Edmund ordered a martini for himself, and a butterbeer for Angelique. As he did, he gave another wink to the barmaid, who blushed and mumbled something before hurrying off to get the drinks. While she was gone, Edmund turned to the guy in the blue shirt. "Nice night, isn't it?" he said casually.

Tristan turned to look at him, his eyebrow raised curiously. This was the guy that had been staring at him and Claire on the dance floor. At the time, he'd thought the guy was staring at Claire. But maybe... he'd been staring at him. "Hey, buddy, I don't swing that way," Tristan said quickly, putting his hands up defensively.

"What?" Edmund said, momentarily confused. As he thought for a minute, he realized what the other man was talking about. "Oh, no. No, of course not. Neither do I, I assure you. I was merely making conversation as we await our drink orders."

"Pssht, yeah, right," Tristan said doubtfully. "I saw you looking at me out on the dance floor. You couldn't stop staring. I'm tellin' you now, I ain't interested!"

"At you?" Edmund repeated. "Certainly not. I confess, however, I was staring a bit at the lady you were with. Claire. She is... well, was... we were an item. I suppose she neglected to tell you that?"

The barmaid had just brought them their drinks, but suddenly Tristan was more interested in talking to this guy. "No, she didn't tell me," he said. "When did you break up?"

Edmund tossed a few galleons on the bar to pay for the drinks, then he carefully assumed a sad face. "It was about a year ago. Things were going well, or so I believed. We went on a trip to the French Riviera, and I was even considering asking her to marry me. Then, one day, she just sent me an owl saying it was over. I've hardly seen her since." He blinked a few times, as if he was blinking back tears. "Until tonight. And she looked so lovely... well, you can understand why I couldn't take my eyes off of her." Giving a dramatic sigh, he picked up the drinks. "Mark my words, my good man, that woman will get under your skin and never let go, even after she ditches you."
With those words, Edmund turned away from the bar and strolled back toward Angelique. Along the way, he passed Claire again. This time, he gave her a wicked grin as he passed, then headed back toward Angelique.

Tristan stared after him for a long moment, unsure of what to make of what had just happened. He didn't know if he believed what the guy had said, or if he really cared. After all, Tristan wasn't exactly looking for a long-term relationship. But after what had happened with Evangeline, he didn't really need another woman getting under his skin, either. He just wanted to have fun, with no strings attached. After a minute, Tristan finally turned back to the bar, dropped a couple of galleons on it, then grabbed the drinks and headed back to Claire.
"Here," he said when he reached the table. "I got you a firewhiskey, if you don't mind. That's what I usually drink." He sat down and took a gulp from his glass, glad he always ordered doubles.

Claire continued to glance towards the bar and Edmund started to talk to Tristan. She groaned and turned away, there wasn't any telling what he would tell him. When he walked passed the table, Claire narrowed her eyes and looked down at the table top. She ran a hand through her hair as Tristan returned. "Thanks," she replied. Claire took a drink from her glass and stayed quite for a few minutes. There were millions of things that was running through her head that Edmund could have said. "What did that guy tell you," she finally blurted out.

Tristan looked at her, keeping his face expressionless. "I thought at first that he was hitting onme," he confessed. "But he actually said that you and he used to be a couple. And that you dumped him and left him broken hearted. I'd think he was lying, except he knew your name."

Claire couldn't help but laugh when Tristan thought Edmund was hitting on him. "I'm sorry, didn't mean to laugh," she said coughing. "I do know him. However, Edmund being broken hearted is highly doubtful. Yeah, we were, what I guess you would call a couple a while back, and I did dump him. I mainly thought that he didn't really care to much anymore, because he always flirts with women. I thought I would dump him before I would get hurt or anything." Claire took another drink from her glass. "So there, now you know."

"Ah. Well, that makes more sense," Tristan said. "I thought he didn't seem to be sincere. It was almost like he was trying to chase me away from you. But why didn't you tell me that you knew him earlier, when I first mentioned him?"

Claire rolled her eyes. Typical. The way things were going, it appeared that maybe she might end up winning, and he was just trying to stop her from doing so, that of course, she wasn't going to let Tristan know. "I didn't really think that that was really important," she said with a shrug. "Like I said, that happened awhile back, close to a year I believe. Although, I'm sorry that I didn't mention it. You're not mad with me are you?"

"No, I'm not mad," Tristan said, shaking his head. "It's just... well, it would have been nice if I'd known about it before the guy cornered me at the bar, that's all."

"Edmund is just Edmund. Don't let him intimidate you. He's probably just angry that I don't follow him around like a lost child or something like mostly other girls do," replied Claire. "Don't listen to him." She finished her glass.

"Oh, so he's one of those guys, then," Tristan said. "The kind who thinks too highly of himself and expects the world to worship him." He laughed slightly. "He must have really been insulted when I told him I wasn't interested..."

Claire couldn't help but laugh. "You must have really hurt his feelings then," she said. "I bet he'll go home and cry tonight." Claire winked and shook her head. "I know I would do that if I had be turned down like that."

Tristan laughed. "I bet he will," he said. He gulped down the rest of his drink, just as a slow song started up. "Well, I think I'm sufficiently rested. What do you think? Ready for more?"

Claire gave Tristan a wicked grin. "Of course I am," she said. Claire stood up and reached her hand out for Tristan to take. "I'm always up for dancing."

Edmund walked back to his table and handed Angelique her drink. "Here you go, my dear. I apologize for taking so long. The girl behind the bar seems a little batty, if I may say. I swear Ii saw her talking to a stuffed fish on the wall."
