Gwen smiled softly, a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "Fighting with Dad?" She asked, and nodded. "You're welcome to stay. We just have to get Thane to take Tim away."
She knew her mother had no good news to tell her, or she would have shared it first thing. If it came down to it...
She sighed. Well, she would figure out what to do. She had time. Surely, her father would let her finish school first.

"Unfortunately," she said. "And thanks Gwen. I just want to let you know that I tried. I really did." Alicia sighed. "Aw, we can have Tim have a girls night too. We could do his hair all nice and pretty, maybe toss on a little makeup." She smiled as she was teasing.
Alicia knew that Gwen would find some way out of her engagement, but she only hoped that things would go smoothly.

Gwen waved off the apology. "It's okay. It's every daughter's duty to marry someone rich and unpleasant, right?"
She sighed inwardly, trying her hardest to pretend like she was all right with it.
She had known Adrien since she was little, and she detested him. Honestly, her father couldn't have picked anyone worse. What was even worse was that she was pretty certain Adrien detested her as well. Where was the fairness in that?

Alicia took a seat beside Gwen. "Well, maybe things won't work out. You've still got time before you get married." She gave her a knowing glance before winking. "And that is not always the case for a daughter to marry someone rich and unpleasant. Believe it or not, your father is not as unpleasant as he can act sometimes. It was an arranged marriage, six months after we met. He was quite the gentleman. Maybe things won't be as terrible as you think they will be. You never know how things will work out."
She glanced around Gwen's room and looked back to her. "What do you propose we do tonight?"

Gwen was quiet until Tim finally left them, presumably to catch up with the other boys.
When the door was closed, she sighed and looked at her mother. "I don't know if I'm really up to doing anything tonight, Mum. I wanted to talk to Justin and Uncle Zach, but I guess that will have to wait until tomorrow. Tim's pretty upset, you know."
To mention nothing of her, but she was quiet.

"I know he is," said Alicia. "We'll just have to see about this girl. Maybe things won't be that bad. We'll see how they work out, alright? Right now, your father just needs to cool off." She let out a sigh.
"I can't say that I know what you're going through, but things will work out Gwen. I want to see my children happy." She gave her another gentle smile. "Thank you for letting me stay up here by the way." Alicia grew quite. "Do you want me to brush your hair?"

Thatcher was sitting behind a desk, a glass of firewhiskey in hand. "Don't I though?" He deadpanned, his eyes on Zach as he came in. Alicia, Gwen, and Tim weren't speaking with him... but if it changed the way those two acted, had he really done anything wrong? It was normal for a girl to be arranged in a marriage, normal for a father to want his son to only date the best. They had no right being angry with him. He shook his head. "Come in, have a seat. What happened tonight has been a long time coming... I'm just sorry you had to see it your first night back in town... from... California, was it?" Zachary shook his head and sat down across from the desk. "No, I left California more than a month ago," he said off-handedly. "I was in... I think it was New Orleans. I don't know. I got bored with the States. All the places started to run together after a while." He nodded towards the bottle of firewhiskey. "You planning to share?"

"Help yourself," Thatcher said, sighing and pushing the bottle as well as an empty glass towards Zach. "I don't expect it to really last the night, and I'd feel better if someone else was helping me finish it."
Half the household was angry at him, and he didn't care. He wanted to get it off of his mind.
"Why are you back, Zach?"

Zach didn't answer the question right away. He took the bottle and glass and poured himself a healthy serving. He took a swig from the glass, allowing the alcohol to burn its way down his throat before he finally turned his eyes back to meet his brother's.
"Because it was time," he said simply. "I may wander... but you know I always come back. For a little while, anyway."

Gwen kind of just wanted to curl up and cry, maybe in a hot bath, but she tried never to cry in front of anyone, and that included her mother. She was the girl that smiled and made everyone else feel better, even when she was miserable inside.
"Yeah, that would be nice, Mum," Gwen said, moving to get her hairbrush and taking her hair down from the clip it was in, before she sat on her bed again, faing away from her mother.

He did always return, Thatcher thought to himself, but he always left again too. He was still too young, at least mentally, and Thatcher just wished he would settle down and take responsibility for his life.
He raised an eyebrow. "How long are you in town for this time, Zach?"

She took the brush from Gwen and started to brush her hair gently. Alicia was quiet for a few moments. "I've heard about some kind of dance coming up," she mentioned. "Are you planning on going? If you want, we could go out shopping. I haven't done that in ages." Alicia wanted to find some way that could cheer Gwen up in some small way.

Gwen inwardly rolled her eyes. She knew what her mother was doing, and she appreciated it, but it wasn't going to work.
"Justin was going to take me... and I'll go as long as that's possible. But if Dad tries to make me go with Adrien, I won't do it."
She turned and looked over her shoulder at Alicia. "Where did you hear about the dance, Mum?"

He was still too young, at least mentally, and Thatcher just wished he would settle down and take responsibility for his life. He raised an eyebrow. "How long are you in town for this time, Zach?" Zach shrugged and took a sip of his drink. "I don't know," he said honestly. "I really don't have any plans. I just... I thought it was time to come home. Believe it or not, Thatch, I actually missed you. And Tanya, and the kids... I was away far too long this time. I almost didn't even come back." If things had gone differently in California, he wouldn't have come back. He would have stayed with Susie, got married... But no. He couldn't allow himself to think about that possibility. That future was lost to him now. And he was home. He drained the contents of his glass.

Thather refilled his brother's glass, quiet for a moment while he sipped on his own. While he agreed with Tanya that Zach needed to settle down, get married, have kids... a small part of him that he would never verbally admit to was jealous of him.
"We missed you too. The kids love when you come home... though I worry that Gwen gets too many ideas. She's a lot like you, you know. I've really only just noticed it in the last year or so. So you almost didn't come back... what kept you there?"

Zachary didn't answer for a minute. He swirled the drink around in his glass thoughtfully, while his mind traveled back to California. To Susie.
What time was it in California right now? He mentally calculated the time... it was probably about noon at that moment. She'd be sitting down to lunch, probably a lavish meal with plenty of wine and desserts...
Merlin, how he missed her.
"I liked the weather," he answered, his voice distant.
