"I think it's something I have to fix myself," Lyra said with a quick glance at Nicolas. "But I need someone to talk to and I haven't been doing that as much as I should have."
In fact, Lyra had bottled up so many things in an attempt to avoid the pain or simply in favor of pursuing romantic happiness that her fears and anxieties were spewing from her sporadically and without her consent. She hadn't meant to talk about the foiled kidnapping, the event that Lyra now realized was the catalyst for her self-destructive coping mechanism, but the subject fell out of her mouth several times at her coming out ball. She was so anxious about Mason and Julian that her insecurities manifested in a subconscious attempt to work through her pain with anyone, including Sam's cousin Christine who was the most inappropriate person to complain about a kidnapping attempt to. Followed in close second by Julian who worried too much about Lyra to be healthy.

To make matters worse Samantha wasn't exactly the poster child for normal. She had experienced trauma and cruelty since birth, and while she knew it was abnormal - her mother hated her with a vengeance - she still didn't know what normal was. How was someone supposed to act after being kidnapped and tortured? How was someone supposed to act after a kidnapping attempt and assault?
Samantha didn't know. Christine seemed to be doing okay, then again she hid in the castle most of the time practicing for her NEWT exam, was that normal? Lyra obviously wasn't doing okay, but she was trying to appear happy and light, was that normal?
For Sam, normal was feeding off of the pain, fear, uncertainty, doubt, and anger, never letting anyone see that she was affected, then using the fuel to crush her enemies. Every time she was broken down she came back smelling like roses with very sharp thorns.
"You can talk to me." she said in invitation, "You can talk to Nik!" she offered as though Nik were her at her beck and call, which he was more or less.
"Whatever you need."

Lyra smiled brightly. "Nik might be sick of me," she said teasingly, looking at him standing off away from the girls. "But that makes it a more enticing option."
She looked again to Sam. "I wish I could repay the favor. All the favors, actually."

Sam just gave her a smile. She couldn't explain to Lyra why there was no need to repay her, she didn't understand it herself.
But Nik did. While he was standing off by the side, he was still keenly aware of both girls, and the growing realization of just how good Lyra was for Sam was startling to him. He hadn't noticed it before, Sam still didn't understand, and Lyra wouldn't have realized it either. Only Nik - who had protected, cared for, and loved Samantha for so long - could now objectively see the affect Lyra had on her.

Lyra sighed and made an indeterminable sound. "Too much emotions," she explained on a deep exhale. Lyra had been avoiding her emotions for too long and she was becoming overwhelmed by Sam's unwavering support.
She stood and moved to the tea cart, fixing herself a cup and trying not to cry again. These would be something closer to happy tears now, but once again she had given herself a headache which crying would amplify.
