly good at it... and he was good at other things as well. She wondered if it ran in the family.
"Well, I used to be a dancer," she informed him, holding out her hand to him. "So why don't we take a little spin on the dance floor? Although, I should warn you, I have a bad knee. I might not last very long."
Which was why she would pass him off to Nathalia for the rest of the dance....

Hayden was not completely blind. He did understand the idea of friends meeting a person that their friend had interest in. That thought was what put Hayden a little more at ease. If Nathalia was sending in her friends to check on him then he would show Paige what he wanted Nathalia to know.
"Really? I bet you were and are still a great dancer," he offered a smile. Hayden took Paige's hand and slipped off the stool he was sitting on and cast a glance in Sean's direction before looking back to Paige. "Well, I'll make sure we're careful." He followed her to an open area. No one else was obviously dancing, but he didn't pay any attention. Dancing was something Hayden actually liked doing, but there wasn't any time to do it when he was an auror. There was also the fact that he wasn't exactly a guy to go up to a girl and ask her to dance.
The song wasn't exactly fast, but it wasn't really slow either. Ballroom dancing was not right for the moment, so he just followed how the music led him.

Dancing with Hayden was not all that different from dancing with Roland. Paige remembered how he'd tried to resist, claiming he didn't like dancing, and yet he'd turned out to be surprisingly good at it. Hayden had obviously learned from the same teacher.
But this wasn't about comparing Hayden to Roland. This was about trying to find out if Hayden was good enough for Nathalia. And so far, he'd passed every one of Paige's tests.
But there was still one more question.
"What are your intentions with Nat?" she asked, leaning close and speaking in a low voice. "Seriously."

As the music played, he danced with Paige. He had a feeling he knew what question was coming up. After all, he would have the same exact question for anyone that Liam or Sheena liked.
Although he knew the question she was going to ask, Hayden's eyebrows rose. "Honestly, I really like her," he said in a whisper. "I want to get to know her more. There's something about her that I can't figure out. I don't mean that in a bad way. She's interesting and I like talking to her." Hayden wasn't exactly sure if he should tell Paige everything, but he had a feeling that she could see right through him. "Plus, I think she needs to be taken out and treated like the lady she is. Something right needs to happen and she needs to be shown that not all males are the same. I like her and I am not going to hurt her."
Paige nearly tripped over her own feet as she listened to him talk. He sounded exactly like Austin, so much that it scared her a little. She could fully recognize in listening to Hayden that he was exactly what Nathalia needed, even as she knew that Nathalia was going to react exactly the way she had when Austin said these things to her. She was going to freak out, push him away, even run away.
Girls like Paige and Nathalia were so used to being treated like they were "disposable," that this was all they expected from guys. That they would use them and toss them aside, like they didn't matter. But every girl deserved a guy who thought the sun rose and set on them, who would never toss them aside like a used gum wrapper. Every girl deserved a guy who wanted nothing more than to make her feel special and beautiful and loved.
Paige had found hers and she ran away from him. Nathalia would almost certainly do the same. But maybe Paige could prevent her friend from making the same mistake she had.
"OK, listen to me," she said seriously, leaning closer to him. "My advice is this--don't come on too strong... not right away, anyway. Give her room to breathe. She's not used to guys like you. She's going to get scared. Don't let her chase you away... but don't pressure her too much, either. take it slow. OK?"
Damon grinned boldly at her, and any little inhibitions he might have had were slowly starting to fade as the alcohol took effect. But he also knew that if he drank much more, he wouldn't be able to stand up straight, much less dance with her. And he definitely wanted to dance with her. If her husband didn't dance with her, he was more than happy to fulfill that need for her.
"Well, I'm nothing if not entertaining," he declared. He clumsily got to his feet and extended a hand to her. "May I have this dance," he asked, ignoring the fact that the only thing to dance to was the atrocious version of "Yesterday" being warbled off-key by a very drunk wizard who kept periodically breaking into sobs.
"Oh, dear," Caroline said as he stood up, her voice quiet but a soft laugh following this statement. Damon was cute and kind of adorable, although she was certain that were he sober, this would not be the effect he was going for.
"You may," she said, getting to her feet as well and giving him a little curtsy. When he placed his hand, she looked over his shoulder and gave Nathalia a look, half amused, and half telling her to come dance with either T or Sean. Her friend just shook her head, and Caroline turned her attention back to Damon.
