It had proven harder than expected for Kyle and Amelia to coordinate their schedules. It seemed that whenever Amelia was available, he'd received a call for help on a case. And when he was free, Amelia was not.
But finally they were able to arrange a date. Kyle was nervous as he got ready to meet her. he hadn't seen her since her brunch, and he wanted to make sure he looked good for her. So, just for the occasion, he got his hair trimmed, just to keep it looking neat. He debated between wearing robes and muggle clothes, but eventually went with a nice robe in a rich chocolate brown.
Finally ready, he headed over to Amelia's house. He paused at the door a moment, making sure his hair wasn't sticking up. Then he rang the doorbell and waited.

It seemed ages since she last saw Kyle but when he owled her with a free day that they could get together, it seemed almost too perfect that she too had that day off. As she completed her errands in getting ready for the day, she constantly prayed that she would not be called into wor suddenly, which was what had happened on most of their other arranged meetings. She had gone to the salon to get her hair done, and recieved an urgent owl. Luckily, it was easily solved and she could just send a reply owl instead of going in. That was the closest to an interuption she had gotten all day.
She had just finished getting dressed, in lavendar colored robes that cinched just under her breasts in an empire waistline, when Kyle rang the doorbell. Her curls bounced off her shoulders and she hurried down the hallway to let him in. "Hello stranger," she said with a smile as she opened the door for him. "I need just another minute, come in and make yourself at home."

Kyle smiled and held out a bouquet of flowers he'd bought on the way to her house. "Hi, there. Do I know you?" he teased. "You look beautiful... these must be for you."
He stepped inside her house and nodded to Didia, who was cleaning nearby. "I'm glad we were finally able to coordinate our schedules. Things have just been crazy lately. I imagine the Ministry is in quite an uproar right now?"

"Oh Kyle, you didn't have to!" She took the flowers from him with one hand and hugged him with the other. "They're so beautiful. Thank you." She shut the door once he had come inside and guided him in toward the sitting room. On their way through the house, Amelia asked Didia to get her a vase with water. The little elf almost beat them to the sitting room, crystal vase in hand. She thanked Didia, who hurried away to leave Amelia and Kyle alone. She was a very intuative elf.
"Yes, its a mess there right now. I'm surprised I got an entire day off, what with everything that's been going on." There had been a murder over at Hogwarts, a number of threats from mysterious villians, and the repeatedly insulting reports coming out of the Daily Prophet. 'Mess' barely covered it. "Has your work been affected lately, or are you just always so popular?" When it wasn't her work calling her away from dates with Kyle, it was his.

Kyle frowned. Even working independently as he did, he had noticed a dramatic spike in dark creature activity. He was extremely busty these days, and it worried him. Something was coming; he could feel it.
"Yeah, it's been unusually busy for me, too," he admitted. "I've been getting a lot of calls from muggles, actually. I put out ads in something called the yellow pages, which is where muggles go to look up places or companies. A lot of them have been calling me from there lately, to get rid of random pests like doxies and boggarts. I'm beginning to think that someone is planting these things in muggle houses, just to scare them."
He stopped in front of the sofa, but didn't sit down. "Do you get the feeling that something big is about to happen? Like it's all building up to something?"

"I did have that feeling. But I had hoped it was just me being paranoid. Apparently not." Amelia arranged the flowers in the crystal vase as she spoke, hoping to keep this all too serious conversation somewhere in the light. "How is it working with muggles? That must be hard explaining their problems so that they don't get too worried. Or do you use a memory charm?" Amelia had used memory modification charms before when it was neccessary, but she didn't like them. She felt they were cheating somehow. It was important to have all of your memeories, even if the were bad or confusing.

Kyle was relieved by the shift in topic. Things were bad enough these days; it seemed necessary to keep things light whenever possible. "Well, the good thing is, most muggles are afraid of insects, so the boggarts usually end up assuming the shape of a really large cockroach or something. I tell them that the house needs to be fumigated, so they have to leave for a little while, then I deal with the boggart. And generally speaking, muggles can't tell the difference between a doxy infestation and a rodent problem. And if they don't notice a difference, I simply don't enlighten them. I only use memory charms when I have no other choice."

She would have loved to see him interact with muggles, he seemed so relaxed about it. But she thought better of asking to join him on his next call. They had a hard enough time getting together for this date. She'd much rather spend their time together having fun, and not working or examining muggle life. "Really? A rodent and a doxy? But the two are so drastically different. I suppose you can will your mind to believe anything if you really want to. Its amazing." She ran a hand through her hair and tucked a few strands behind her ear. She was missing her earrings.

Kyle laughed. "Yeah, well... Muggles will make themselves believe what they want to see. Children usually aren't fooled. Their minds are more open. I usually just tell them that they're fairies, if they ask. But the adults... they can't accept the idea of doxies, so they tell themselves that it's just mice... or maybe moths." He shrugged, silently taking in her appearance. She really did look beautiful. He had been waiting so long for this date that he'd almost forgotten. "I like working with muggles, though. They're so innocent. Well, most of them, anyway. They also usually tip better."

"Do they?" she laughed. "Well, next time I need your services I'll be sure to tip you better than any muggle." She gave him a wink and a smile. Then she gave an apologetic look. "Just let me finish getting ready and then we can go. And you can tell me more about the muggles." She gave another quick flash of a smile and then headed in the direction of her bedroom. In a short time she had found her earrings, put on lipstick, and rechecked her hair. She was back in the sitting room within two minutes, purse and cloak in hand. "Shall we?"

While she was getting ready, Kyle amused himself by taking a casual look around. He didn't want to be too nosy, so he just stood where he was by the sofa and looked around from there. He was not surprised to see that she kept her house very tidy, and that she had a flair for decorating. In addition to the flowers he had brought her, there were numerous potted plants around the house, lots of book shelves, and a number of portraits, several of which seemed to be sizing him up suspiciously. One of them actually scowled at him, and Kyle was sure that he would have started interrogating him to see if he was worthy of Amelia, if she hadn't walked into the room at that exact moment.
"You look beautiful... I said that already, didn't I?" He laughed as he headed for the door. "See you later, Didia!" he called to the tiny house elf.
Once they were outside, he turned to her. "I was thinking we might as well go get a bite to eat first... How does the Hot Panini sound?"

"Yes, you did. But a girl can never hear it enough." Amelia pulled the door shut behind them as they stepped outside, and with a flick of her wand the door locked itself. "That sounds wonderful. I haven't eaten there in ages." She rarely ate out, as that tended to be something she did when she was not working. And she was always working. Tonight was going to be a great change of pace.

"Great," he said. It really was a relief to get out and just forget about work and everything going on in the world. A number of things still preyed upon his mind, especially the child vampire he'd let slip away from him. There had been a couple of sightings of the girl, and several deaths had been attributed to her. These deaths still weighed heavily on his mind, as surely as if he'd killed them himself.
He realized that he had fallen silent, so he quickly covered it with a smile. "Ha... sorry about that... I guess I've been working so hard I've forgotten how to relax. What do you say we apparate there? I'm starving."

"You and me both." She had barely noticed his silence, wrapped up in her own thoughts. "Alright." There were two loud pops then both Kyle and Amelia had vanished from the front lawn.

They apparated just in front of the Hot Panini. Another couple was on its way out of the restaurant and they almost collided with Kyle and Amelia. "Sorry about that!" Kyle said, smiling apologetically. He saw the annoyed expression on the man's face, but chose to ignore it.
Stepping forward, Kyle opened the door for Amelia and waited for her to go inside. "After you," he said.

"I don't think he was too pleased," Amelia said with a small giggle as she looked back at the couple who were leaving. Kyle pulled the door open for her and she stepped inside. "Thank you," she said with a slight nod of her head.
Inside, the hostess showed them to their seats and left two menus on the table. Amelia slung her cloak over the back of her seat as he pulled it out for herself. "I've almost forgotten what the inside of a restaurant looks like," sitting herself down. She looked around at the floating candles that lit the room, the rectangular tables that were placed in a straight rows throughout the room, and the many different people already enjoying their meals.

Kyle chuckled and glanced back at the man's retreating form. "Well, these things can happen, unfortunately. Luckily, no one got hurt."
Following her into the restaurant, he took an opportunity to look around. He liked the decor in the Hot Panini. It was warm and homey, with the floating candles and a crackliing fireplace in one corner. Since winter was just around the corner, the fireplace was a welcome feature of the room.
Once Amelia was seated, he removed his cloak and sat down across from her, then thanked the hostess for the menus. "I know what you mean," Kyle said. "I haven't been out to eat in months, I don't think. I usually get something unhealthy from one of the pubs, just because it's faster. It'll be nice not to have to hurry through dinner for a change."

Amelia chuckled as her gaze returned to Kyle. "I'm so glad I'm not the only one who doesn't have a social life." She picked up a menu and looked it over, but before making her decision she looked back to Kyle. "I'd love to hear more about working with the muggles."

Kyle smiled at her over the top of his menu. "I really like working with muggles," he said. "They have the neatest things. In fact," he said, "I actually have a muggle woman as a secretary. I needed someone to work that contraption... the telephone? I haven't the slightest idea how to use the thing, so she handles that and takes the messages. She knows a little about magic... she has a cousin who's a witch. So she knows just enough that I don't have to hide the truth from her."

It would have been insane for her to be jealous of this muggle woman working for Kyle, that's why when she felt a little jealousy rise up inside her, Amelia quickly quickly laughed it off. "I don't suppose you'd want to look foolish on a...uh, telyfone. I don't even know what that is, but I wouldn't want to look foolish on one." She laughed a little and glanced back at the menu, then back up at him.
