Tim was still angry, as he father said things were going to change. Oh he hated his father right now, and to hell with his patience as far as Tim was concerned. Feeling a light touch on his arm and Gwen's voice, he calmed down a bit and looked over at his sister as he sat down quietly. Startled by the anger in his mother's voice, he blindly heard Gwen's voice as he nodded at her and followed her up the stairs to her room.
"Gwen....what's gonna happen...i'm scared." Tim was afraid of what would happen now that the secret of his mudblood girlfriend was out, and thinking of the way his father was it scared him.

"Nothing's going to happen, Tim," Gwen said, though her voice was soft and she didn't quite believe it herself. Her head was spinning with the news that she was already betrothed.
"You kno Dad. He gets in these moods where he demands perfection from us and compares us to the Burkes for a while and then he forgets about it. Don't worry. Just try not to mention your girlfriend too much, all right?"

Alicia waited as Gwen and Timothy left the room. If smoke would, it would be coming out from her ears. She watched as they closed the dining room door behind them and then she turned to Thatcher. Alicia didn't care if he could intimidate their children, he didn't intimidate her.
Crossing her arms, she looked at him. "What was that," she said with anger still in her voice. "When did you just so happen to decide on your own that Gwen was already engaged?"

Thatcher was angry and disappointed in his children, and he was not going to apologize to Alicia for it.
"You've seen the way they've been acting. If I could find a girl, I would have Timothy engaged as well. The Wolfes have been talking to me about Gwen for a while now... and it's a union that can't really be turned down. She needs someone to set her straight, and he would be the one to do it. I'm not apologizing for it, Alicia, and you know better than to question me about it."

She knew that she wasn't going to get an apology from Thatcher, and she wasn't expecting one.
"I should know better than to question you," Alicia questioned angrily. "No. You should know better than to make that kind of decision without me Thatcher. We're supposed to be in this together and big decisions like that are supposed to be made together." She wanted to yell at him, but she kept it a tone lower. "They're children Thatcher. They are going to make mistakes, they are supposed to and they learn from them. That is what happens. As for setting her straight, opening a letter at dinner is hardly horrible. Yes, it caused a slight distraction, but it was the first time it happened."
Alicia sighed. "They're not going to be miniature us, and you know that. They are going to be their own person if we like it or not. I frankly don't want them to hate us Thatcher! That doesn't mean that I'll just let them get by with anything either."

"Okay, fine," Thatcher said, his voice booming. "I'll discuss these things with you in the future, but it won't make my decisions any different. Gwen has had 17 years to get over this rebelious stage of hers, to make her misakes and learn from them, and she is not doing it. Neither is Tim, and Merlin only believes it, but Thane seems to be the only one headed in the right direction of those three. It's not just the letter. It's her attitude, her blatant disregard for anything we tell her, the way she is with boys, the muggle clothes... should I go on?"

"Of course not because you are so stubborn," she said. "I don't think that there will be another arranged marriage. I think that Tim will get his act together, as you would say. Thane is doing fine, and Xavier well he's too young at the moment." Alicia attempted to keep herself calm, but she had failed.
"She doesn't disregard everything we tell her. I'm actually kind of glad that Gwen has a rebelious streak in her, because she is able to fight for what she wants and not have everything handed to her. I'm not just going to hand them what they need or want, they will have to work for it. I don't fully approve of all of Gwen's actions all the time, but still Thatcher. And there's nothing wrong with muggle dresses. If she wants to wear one then that is fine by me. I used to wear them whenever we would go out and I don't remember you ever complaining about it. What's so different now?"

"Times are different!" Thatcher yelled at his wife, but forced himself to calm down before this just turned into a screaming match. "No one would have mistaken you as a bloodtraitor. Wearing those kinds of clothes now, on her, could get her killed. You know this! You work with the people that would hurt her for it."
It wasn't just that. He wanted control over his children, and, with the exception of Xavier, he had none. This would never win an arguement with his wife, however, so he kept his mouth shut, except to find an arguement she would go along with.
"Not being a proper young lady in these times is dangerous, Alicia."

When he yelled, Alicia clenched her fists in order to attempt to keep her anger from boiling over. "Don't yell at me," she stated coldly. "Gwen knows how things are, and I will attempt to help her calm down, but I will tell you if she hates you completely, it's your own fault, that goes for the others as well."
Alicia did know the dangers of not showing that you were a true pure-blood and she was going to help prevent anything from happening to Gwen, but she wasn't just going to force everything on her at one time.
Still angry, she didn't want to argue any longer. "You can't control them Thatcher, no matter how hard you try," Alicia said. She walked toward the door. "Consider this argument to be over." With that, she opened the door then slammed it behind her. She didn't bother to look at whoever was around, she just headed straight for the stairs. Tonight, she would be spending with the children and Thatcher could be alone.

Thatcher growled, but knew better than to go after his wife and continue arguing. He was still angry too, but how did you argue with a woman?
He stayed in the dining room, not wanting to follow his wife or deal with his kids right now. But there was still the issue of zachary.
He sighed, and waited nearly half an hour before going into the family room.

Xavier was young, but he knew it meant something bad when his father returned to the family room without his mother, not to mention Gwen and Timmy. He frowned deeply and stared down at his shoes, wondering silently what had happened. A part of him, the bitter part, was sort of glad that Timmy had been yelled at. But he did feel badly for Gwen.
And his mum wasn't there... what did that mean? Biting down on his lower lip, he cast his eyes up at Justin as if hoping for an answer.

Thatcher sighed, looking at Thane and Xavier. He wanted to tell them to go to bed, but decided against it. "Zachary, when you're done with the children, can I have you for a moment? Take your time. I'll be in the study."
I'll be near something strong to drink is what he meant. He smiled softly at Xavier and Justin, and then retreated.

Justin raised his eyebrows at his father's tone. He had a feeling he knew what had happened, and he was itchng to talk to Gwen about it. "Come on, Xav," he said to his youngest brother. "Why don't we head upstairs and let Dad and Uncle Zach get caught up?"
He stood up and signaled for Xavier to follow him. "Talk to you later, Uncle Zach," he said. Then the two of them headed out of the room and up the stairs, leaving Zachary alone in the room.

Zach barely had time to react before Justin and Xavier retreated from the room and left him alone. He sighed softly. Well, he had come to visit, and he knew talking with his brother was part of that. There was no point in delaying the inevitable now.
Stuffing his hands in his pockets, he strode out of the room and headed toward the study, which had once been their father's study. Somehow it seemed right that Thatcher would now be the one who spent much of his time there.
"Well, Thatch, you throw a hell of a dinner party," Zachary remarked, entering the study and leaning against the door frame.

('s all right, Justin, I forgive you for forgetting me)
Thane watched everyone's somber expressions and the tones used, and really, for the life of him, he couldn't even remember what had happened at dinner to make everyone so upset. But it did worry him that he didn't see Gwen or Tim. Their mother, he suspected, would be consoling whichever one of them had gotten in the most trouble.
He stood and followed he two brothers out of the room, just hoping no one was angry enough that it wouldn't be forgotten about by tomorrow.

Gwen was sitting on her bed, her legs crossed in front of her while she tried to assure Tim that nothing was going to happen and that their father's mood would blow over in a couple of days. She was acting like nothing at all had happened... and so what if she was doing it for Tim's sake?
She heard someone coming up the stairs, and it was soft enough that she assumed it was her mother. Some time later, three more sets of feet followed... her brothers, she guessed, but she wasn't entirely willing to leave her room to find out.

Thatcher was sitting behind a desk, a glass of firewhiskey in hand.
"Don't I though?" He deadpanned, his eyes on Zach as he came in. Alicia, Gwen, and Tim weren't speaking with him... but if it changed the way those two acted, had he really done anything wrong? It was normal for a girl to be arranged in a marriage, normal for a father to want his son to only date the best. They had no right being angry with him.
He shook his head. "Come in, have a seat. What happened tonight has been a long time coming... I'm just sorry you had to see it your first night back in town... from... California, was it?"

Even though she was still a little angry, Alicia's footsteps where still light. As she reached the steps, her mood started to change as she had time to relax just a little. She stopped at Gwen's door and knocked gently. "Gwen? Can I please come in," she asked.
Before Gwen could open the door, the rest of the children had made it up the stairs. She gave them a half gentle smile.

Gwen sighed, getting up from her bed where she was sitting still, barely moving as she tried to focus on Tim rather than her own anger at what was going on.
She opened the door and gave her mother a weak smile, stepping aside to let her in, her eyes catching those of her three brothers outside as she did so.

Alicia stepped into Gwen's room after she opened the door. She wished that she could have excellent news to tell Gwen that her engagment was off, but naturally she didn't. Thatcher was too stubborn.
"Hey Gwen," she said softly. "Do you mind if I stay with you tonight? We could have a girls night together if you wanted."
