Gwen didn't answer for a moment as she folded the letter and put it back in her pocket. It seemed Sin was finally getting the right idea.
"I don't know," she lied. She didn't know if Sin was a pureblood or not, and Merlin knew that her father would blow a gasket if one more of them brought up a date at the table tonight. Besides, Sin was just a game, wasn't he? She didn't want to deal with it.
"It's not signed."

Justin chuckled under his breath, quiet enough that only Gwen would hear it. "A secret admirer? I guess it's a good thing you said yes to letting me take you to the dance. That way we don't have to worry about you having some stalker pining for you at the dance and maybe I can find out who needs to die while I'm there." He was teasing of course, he wouldn't get in the way if Gwen actually liked the guy, whoever he was... but again he would protect her too. The fact that Gwen was smiling and almost blushing he had a feeling it would be the former of the two and he didn't believe that she hadn't a clue who it was from by her expression. But he let the subject drop for now.

Gwen turned a softer smile on her brother. "Yes, it was a good thing. Who knows what kind of trouble I could get into with some charming stranger if you weren't around."
She realized that sounded a lot less innocent than she had actually meant it. Around Justin and her parents, and her younger brothers to a degree, she tried not to have the same personality that she did in school. It wasn't one they would want to see, afterall. Not from a proper pureblood girl.

Alicia returned to the table, helping Tibby lay out the desserts before she took her own seat after thanking Tibby. Once again, Alicia made sure that there was extra in the kitchen so that Tibby could eat as well.
She smiled as she sat down and gave a curious look to Gwen upon seeing the expression on her face, however she didn't question it. Alicia made a mental note to catch up with her daughter before she left for school again, as well as her boys.

"Return to dinner, please," Thatcher said quietly, mortified at his children. Hadn't he and Alicia raised them better? to be attentive and proper and polite at dinner. Not to read letters, not to bring up girlfriends that weren't pureblood... he was going to have a talk with all of them except Xavier and Justin. Thank merlin for those two, or he would have thought there was something wrong with him or Alicia that they couldn't birth a decent child.

She looked to Thatcher with a soft look. Alicia could understand becoming excited over a letter recieved. She was the same when it came to Thatcher sending her letters if they weren't together at the time. Alicia wanted her children to become their own. Sure, she would give them guidance while they were young, but they should become their own instead of being forced into something they might not want to do.
Alicia looked away from him and to her dessert. She knew from the look on his face that he was going to call a meeting after dinner.

Zachary watched all of this silently as he ate. He barely knew the children, it seemed. Justin and Gwen he knew best and he was pleased to see how close the two of them were. Timothy and Thane had been fairly young when he last saw them, but they hadn't changed drastically. Xavier he knew the least. He had grown up quite a lot since Zach had last seen him. But personality-wise, he was just the same. He'd been a quiet, serious little child, and now was growing into a quiet, serious teenager.
After the business with the letter, Zachary couldn't help but notice the look in Thatcher's eyes. He'd seen it many times when he was younger, after the deaths of their parents left Thatcher in charge of the family. The kids were going to get a lecture after dinner. He felt sorry for them all. Thatcher's lectures were pure torture. He'd heard more than his fair share. They were one of the many reasons he traveled so often.
Finishing his meal, he set down his fork and smiled over at Alicia. "Dinner was delicious, Alicia," he complimented her. Looking back at his brother and hoping to diffuse some of his annoyance at the children, he asked, "So, Thatch, what have I missed since I've been gone?"

Thatcher knew Zach's tactic... trying to calm him down. He was calm, but he never forgot an infraction, though he was beginning to think that he let his children get away with too many of them. Well, no more. Starting tonight, his kids were going to shape up. He was going to tell Gwen who she was engaged to, and she was going to start acting like a proper lady. He glanced at his wife... even Alicia didn't know of the arrangement yet.
Thane... what could he say about Thane? He hated to admit it, but Thane was being all right, even choosing a girl. He just needed to be reminded of manners every so often, but the boy forgot everything.
And Timothy... he needed as stern, if not more, talking to than Gwen needed. What was he thinking, asking to bring home a girl that was anything less than a high society pureblood?
He turned his fork upside down on his plate, signaling that he was finished, and looked at his brother, going on about business and family matters, the important things, which meant the terribly dull things as well.

Tanya soon lost interest in the conversation at the table and began her silent torture of Alec anew. She leaned over to whisper something into his ear that was very much a promising threat for after dinner when her family was otherwise occupied and they could sneak off for a few moments without being noticed. As she turned back to the table she realized no one had noticed all in their own little issues as Zachary spoke to Thatcher to change the subject. Her mind was not on the conversation at that moment though, but rather on Alec and his new found pain.

Alec nearly bit down on his tongue to keep from groaning as Tanya worked her torturous magic with her hands under the table. The woman may have been playing the caring aunt and supportive sister, but he knew better than most what a wildcat she really was. The promise of sneaking off after dinner was nearly enough to drive him over the edge.
It was a lucky thing that he was good at keeping his thoughts in check, or he might have blurted out something highly inappropriate. The only sign he gave that anything was going on was the ravenous way he devoured his dinner... as if it was his last meal.

Xavier saw the look in his father's eyes and knew that his siblings were in for a very serious talking-to. He almost felt bad for them... well, he felt bad for Gwen. He didn't feel bad for Thane or Timmy, since he was fairly certain that neither of them would have had any sympathy for him were the situations reversed. But Xavier never did anything wrong--at least, not so his parents noticed, anyway. He was a true Slytherin, in that he knew how to be sneaky and to cover up any actions that were not exactly exemplary. Even his tendency to talk back to his professors hadn't quite got back to his parents as of yet.

Gwen put her fork on her plate as well, and watched with a slight frown as everyone else finished up. She hadn't seen that look in her father's eyes yet, but mostly because she had avoided looking at them. It wasn't really fair; she was going to wait on the letter, was going to open it after dinner, but Thane had made a big deal out of it, and she was excited. What was she supposed to do?
She glanced up, and it seemed every else at the table knew it was coming, too. Thane, at least, was giving her an apologetic look.

It was actually a refreshing change for Zachary for there to be tension at Thatcher's table that did not involve him. Still, having been on the receiving end of a great deal of Thatcher's lectures, he had great sympathy for the children. He was almost tempted to stall for time for a while, and if he'd had enough money to bring back gifts from his travels for the children, now would have been a good time to present them.
However, he had nothing, and besides, sometimes it was best to just get these things over with quickly. Removing his napkin from his lap, he dabbed delicately at his mouth. "Well, I thank you for dinner, Alicia. You've outdone yourself again."

Thane nodded, agreeing with his Uncle Zach. "Dinner was fantastic, Mum."
The little house elf came out and started to levitate plates towards the kitchens. Thane watched, and glanced at his father again.
"I'm going to help her," he said, slipping out of his chair and disappearing into the kitchen.

Tanya smirked, abandoning her slow torture of Alec and bringing both of her hands above the table, complimenting Alicia like everyone else. As sickeningly motherly and kind as the woman could be, Tanya liked he for her oldest brother. And she had a cruel streak in there somewhere... she was a Death Eater, afterall.
Pleased that Alec was hot and bothered enough to follow her home tonight, she decided to give him some grace and make their exit. Zachary was staying... it didn't mean she had to.
"Well, my dear brother, I think it's time for me to turn in for the evening, or at least head home to do so. Alicia, children, Justin," she gave him a knowing look. "It was wonderful seeing you all again."

Alicia smiled gracefully. "Thank you, " she said to Zachary. It was always nice to hear that she did fairly well as she had feared that sometimes she didn't do so well. She watched Thane slip from the table to help Tibby, and then looked back to Tanya. "Thank you Tanya and Alec for coming. You know that we appreciate you stopping by from time to time." Alicia gave her a smile as well.
Turning back to Thatcher, she knew what was still on his mind, however she wasn't sure what he was going to say at the family meeting. "I'll help Tibby and Thane make sure everything is put away. We'll be back in a moment." She gently touched Thatcher's arm and picked up several dessert plates and headed toward the kitchen.

Alec was all too quick to get to his feet when Tanya announced that she would be going. "It's been a real pleasure, Mrs. Scotts," he said enthusiastically, nodding to her retreating figure. "And Mr. Scotts... Thatcher. I'd heard so much about you, and not just from Tanya. I really enjoyed myself tonight. It's been... stimulating."

Thatcher stood with his wife and Tanya and Alec, which should have been a cue to the rest of his children to stand as well.
"It was a pleasure to meet you, Alec, and Tanya, always a pleasure seeing you," he said, waving them off, leaving him in the room with Zach and all of his children except for Thane.
"Justin, Zach, why don't you take Xavier and fill him in on what adventures you've been having while you've been away." He was trying to get Gwen and Timothy alone. He had considered making Thane sit in on this, but he had actually been very well behaved tonight, and the boy deserved a break for it. "I'll send Thane out to join you when he's back."

Xavier shot a sympathetic look at Gwen, but then paused to make a face at Timmy. He couldn't help but think Timmy was getting qhat he deserved, but he felt bad for Gwen. Still, he was the good one, so he didn't mind that he would be sitting out the family lecture. He nodded at his father and quietly followed Justin and Zach into the living room.

Outside of the mansion, and unconcerned for the children's punishments, Tanya turned to Alec. "You were a very good boy."
It had been almost more than Tanya could stomach, and she was vaguely impressed that Alec never once showed irritation or boredom. Though, to be fair, she had kept him preoccupied.
"Ready for dessert?"
