Aubri blinked, not expecting the question, and not really having an answer to it. No one had ever asked before, she had to think about it.
"Well... boys and girls get along differently," she replied at length. "I wouldn't imagine I'd fight as much with an older brother. Not that Lyra and I fight a lot," she added quickly, not wanting anything to get back to her sister. It was all right f Aubri was the one saying it, but Heaven help the person who went to Lyra behind her back.

Aubri's defensive nature about the relationship between her and her sister made Dominic chuckle. "It's alright, you know, if you and Lyra fight. All siblings do, or so I'm told. And besides, she has good reason to try to make your life hell." The quiet noises of the field had been overcome by the loud, rowdy patrons of the Hog's Head, which they were passing at that moment. He had chosen wisely in not taking Aubri there tonight. It looked as though a fight was just starting up. Unconsciously Dominic placed it hand on her back to quickly guide her past the rough looking group and away from any possible danger.

Aubri was quiet while they passed the Hog's Head, her eyes watching the patrons coming in and out of the building, though her mind was on what Dominic said just now. She almost jumped when she felt his hand on her back, but managed not to make a fool of herself. She inwardly rolled her eyes.
"I don't think that's fair. Why would she have any reason, much less a good one, to make my life hell?"

Dominic continued to walk as he looked at Aubri, evaluating if she were joking or not. He came to the conclusion that her question was an honest one and that she really didn't understand. He would let her know then. "Do you not see it? Lyra is jealous of you. She has to rely on certain...tricks, to get a bloke to pay her attention. You clearly don't have to do that, Aubri." He smiled and continued, "giving you hell is her way of getting back at you for being prettier and smarter."
As they walked they rounded a corner and appeared on the High Street. The Three Broomsticks sign was hanging over the door, only a few buildings down. The noise from the Hog's Head had died away and more pleasant ones could be heard. There were still people going about their lives; moving in and out of shops, chatting with friends under a street lamp. The sky above them was clear enough to see a blanket of stars. This was the environmnet Dominic had wanted to bring her to. It was a shame that they had to pass through that side street to get here.

Aubri opened her mouth, but closed it quickly, thinking better of what she had been about to say. He already knew she didn't take compliments well. She didn't want to give him more of a reason to say so.
But this time, she wasn't even sure how to take that compliment. She thought he was dead wrong. Guys flocked to Lyra. Granted, guys looked at her too, but it was Lyra they wanted.
She didn't even realize it, but she was blushing, and the tinge in her cheeks could be seen in the light of the streetlamps. The open, warm atmosphere was escaping her, because she was focusing soley on him.
"That's nice, and I don't really want to argue with you, but Lyra is beautiful."

Merlin, she was hard to compliment! And this was less a compliment and more just telling her how it was. He couldn't believe she could be so smart and so daft at the same time. "You're right, she is." That was easy enough to agree with. Lyra was beautiful. But she was also very harsh and cold. And it was true that she persuaded more than she attracted. "You both have very good genes," he said with a wink. He wasn't going to argue with her, but he wasn't about to let her think he was lying to gain access to any part of her. Aubrielle was clearly the more attractive of the two. But yes, if she wanted to say Lyra was beautiful too, it wasn't a lie.

Well, there it was. At least he had admitted it. Aubri was quiet then, as there wasn't much else to say, and she finally looked around. It was a side to Hogsmeade she'd never seen before, mostly because she had never been here when there weren't a hundred other students on all sides of her. It was more relaxed, and it made her a little more relaxed in turn.
"I can see why you do this," she said softly, letting the other topic go.

She was silent for a long moment and Dominic knew he had messed up. He didn't like lying, but perhaps he should have to make her feel better. He certainly hadn't meant for that truth to be an insult or anything. For heaven's sake, he had said she was prettier than her sister. Why did women always have to turn things around. He felt the need for a long sigh but held it in. That would have only made it worse. He was about to say something to fix this condemned conversation when she changed the subject. He gladly accepted it. "Yes, its nice here after dark. I thought you might appreciate it. So many don't."

Aubri smiled a little. "Really, they don't?" She asked, and was brought back to her earlier question, wondering how many girls he had brought here. "I can't imagine why. It's... relaxing."
She found herself rolling her eyes again. She should just keep her mouth shut. Maybe Lyra was right... she made a fool of herself everytime she spoke.
Shaking her head, she took in a long breath and let him lead the rest of the way.

He hadn't meant to insinuate anything by his comment but it seemed he could say nothing right when it came to Aubrielle Newbury. This was completely new to him, being lost when it came to a girl. He didn't know where to go to next.
Luckily they had arrived at the Three Broomsticks and he ushered her in, hoping she wouldn't take offense to him holding the door for her. "Where would you like to sit?"

"Wherever there's..." Aubri trailed off when they were inside, then smiled and finished, "...room." This place was always packed on Hogsmeade weekends, and it was near impossible to find a place to sit.
It wasn't empty now, but there were more choices, certainly, and the whole place was much quieter.
"Can we sit by the window?" She asked, turning back to him.

Her surprise at the availability in the room was cute and made Dominic smile. At least this he could do right. "Of course." He led her to one of the window tables away from the door and pulled out a chair for her. Then he caught Madam Rosmerta's attention and called her over. "I'd like a butterbeer, please." He said to the older woman. "What would you like, Aubri?"

After they sat down, Aubri's attention was drawn out the window where she watched a few people walking by. It was a completely different place like this, though she felt ridiculous admitting this to Dominic, so she said nothing.
His voice pulled her from her thoughts.
"The same, please," Aubri said to Rosmerta rather than Dominic as she tore her eyes from the window.

Rosmerta nodded and left to get their drinks. Dominic turned to watch Aubri who was looking away. She was such a puzzle when you got up close. Before having really talked to her he just thought she was another gorgeous rich girl who actually had a brain. Now he could tell that she was a gorgeous rich girl with a brain, who also was very hard to impress. He had tried everything he could think of without being deceitful about himself and his personality. With anyone else he would have given up hope, but there was something he knew he was missing with her. She was complicated but it didn't deter him. "Are you still thinking that you'll get caught?"

"I'm sorry?" Aubri looked back at him, her chin in her hand. All suspicion she had earlier was gone from her eyes, and for the moment, she was just a girl experiencing something that intrigued her.
"Oh." She paused to think about it, and shook her head. "No, I guess I wasn't. But I am now, thanks," she said, smiling to show that she was only kidding. "Actually, I was watching that couple." She pointed out the window at a young couple holding hands. "They can't keep their eyes off each other." And she had been thinking how badly she wanted that.

He followed where she had pointed and watched the couple for a moment. She was right, they couldn't keep their eyes off each other. They almost looked like walking statues, very happy ones. "Yeah, you get a lot of that around here after dark. I think most people find it romantic out here, away from the city. It's a lot different than in the daytime."

"It is romantic," Aubri said, watching him. "What, do you think it isn't? A starry night, a quiet restauraunt, breaking the rules?"
Madam Rosmerta returned with their drinks, distracting her for a moment while she said thank you and took her own. Sipping it, she looked back at Dominic. "What's your idea of romance then?"

"I never said it wasn't romantic. And breaking the rules aside, it is. The rule breaking just makes it more exciting." He too said his thank yous for their drinks and paid Madame Rosmerta before she left. He didn't like to run a tab this late at night, in case a professor came in and he had to sneak out quickly.
"Do you like romance? I know most girls do, but I would hate to assume something that might not be true."

"Every girl likes romance a little now and then. Any girl who says different is lying."
Aubri leaned back in her seat, allowing herself not to sit so rigidly straight. It was strange, how she felt around him. She was on guard, waiting for another insult or another reason to clam up, but she felt like she could relax around him, too. And like he could see right through the 'polite girl of high society' routine.
"I still want to know your idea of romance. You're asked to plan the most romantic night possible... what do you plan?"

Dominic chuckled. "That's a loaded question in itself, and coming you from you I'd think it doubly dangerous. I could answer with the most romantic evening anyone were to imagine and you'd think I was queer. However, if I were to give a pathetic answer you'd likely never come out here with me again. So..."
