“That’s another reason for the partner,” Angelique replied. “We need to capture these people, not kill them. With the exception of this last time, you have killed a death eater on each of your last three missions. How are we to get information out of them if you kill them? I need someone to keep you in check.”

Roland was appalled. “Keep me in check?” he repeated. “Seriously? So I am in trouble, then?”
He sank down into the chair in front of her desk. “Look, I didn’t set out to kill those guys. But they were aiming to kill me, and I had no choice. What was I supposed to do?”

“Stun them. Immobilize them. Disarm them. I know you learned all the appropriate defensive spells. Those should be your first choice when in a fight. Don’t shoot to kill. Just because they are doesn’t mean you should do it, too.”
Angelique sighed and shook her head. “Look, you’re doing a great job. But you get a little intense on the job. And it’s risky. What about the time before last, when you tortured a guy you were convinced was a death eater?”

Roland pressed his lips together tightly in annoyance. “He would have broken down eventually. I was not wrong about that, I’m sure about it.”
Tapping his fingers on the arm of his chair, he let out a sigh. “OK… so I didn’t always handle things quite right. Why do I have to have a partner?”

“Whining doesn’t become you, Mr. Ferrera,” Angelique said, her tone amused. “You have to have a partner because I say you do. Yes, I know… you don’t work well with others. It says so in your file. Even on your first training mission, you ignored your partner’s orders and went ahead on your own. You could have very well failed or even been killed; the fact that you pulled it off was the only reason you weren’t fired. You’re good at what you do… but you need balance. And we all have to learn team work. I think you and Riley will make a good pair.”

Roland was still furious, but he took a few deep breaths to calm down. “OK, fine. But what about the guys I was chasing before? Like I said, they know I know who they are. Given the tendency of these guys to hide their faces, they can’t be too please that I know what they look like. If I’m being taken off the case, what does that mean? Surely someone’s going to go after them.”

“You leave them to me. Just make sure you visit the sketch wizard to give descriptions of the death eaters you saw. Then I’m going after them, because I think their MO is the same as the guys I’m trying to track. They randomly attacked a muggle neighborhood in London and killed a bunch of muggles and left a path of destruction in their wake. I think they may be the same guys. If so, then I’ll be the one bringing them in, and your statements will be crucial to getting them convicted.”

OK, that was fine… but he was still likely to be in danger, and so was his family. He was a witness now… that was far more dangerous.
“Perhaps my family should be placed in protective custody,” he suggested. “As long as these guys are out there, I don’t trust them not to come after them to get to me.”

Angelique thought about that for a minute. “Your brother and sister are in Hogwarts, right? I can have a couple of aurors keep a special eye on them. Your mother and father should be fine, and Cyrus is going under cover, so hopefully his disguise will keep him safe. I don’t think protective custody is necessary as of yet. But we’ll see.”

Roland sighed. It would have to do. “OK, fine,” he replied. “But if anything happens to them….” He trailed off. He didn’t even want to think about what he would do if anything happened to any of them. He would die before he’d let that happen.
Slowly he stood up, resigned to his fate of having a partner. “If this doesn’t work out, could you consider reassigning me to my own assignment?”

Angelique just smiled. “We’ll see,” was all she said. “Thanks again, Roland. Now please send in Mr. Tonks, if you don’t mind.”
She looked down at the papers on her desk as a way of signaling that he was dismissed.

Roland clenched his fists in annoyance. He wasn’t quite thrilled with her response. But he was going to have to learn to make the best of it.
What didn’t kill him would make him stronger, right?
Quietly, he stepped out and nodded toward Ted. “You’re up, mate,” he said. Walking past Tonks, he headed over to his desk, his eyes unwillingly wandering over to the desk of Riley Neves.

Ted nodded, his shoulders dropping just a bit. He had tried to catch Andromeda's eyes, or her attention, or anything, but she refused and sent in Roland. All he could think was how the hell was he supposed to earn her trust if she would never come near him?
He waited tensely while Roland was in Angelique's office, and now was slightly defeated. He knew he looked terrible. The only reason he didn't smell like alcohol was because of this very reason. He has suspected a meeting with Angelique. But it was obvious that he was angry and something of a loose cannon.
He entered her office quietly and sat, all without saying a word.

Riley sighed as she watched Ted enter their boss' office. She wanted a word with Angelique as well. A very controlled, private word. She was getting a partner, which meant she had messed up somehow. If there were areas she could improve, she thought she should know what they were.
Her eyes followed Roland back to his seat, and seeing the nearly empty meeting room, she asked off handedly, "So who's getting punished, you or me?"

Roland narrowed his eyes in annoyance. Typical that she would assume that being forced to work with him was a punishment of some kind. Of course, he'd assumed the same thing. And although Angelique had specifically avoided using the word, it really seemed that it was, indeed a punishment.
"I am, apparently," he said coldly, the corner of his lip twisting into a bitter grimace. "Look, this situation is obviously not favorable for either of us, so I think it would be best if we only spoke to each other when absolutely necessary."

Riley felt slightly better knowing it wasn't her, but then she realized she was put onassignment to babysit, and she frowned. She didn,t want to have to keep an eye on her business and his.
"Actually, I think it would be wise to get to know each othe." She would eventually retract this statement, but it seemed like a good idea now. "The better we know each other, the better we can work together."

Roland let out a sharp hissing noise. Of course she'd think that. He honestly couldn't imagine what he could possibly have to talk with her about. He barely opened up to the people he actually cared about.
He studied her a moment, his arms folded across his chest. When it came to his job, he could, at times, be somewhat arrogant. It was simply because he strongly believed in the work he was doing, and he knew he was good at it. So this partner business really stung. No one ever told Alastor Moody he needed to learn balance and control.
Finally he gave her an icy smile. "Fine," he said. "And how do you propose we do that? Should we sit down for a spot of tea and crumpets?" Sarcasm was dripping from his voice.

Riley smiled almost sickeningly sweetly. "Is that how you'd want to do it? Was never much of a tea and crumpets kind of girl myself, but you look the type I suppose."
She didn't want a partner anymore than he did. She was good at her job, and he was just going to get in the way. He was the one in trouble, so she had more of a right to be annoyed.

Roland made a face. "Hardly," he replied. He was still sitting at his desk, halfway across the room from hers, but he had no desire to get up and talk to her. In fact, they'd already been conversing considerably longer than he would have liked.
"Look, I don't know about you, but I have no interest in social interaction. I'm here to do my job, and that's it. So you can spare me the attempts at getting to know each other."
