Kyle was also glad for the change of subject. He felt a little helpless in talking about Andi and Ted, because although he considered both to be friends, they weren't close enough friends that he could really help them without looking like he was butting in where he didn't belong. He would just have to hope that somehow they would find a way to work things out. Or trust that if they could not, then it wasn't meant to be.
"Yeah, I've definitely heard some very good things about the movie," Kyle said. "I'm sure it will be good. At the very least, it'll be fun. And it won't be involving work at all. Honestly, just the fact that we're finally able to get out and away from work is worth it to me."

Amelia wholeheartedly agreed. "Honestly, I love my work. Everything else comes second for a reason, but yes. It is so nice to just relax and be a little more unprofessional, you know? Last week I was writing to my cousin and I actually signed the letter Ms Bones.. I've had to sign so many documents lately, I've taken the habit home."
She definitely needed to relax a little more often. She always made time for downtime in her schedule, that was how she met Kyle in the first place. But perhaps it was time she took a real holiday.

(I swore I answered this before.)
Kyle laughed. "I know what you mean," he agreed. "I've done things like that before. When you're just working all the time, you start to forget what it's like to have a life. It's embarrassing... the last good dream I had involved fighting a boggart. I can't even escape them in my sleep!"
Of course, many of his recent dreams had been about a certain child vampire. And they had been horrible nightmares that kept him awake at night. But he wasn't about to tell Amelia about that.

Shamefully, the last good dream Amelia was not of anything involving work, nor anything she cared to share with Kyle as he had been a part of it. That was her pleasant little secret and she'd take it to the grave. "Did you at least beat the boggart in your dream? It'd be quite a bad omen if you hadn't," she teased. Amelia laughed a bit before taking a sip of her drink. She had no idea that Kyle's thoughts had turned to a darker subject, she just kept on laughing and making jokes.

Kyle was pulled from his thoughts by her joke. He laughed as well, but it suddenly felt a little forced. "Yes, luckily, I did," he replied. "That's why it was a good dream. I do occasionally have some bad ones, though... and they're not about boggarts. It's just that everything is so dark these days... Sometimes I get a little stressed out. That's why I'm glad we were finally able to take this time out to enjoy ourselves. Just to forget about the world."

"I think I could help with that a little more often, if you'd like." She smiled boldly at him, not afraid to let him know she enjoyed his company. She was not one of those women who played coy, it was unnatural on her. She would have looked fake.
It wasn't long before the server had returned and their dinners were on the table in front of them. Amelia tried not to let the conversation lag too much, but she was hungry and the appearance of food put talking on the back burner. She wasn't completely silent though.

"I'll keep that in mind," Kyle said with a laugh, just before their food arrived.
They just chatted pleasantly while they ate, talking about little things and enjoying each others' company. He liked the sparkle in her eyes as she talked, and the playful way she spoke her mind. She was somehow outspoken and shy at the same time, an interesting combination. When she really cared about something, it showed in her eyes.
By the time they were just about finished eating, the conversation had turned back to talk of the Ministry. "I know it's still pretty early in his term, but how do you think Vincent is handling his new position as Minister of Magic?"

The food was delicious. Amelia was no longer hungry, nor was she stuffed. It was the perfect portion, which meant she wouldn't be feeling extra heavy while running around in the movie theatre later. She took another sip of her drink before answering Kyle's question.
"Well, it's always hard to judge when something so terrible has happened early on. But I can definitely say he's doing a right better job than that crooked Craven." Amelia had opinions about everything that concerned the Ministry. But she liked to try to be fair, and when chaos ensues just after a new official is elected most people tend to place blame.

Kyle nodded. "Yeah, Craven was a real piece of work. I had a few run-ins with him back when I was still working in the Ministry. It always seemed like he was exerting pressure on me to kill creatures that weren't causing any problems, but he wanted me to ignore a whole nest of vampires that was living in Knockturn Alley. I never liked the guy. Vincent always struck me as a decent guy, at least. And I'll never understand why people are always so quick to blame the people in charge whenever something bad happens. You put the blame on the people who did it, not the ones who are trying to stop it."

"He didn't!" she gasped. Amelia, along with most everyone else working at the Ministry not under Craven's thumb, knew that the prior Minister had pressured people to do many things. And had done many questionable things himself. But to order the death of innocent citizens! That made Amelia very angry, and for the first time since hearing of Craven's demise she was happy the old git was dead. "That's terrible. You didn't do it, did you? You didn't kill innocent creatures?"

Kyle shook his head. "Of course not. Why do you think I left the Ministry? I routinely went against orders, releasing the innocent creatures... I even helped a couple of them get into the zoo in Hogsmeade for their protection. I never agreed with the policies of the department, and I wound up being 'asked' to resign."
He let out a sad sigh. "I actually wanted to keep working there as long as I could, because I felt like I could do more good there. But it really was only a matter of time before I was caught."

"Have you thought of coming back? It's not like that anymore. Well, I know the Law Enforcement Office isn't. I can't be positive and the Magical Animals Department, but there's a whole different feeling at the Ministry these days." She knew Kyle had his own business now, but surely the Ministry could ease some of the hardships that fell upon a business owner. The server brought their bill over in a small black envelope and set it on the table. Amelia reached for her purse.

Kyle thought about that for a moment. Part of him would dearly love to go back to the Ministry, to continue his attempts to fix something that was hopelessly broken. But he had a feeling that the time had passed, and it was now too late for him to go back. He was used to being on his own, and making his own rules.
"I imagine things probably are different now, with Vincent in charge. I've always liked him... he always struck me as being a very sincere sort. But unless there's been a huge shakeup in the Magical Creatures department, I'm not sure I'll feel comfortable there now. The head of the department was the one who asked me to leave... it was rather uncomfortable. I just hate to see people or even animals being treated unfairly, and I wish I could do more to help."

Amelia listened intently knowing that corruption was about even in her department. It seemed to just not be as blatant as Kyle's experience with the Magical Creatures Department. That was one of the reasons Amelia worked so hard. She felt she needed to work her way up to the top where she could make a real impact in the department. To really help people.
"Well its probably best this way, anyway. I mean, if you worked at the Ministry you wouldn't have this wonderfully flexible schedule." Amelia smiled teasingly and checked the bill, then placed the appropriate amount in the black envelope and slid it to the side of the table.

Kyle let out a laugh. "You have a good point there," he said. "Although, if I did work at the Ministry, there's a chance we'd occasionally run into each other in the elevator or something."
He noticed that she was taking out her money and paying for the bill, and he felt obligated to protest. He was, after all, an old-fashioned sort of guy, and he'd been taught that the man was supposed to pay. However, he couldn't help but admire Amelia's liberated, independent attitude.
"Oh... you don't have to do that," he said, putting his hand on hers.

"That's funny that you think I have time to wait for the lifts," she teased. That was the only thing she wouldn't change about her day at the office. It was always nice just standing in the lifts and not have to do everything. It was her peaceful, alone time.
She liked the feel of his hand on hers, but she wasn't needing him to pay for dinner. "You'll get the next one," she said with a grin. "And it won't take so long for the next one either."

Kyle hesitated. He really wasn't used to letting the woman pay. But he didn't want to seem like the type who was threatened by strong women and insisted on being "macho." Finally, he nodded, exhaling slowly. "OK. I'll tell you what," he said. "You can pay for dinner, but I'll pay for the movies, OK? Does that sound fair enough? And I'm holding you to that last part.... we won't wait so long for the next date."

Amelia was perfectly happy with that arrangement. And she was more than happy that he didn't want to wait for their next date. But they had this date to focus on now. "Alright. It's a deal." She shoved the bill to the end of the table and then looked back at Kyle. "Ready?" She had left enough money to cover the tip so there was no reason to wait around. She really did want to see what this interactive movie was all about.

Kyle took one last sip from his drink, then dabbed at his mouth with his napkin before standing up. "Yeah, I'm ready."
Picking up the brochure from the movie theatre, he checked it quickly. "Looks like we'll be just in time for the 8:00 show," he said. "This should be fun."
He led the way to the door, opening it for her. "After you."

"Perfect." Amelia was looking forward to experiencing this movie with Kyle. She was also just looking forward to finding out how it worked. Even when you grew up in the wizarding world, there were things that were unimaginable.
Amelia followed Kyle to the door and slipped past him when he held it open for her. The night was cool and clear, much like the night they had first met. It was beautiful outside with stars twinkling in the black sky.
