If Samantha wanted pastries she could have simply ordered one of her many kitchen staff to make them for her. But Lyra wasn't bringing pastries because Samantha needed them or even wanted them. Lyra was bringing them to celebrate.
She held the twine that was wrapped around the pink box of sugar covered baked goods as she practically skipped down the hall toward Samantha's room. She knocked as she opened the door, not waiting for an answer or permission to come in.
"Look what I brought," she said as she came into the room with a huge smile plastered on her face. She held up the pink box.

Sam, with her sharp cheekbones and delicate figure, had rarely indulged in such sweets. Not that it was by her own choice, but her mother had constantly nagged her about her weight, and left her with other sour memories that spoiled treats for a long time. She had only recently begun to experiment with indulgences like Lyra had brought.
She turned from her vanity, placing her wrist on top of the chair where she sat and her chin on top of her wrist.
"You're in a good mood."

"Why wouldn't I be?" she said cheerfully, forgetting about the chaos that was their girl's night out only a few days ago. Lyra continued to feel the suffocating anxiety and depression that had been disabling her for several weeks, but those episodes were now broken up by Julian's happy company or simply the knowledge that he was hers and she was his.
Lyra set the box down on the vanity in front of Samantha, grinning from ear to ear. She could hardly wait to see Samantha's expression when she shared her good news. No doubt her friend would be elated for the happy couple.

"Beats me." she smiled, "Although happy is a new shade for the past few weeks. So you tell me, what's going on?" she asked still perplexed.
She was happy her friend was happy, but she was not expecting her 'good' news.

Lyra opened the pastry box and pulled out a pink macaron before falling onto Samantha's bed with a bounce, looking up at the ceiling. "Oh, I just have a boyfriend is all," she said in show of casualness that did not match the excited expression she wore.
"Julian took me to Hollywood for dinner and this thing called a movie. The muggles make them. They're fascinating! Julian said he'd show me all sorts of muggle entertainment. He's so worldly. You know he's promised to take me back there. It's in America. Julian said we can visit all sorts of places." She was chattering on happily, not stopping for breath as she praised Julian as being the most perfect boyfriend imaginable. She only stopped to take a bite of her macaron which seemed sweeter than normal, an effect she contributed to her love for Julian. He made everything better.

Samantha frowned when Lyra said she had a boyfriend. It wasn't that she was upset that her friend had found someone, but it was confusing and sudden.
When Lyra mentioned Julian however, Samantha sat up straight in shock. The more Lyra spoke the paler Samantha became and the tighter her smile.
She was good at not showing her emotions, she was a master at it, but she had no words.

Lyra didn't notice Samantha's tightening smile or stiff posture as she continued to talk about her beloved Julian, looking up at the ceiling as she daydreamed. "Julian picked me up for our date in some muggle automobile. I think he said it was a Leopard or a Jaguar. Some kind of big cat. It doesn't matter, it was amazing. We had so much fun and Julian even said he'd teach me to drive it. I don't know if I'd be any good, but Julian thinks I can do it, so..."
Lyra had finally rolled over to her stomach and caught Samantha's eye. "What?"

There was a voice inside of her screaming at the mistake her friend was making, but she didn't have the right words.
"Nothing..It's nothing." she said shaking her head, she put on a quick smile, "I'm happy for you."
"Actually she thinks that you're making a horrible mistake." Nik said at the door. He came in fully and dropped off some papers on Samantha's vanity, "These are the for the Versailles deal." he said then looked up at Lyra.
"I didn't say that." Sam said.
"You didn't have to. You thought it, and I said it for you. I agree by the way. Are those macaroons?"

Lyra was about to ramble on again about how wonderful Julian was after Samantha smiled, but Nicolas' voice halted her. She turned to the door, her eyes hardening as she looked at him. Her gaze followed as he moved to Samantha's side.
She sat up in a huff. "No one asked you, Nicolas! And Sam doesn't think its a mistake. She knows Julian and I are perfect for each other. You're just jealous because no one loves you the way Julian loves me."

"Sam knows it's a huge mistake, she doesn't just think it. And you are both messes, which in a way does make you perfect for one another, but no one who cares about either of you think that you should be together. Hard facts love. As for my romantic life," he gave Sam a coy look, "I'd say I've got it in hand."
He wasn't simply talking about Samantha, although he adored her and they were practically engaged. He had a number of ready and willing paramours to court him if not sigh at the very thought of him. He didn't need to prove himself in that regard.
"Let's discuss something else." Sam said wanting to steer away from the subject.

Lyra completely ignored Samantha's polite plea for a change of subject.
"Why don't you stop putting words in other people's mouths? You can hardly form intelligent ones in your own!"
Lyra was steadfast in her convictions. She and Julian were a match made in heaven and Samantha agreed. "If Sam thought it was a bad idea she would have said so. She certainly wouldn't have encouraged me to go after Julian! You're the only person who thinks we shouldn't be together. Probably jealous you won't have as much guy time with your mate now that he's with me."

"Because I spent so much time with him while he was sequestered in his house hiding from you for the past how many weeks?"Nik shot back.
"Enough! Both of you." Sam said with a sigh. Ordinarily she'd let her friends snip at each other since they both seemed to enjoy it so much, but Lyra taking up with Julian again was not a jovial matter. It was serious, and Sam would talk to Lyra about it, but privately and not where Nik could gloat over the matter.
Nik remained nonplussed and simply smiled at his quasi-nemesis while reaching for a macaroon.
"Damn, Jolene forgot the zoning contract. I'm going to have to go run a copy down to her, think you two could play nice for twenty minutes while I'm gone?"
Nik raised an eyebrow. He was not going to make any promises.

Lyra sat back on the bed as Samantha interrupted them. Lyra had found that she rather enjoyed the verbal sparring she and Nicolas engaged in, in a sort of masochistic way. But this was different as Nicolas was attempting to put a stop to the one thing Lyra wanted above everything else.
"Of course," she answered sweetly, with absolutely no intentions of doing anything remotely close to 'playing nice' once her friend left the room.

Nik grinned at Lyra. They both knew they would bicker as soon as the door was shut. But there was a slight hint of worry in his eyes. This wasn't simply a joke to him, despite how cavalier he sounded. Lyra dating Julian right now was a huge mistake.
Sam looked between them once more then sighed before gathering her things and exiting the room, kissing Nik on the cheek and giving him a stern look before she left.
"Now that the referee is gone, the gloves can come off." he said smiling at her, "Go ahead, I'm going to win this argument so I'll let you start."

"You don't actually think you have a say in this, do you? How naive of you." Nicolas could talk until he was blue in the face. He could warn her, threaten her, whatever he saw fit to keep Lyra away from Julian but in the end none of it would matter.

He laughed, "Of course not. You remain stubbornly constant and blind in your quest. I at least now know that your mishaps are from idealistic notions and pervasive predilection for punishment rather than any intentional malice." He shrugged.
"I would argue that you don't honestly think this relationship is a good idea, but I know you. And unfortunately you don't have much common sense when it comes to suitors. Or doing what's best for you."

She sat up on her knees as she looked at Nicolas. He used fancy words to make himself seem more important but Lyra saw through that. He was an arrogant prick who was used to getting his way. Lyra wasn't going to make it so easy for him.
"Well considering your idea of a good relationship is waiting around for a girl to decide that you're not the worst option out there, which I vehemently disagree with, you'll excuse me if I don't take dating advice from you."
"Julian and I love each other. Why can't you just be happy that your friend isn't hung up on a dead girl anymore? I don't expect you to be a fan of mine, but is being right so much more important than seeing your friend happy?

Nik used fancy words because he was a secret poet and loved the use of language. He didn't do it to appear pompous or make himself more important, that was simply a side affect - one that had bitterness attached to it - not that he would ever tell Lyra how he was bullied for the way he spoke as a child. His arrogance as Lyra liked to call it was really confidence, and well earned confidence. Nik was rarely wrong about anything, and when he was wrong he admitted it and moved on, but since Lyra was one of the people he was wrong about it wasn't difficult to see where she got her prejudices from.
"I don't think you'd take advice from anyone if it was against this absurd relationship you're pressuring Julian into. And as for my relationship with Sam, yes I love her. But more than loving her, I am good for her. She - and you - are young, as am I, as is Julian. She's had almost every decision made for her by her mother, and I - unlike you - would never pressure her into something she didn't want."
He was aware that Sam wasn't in love with him. He wasn't entirely sure that he was in love with Sam. He knew he loved her and she loved him and they worked well together as partners. She was his best friend, and she was more than attractive. It would be so easy to transition into a romantic relationship with her, but he could wait and if another man was worthy he could step aside.
"And I never said that you didn't love each other, just that it's a mistake to begin a relationship with foundations as rocky as both of yours are. He is still hung up on that dead girl - her name was Belle by the way and she was my friend. We were all devastated when she died, and Julian has never recovered from it. And you're wrong, I wish on all counts that I am wrong because I would love nothing more than for Julian to be happy, but for the fact that I know him better than you do and I know that I'm right. Is it so important to you to be with him that you would hurt yourself and him out of impatience and stubbornness?"

"I know her name!" Lyra snapped. "Belle Deveraux and she was gorgeous and he loved her. I know that. But he loves me now," she insisted to herself as much as to him. "I'm not hurting anyone, you ignorant ass. Julian is doing nothing that he doesn't want to do and if you don't believe me you can ask him yourself. He'll tell you how happy he is. I make him happy!"

"I see." he said clearly unimpressed with her reasoning, "Tell me something, if Julian died tomorrow, how soon would you get over it and be ready to love someone else? Would you ever get over it?"
He was exasperated with her once again. She may have found him stuffy, overbearing, and pompous, but to him she was childish, selfish, and completely unaware of human nature.
"Things aren't just so because you say they are or because you want them to be. You want this relationship so badly you're willing to ignore all the problems and that is why it will fail. He has problems Lyra. You have problems. Instead of solving those problems individually you've just slapped your relationship over it like a band aid expecting it to fix you both because you're 'happy'. But you're not happy. In the harsh light of day and in the minutes between the euphoria all the darkness, pain, and insecurity rises up and you drown in it."
He had moved from his spot at the vanity to where she was now at the bed.
"Go ahead Lyra, tell me I'm wrong. Lie to me like you lie to yourself."
