Jackie had cried that day when she left Dean. She had given herself the rest of the day to cry and wonder what was going on, but after that, she was done.
For the following days, she treated Dean just like always, as if nothing at all had changed, even though it had. She wasn't willing to lose him as a friend because she was jealous.
On a Hogsmeade weekend, Jackie had told Dean she'd be late. She had a paper that she absolutely had to finish, so she followed the rest of the students a couple of hours later, and told Dean to meet her at the observatory.
She was there before him, and occupied herself by staring at the sky. It was charmed so that even during the day, you could see the stars as if it were nighttime. It was beautiful.

The day after he left Jackie and went back to his room, Dean did serious thinking. He had to tell her before he was going to go crazy. She had to know that it was she that he asked advice for. He wanted to know what she would respond to.
He noticed that it seemed like things went back to normal after that, and he used every bit of that time to try and hint at her that he liked her. Plus, he used that time to build his courage. It was slowly building and he hoped that maybe today it would just slip out. That would be much better than him just thinking about it and then not saying it.
Dean recieved the note that she was going to be late so he just kind of went off on his own in Hogsmeade, until it was time to meet up with Jackie. He practically ran to the observatory and then he stopped just before he went in to straighten out his hair and clothes. Taking a deep breath, he entered the observatory. It didn't take but a few seconds until his eyes landed on Jackie. A smile spread across his face and he walked up next to her while his hands were in his pocket. "Hey Jackie," Dean said stopping next to her.

Jackie's head came back down and she turned, smiling at Dean. It was unfair, how utterly perfect he was, and how no other girl could every truly appreciate that in him.
"Hey, Dean-o," she said, smiling and wrapping her arms around Dean. "Did you miss me?"
(Oh, shameful how short that is...)

"Only every second," he said smiling and hugging her. Dean did miss spending time with her. Sure, he did have a few other friends, but when it came down to it, he would rather spend all his time with Jackie if he could. "I believe I cried because of my loneliness. And then I had to eat alone this morning, but I did enjoy some awesome pancakes. You missed out. Then of course I just looked in shop windows alone thinking how time should have sped up a little bit."

"Yes, well, if you were willing to just do my papers for me..." she trailed off, teasing him. "It would have been a win win situation."
It also wasn't fair that he said things like "only every second." But she was best friends with Dean, and she could claim that at least.
In a completely honest tone, she said, "I missed you, too."

Dean laughed. "Sorry," he said with a wink. "I happened to be extremely hungry. I think I ate enough pancakes for the both of us, and in a little bit I'm going to be hungry again." He grinned and put a hand to his heart. "I'm missed! I feel special!" Dean playfully nudged her. After all, he was flirting with her a little bit. He left on arm around her. "I'm glad that you were able to finish those papers. I was going to be bored and might not have even made it to Hogsmeade."

"Well, I'll be hungry in a little bit," Jackie said. "I haven't eaten yet today. That paper took forever."
She put an arm around his midsection, just to make it easier for them to stand together. Her other hand was shoved deep in the pocket of her cloak, as she was freezing lately. Winter was always hard on her, and she never failed to get a cold at Christmas.
"You smell good today, Dean-o."

"Why thank you Ms. Frazier," he said. "Its called a nice shower and cologne. My mum found some in a muggle store and thought she'd send it to me." Dean gave a little shrug and smiled. He tilted his head down slightly and caught the scent of her hair. "You're hair smells nice, as usual," he commented.
Jackie was warming him and he pulled her closer to finish getting warm. "You know, you're perfect for keeping me warm. You're not too tall, not to short, just perfect." His smile turned into a goofy grin.

"Like Goldilocks?" Jackie asked, smelling him again. She liked the cologne a lot. It made him smell... well, like heaven. But of course, she kept that thought to herself.
Her question about Goldilocks was in reference to him telling her she was just perfect... again, with words like that.
"Well, you're just tall enough and big enough that you're perfect for keeping me warm too. I hate the winter, Dean. It's always too cold."

"Yes, like Goldilocks. You're my Goldilocks," he said. Of course, that was another hint for her, but Dean doubted she would catch on. Why couldn't she see that it was her that he was talking about?
Dean smiled. "Well, you should love winter. After all, I can block most of the wind off of you, and keep you warm. In the summer, I would just keep you hot, not that you aren't already." He gave her a wink. "So, winter should be your favorite time of year."

Jackie smiled brightly, happy about the compliments, but underneath the smiles she gave him, she was getting frustrated. She didn't want his compliments when there was another girl that wasn't his Goldilocks, but his sleeping beauty or his princess.
"Well, yes, but when you're not around, I freeze, Dean."

"Well, it looks like I should be around more often then," he said. "I could always give you my favorite blanket so you can keep warm when I'm not there cause you're up in the Gryffindor girls' dorm. Other than that, I can always keep you warm. All you have to do is be around, and I'll be more than happy to keep you warm. I wouldn't want you to freeze to death. After all, who would be here to say what I don't finish? I would be completely lost."

Jackie didn't let him see his frown.
"I don't think your mystery girl would like it if I was around so much, Dean-o," she said, reminding him that there was another girl in his life that he was supposed to keep warm. "How's that going, by the way? Have you been flirting with her more?"

"I don't think she would mind that much. I mean after all, you are my best friend. I can't ever lose you," he said. He should just break out and tell her right now, but he was afraid to say anything, and besides, it wouldn't get out of his throat.
"I guess it's going alright. She bailed on me the other day when I tried to flirt with her more. I don't know what was wrong. I kept asking her and she said that she was fine." Dean gave a little shrug. "But we're cool now I guess."

"Girls don't usually like to talk about what's wrong," She said, not making the connection at all, but still undeniably frustrated. "And it could have been anything. We're very emotional creatures."
She kept her arms around him and shrugged. "Did she say anything that might make you think she was responding well otherwise?"

"I don't know," said Dean. "She seemed slightly annoyed about something. I didn't get it, and I still don't. Sometimes I wonder if she is even picking up that I'm flirting with her because I honestly like her more than she probably thinks I do."
He gently tightened his arm around her. "I don't think she has really said anything that would directly imply that she likes me back."

Jackie frowned slightly. "I wish I knew who she was. I might be able to help you read her more. And scope out my competition," she added playfully, wondering what his reaction to this would be.
"But since you won't tell me... Maybe she was just having an off day. I don't know. I can't imagine her not liking you back, though."

"I do believe you know her," Dean said. A smile crossed his face at the last part of Jackie's comment, however his face did turn slightly red, but he wasn't really aware of that. Only if she knew that she was her own competition.
"Maybe, I don't know. Things seem like they're back to normal. I hope that it is, except for the fact I wish that she would pick up on the hints I'm dropping. It's like she's oblivous to it, but I'm too nervous to just say it out directly."

"That's interesting, girls are usually really good at knowing when a guy is flirting with them. I mean, we get all self conscious and unsure of ourselves, but we usually know. Maybe she's just really very shy."
She wanted to help, and she wished she was helping him, even if it made her frown.

"Oh trust me. This girl is not shy. I've never known her to be shy." Never once had Dean known Jackie to be shy. She was always outgoing, which caused him to loosen up. "She likes to do all sorts of different things. Honestly, she can think up some pretty crazy things. She had talked me into doing something crazy, but yet it was a lot of fun." A smile spread across his face as he thought about them jumping off the Astronomy Tower together. That was probably the most dangerous thing he had ever done.
