Riley thought, for the first time since she had become an Auror, that she disagreed with what she was told. It was probably good for her, something to remind her that she wasn't just doing this out of blind faith.
She smiled and nodded. "All right. I'm sure Roland and I will work just fine together, actually," she said, not lacking enthusiasm, though it was forced. She would do what needed to be done for the assignment, and she would expect the same of Roland.

Angelique was no fool, and she knew perfectly well that Riley was holding back her true thoughts. Angelique rarely held anything back, and she almost wished Riley would yell at her and complain, as Roland had done. But she was already exhausted after the meeting and hearing complaints from all sides about practically everything that was going on in the wizarding world. So it was just as well Riley wasn't fighting her on this.
"Very well," she said, nodding at her. She reached into the pile of papers that were stacked up on her desk, and, after a moment, produced a thin red file filled with parchment papers. "Here's everything we have on the murder investigation so far. Look it over, then share it with Roland. Now listen to me... if you two are able to figure out who murdered the girl, I need you to bring the killer in. Don't let the murderer be killed, OK? Roland gets outraged when children are harmed, and he's been known to kill suspects in fights, rather than bringing them in. But this one.... the public needs to see the killer go to trial. And before you make an arrest, make sure the evidence is airtight. It's bad enough that we couldn't make the charges against Greta Weiss stick for the murder of my niece. We can't let another child killer go free."
Angelique's voice was shaking at the end of this. Whenever she thoguht of Greta Weiss and the terrible crime she had managed to get away with, Angelique's control slipped. So help her, if she could ever get that woman alone in a room... only one of them would be coming out alive. Angelique intended to be the one.

Riley frowned at Angelique's warning, and leaned forward. "I'm sorry to assume anything, or anticipate anything, really... but he does become outraged, as you say, and ruins anything we're working on... well, I can't tolerate it. And you already told me that we're not partnered to babysit the other, so I won't. I am going to expect him to do his job and do it well, and if that's going to be a problem... well, I will handle it. But I need you to tell me now if I should expect problems. Please."
Roland would rue the day he got in the way of her and her mission objective, and Angelique may as well be warned now.

Angelique nodded, glad that Riley was at last speaking her mind on the subject. "I have already spoken to him about the issue and the need for him to control himself. I don't anticipate that it will be a problem, now that he knows what is expected of him. And as I said, I do need a little of his edge for this case. He's especially good at interrogations, and you are going to need to do quite a bit of that for this case."
What she was more concerned about, actually, was his tendency to go off on his own for things. He had done it on his first assignment, when he had been assigned a partner. After talking with him, she was now beginning to doubt whether he was going to be able to drop the baggage from his previous case and give the new one his full attention.
Angelique hesitated for a moment, debating with herself to bring up the subject. In the end, she thought it best if Riley knew what to expect. "There is another thing I want you to be aware of with him," she said. "His previous mission... it didn't go well. I will spare you the details, because it's not really my place to discuss them with you, but what happened... it wasn't his fault. He acted correctly and the death eaters he was chasing preyed on his weakness. He failed to catch them, and I can tell from talking to him... it's eating at him. I'm not sure he can let it go. I'm working on that case myself now... but I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he tries to keep working on it. I'm just warning you, because he may be a bit... distracted."

Riley held her breath so that she couldn't sigh like she felt she needed to. The more Angelique spoke, the more it sounded like she was going to be babysitting Roland. He was a loose cannon whose mind was on other things, and he didn't play well with others. Riley would have gotten a kick out of this had it been a personal issue, but no, it was an assignment, it was business, and it was going to be a headache.
She nodded. "Thank you for the warning," she replied softly, the red folder in hand. "If there is nothing else, I will go look over this and then... meet with Roland."

Angelique smiled at her. "Don't sound so miserable," she said. "Despite what I've said, he is very good at his job, and you shouldn't underestimate him. I have every confidence in the both of you."
With that, she nodded at Riley. "Thanks again, Riley. I think that's all I have for now. Good luck, and make sure you keep me updated on the case regularly."

Riley smiled tightly. "I'm not miserable. I promise." She left it at that, deciding that no more should be said on the subject, except to add, "I trust your judgement."
File in hand, she stood and walked towards the door. "Either I or Roland will be back to report as soon as we learn something. Thank you for your time."
She left the office a bit downhearted, but was glad that Roland was already gone. Despite what she said, she wasn't quite ready to deal with him.
