Wesley took a sip of his tea. "I still can't believe that. His grades in school were never very good. He must have done better on his OWLs than in his classes. I haven't actually spoken to Tristan in a few years. We had a horrible argument the last time we spoke."

"Ah," said Evangeline. "The last time I spoke to him, well, it wasn't that pleasant. It wasn't really an argument, but still. What was your argument about?"

Wesley took a sip of his tea. "He was saying some things... things about muggleborns... Olivia was a half-blood, if you'll remember, and she had a number of muggles in her family. I had been talking about them, and he started saying things.... he sounded like a death eater." Wesley sighed, remembering how ugly the fight had become. "I told himI wouldn't tolerate such things being spoken in my house, and I threw him out. We haven't spoken since. What did you talk to him about?"

"That's strange. I remember once conversation we had had, I talked about muggles and the things that were going on at the time, and he didn't express any distaste in muggles," said Evangeline. She sighed. "Well, you see, I went out with him a few times. Well, he just left without contacting me or visiting or anything. One day Cassidy and I went in the Three Broomsticks, he showed up and I was still angry about it, and I confronted him. He said that he wouldn't mind hooking up with Cass, and I told him no that he wasn't going to go near her. After that, he left."

"You went out with him?" Wesley repeated, his eyebrows raised. He was a bit surprised, because Tristan had never shown any interest in Evangeline back at school. "You know he used to pick on me for liking you? But then... he had always had a crush on Olivia and was angry at me when I first started going out with her. Maybe he thought going out with you, then dumping you was a sort of revenge against me." He shook his head. "He used to do that a lot, you know. Go out with girls, then dump them suddenly."

"Yeah. I remember him doing that," said Evangeline. "I don't know why I agreed to go with him, I just did. That has been one of my many mistakes that I hope I don't ever make again."

"Well, I know that Tristan could be very charming when he wanted to be. And I really thought he would have stopped his old 'date and dump' moves from when we were in school. I'm sorry if he hurt you."

"Some people never change," said Evangeline, "And Tristan is one of them. It's not your fault, so you have nothing to be sorry for. Although, there is just one thing I really have to thank him for. He prevented me from being turned into a vampire or worse."

"A vampire?" Wesley gasped. "Is it just my imagination, or are the vampires and werewolves getting bolder these days? Just walking out among the rest of the people?"

"Yeah, that's what I have been thinking," said Evangeline. "I think that he knew the vampire. It seemed like he did, but was trying to hid it, but let's not worry about that anymore, alright?"

Wesley nodded. "Yeah, I don't really want to talk about Tristan anymore, either," he said. He reached over and put his hand on hers. "I'm just glad to know you're safe."

Evangeline blushed slightly. "Thanks. I'm glad to hear that you're actually alive. At first, I had heard that you were dead, but Cass had heard different. I was relieved when she told me that you were alive," she said with a smile.

Wesley smiled shyly. "Thank you," he said. "I wish I hadn't had to fake my death, or to hide out for so long. At the time, it felt like there weren't many people I could trust to help me. But now I feel like I wasted all that time that I could have been with Sabrina. I don't even know if she saw me before she died..." A terrible sadness swept over him, as he remembered that moment when Sabrina had looked toward the building just before the killing curse had struck her. He wiped away a tear and tried to smile at her again. "I guess it doesn't do any good to regret what's passed..."

Evangeline reached over and put a comforting hand on his shoulder. "No, it doesn't. It just makes you even sadder or even more angry about what had happened," said Evangeline.

"You're right," Wesley said. "I know that, but it doesn't make it any easier. All I can think about is how, if I had done something differently, maybe I could have saved her. I would have done anything for her to live, even if I had to die myself. She was too young..." A tear ran down his cheek, and he didn't bother to stop it.

Evangeline reached up and cleared the tear off his cheek. She felt bad for him. "I've never been in your position, but I know that you feel horrible for what happened, but you shouldn't blame yourself or anything. You did what you thought was good for them."

"I nearly lost both of them," Wesley said quietly. "If not for Voltaire, Natalie could have been killed as well. I don't know what I would have done if I had lost both of my girls..."

Evangeline sighed and put her hand back on his shoulder. She didn't really know what to say. She wanted to say she was sorry about it, but it just seemed like sorry wasn't a good enough term for what was going on. Evangeline frowned and slid a tad bit closer, trying to think of something to say, but nothing really came to mind, except for the words, "Wes, I'm really sorry about what happened. I wish nothing like that had happened. I don't like seeing you upset about things."

Wesley looked up at her and managed a smile. "Thank you," he said in a low voice. "I'm afraid that Sabrina's death is something that is always going to haunt me. She was so young... it just wasn't fair. But the thing is, she knew what was going to happen to her, and she went there anyway, to try and save Natalie. She sacrificed herself. And part of me wants to be proud of her, while another part of me is angry at her for being so willing to walk into her death. But mostly I just blame myself, you know? I can't help but think that if I had done something differently, she'd still be here..." He trailed off and began to wipe the tears from his face. "I'm sorry. I don't want to put this kind of thing on you. I guess I'm just not the most fun person these days. Not that I ever was, I suppose."

"No, no, it's alright," said Evangeline. "I'm not that much of a fun person either, if that helps," she said giving him a smile. "But, don't keep wondering the 'what if's. It's not going to make anything better."
