Dorian opened his mouth to rebuff her claim that the aftermath that he had witnessed 'walked the line' between legal and illegal magic, but her perfectly executed use of the serial killer M shut him up quickly. Merlin, he wanted to hold her right now.
"I didn't mean...Of course I want you to protect yourself, Christine. I'm trying to look out for you."
"Save it Dorian. I don't need you to look out for me. I am done being the victim. In case you didn't notice it was six on one. I did what I had to do to survive." she took a step closer to him so they were eye to eye, "I will do whatever I have to do to survive." she clarified in a strong voice.

He couldn't say for certain that those men got what they deserved, or that Christine wasn't in danger of bodily harm. He had only seen the end of the situation and couldn't judge it accurately, especially when it came to Christine's safety, but everything within him screamed that she had gone too far. And her stone-like words weren't causing him any less worry.
"I will always protect you, Christine." Whether she needed him or not, whether she wanted it or not. He still loved her, as wrong as it was he couldn't shut off that part of him that adored her over everything else. He would always look out for her, even if it killed him.

The moment between them was charged. Christine's blood still running hot from the attack, and they were toe to toe. There was nothing between them but an inch or two of air. Her emotions took a swift turn at his words, and suddenly she went from wanting to rip her attackers apart to wanting to rip Dorian's clothes off.
She inhaled and tasted the breath that he exhaled sending a warm shiver down her spine.
Her eyes fell to his mouth, as she inched forward, then stopped. She remembered every tear, every rejection, every piece of her shattered heart as it crumbled to the floor. She wasn't that girl anymore.
"Don't make promises you can't keep." she said taking a step back from him. She ran a hand through her hair and hissed at the wound over her eye, "Are we done here?"

He felt it too, and it terrified him. Any longer and he would have slipped. It would have been easy with the others gone now. No one to witness his transgressions. Just the two of them. Together.
Thank Merlin she stepped back.
"Will you at least let me look at that?" He gestured to the gash above her eye.

She noticed their isolation too as soon as she stepped back, she'd berate her cousin later for leaving her, right now she needed all her faculties to deal with the stubborn man she loved.
"No. You don't get to ignore me for weeks and then suddenly act like you care. It's a little ridiculous that it takes me being in danger for you to even talk to me."

"What do you want me to do, Christine? I can't control myself around you. If I talk to you, I'll want to touch you. If I touch you, I'll kiss you. It's a slippery slope that we can't fall down. I didn't plan for tonight. The call came in and I got it. I had no idea you were here, but I'm glad it was me who came and not someone else." Lord only knows what would have happened if one of the Ferreras had been sent in his place.

"You seem pretty in control right now." she scoffed. She didn't see that she had a great affect on him. For all intents and purposes he had ended their affair and moved on while she suffered and mourned the loss. It happened on his terms, he chose for both of them.

"Well, when you catch the woman you love practicing black magic, it keeps you pretty grounded," he snapped back. Dorian was not in control. He was not doing well with their separation. He spent all his spare time focusing on his new case or reviewing all of the reasons it wouldn't work between him and Christine to Lex, who had heard his diatribe so many times she could probably recite it by memory.

"I told you, it's not black magic." she said through grit teeth, "And you know what? How dare you." she shook her head at him.
"How dare you judge me and claim to love me in the same breath."
Her posture grew rigid as she faced him, disbelief written all over her features. "Don't Dorian. Don't say it. I get that I messed up and lied to you about what my name was, but I didn't lie to you about who I was. The girl that fell in love with you, it's still me. And it's me that you rejected, and you who ended things. So you can take your words and your broken nobility and spend it on someone else."

He couldn't listen to her anymore, and fought with himself against not silencing her with a passionate kiss. It would have been wrong on so many levels, the most paramount being that he would give Christine some false sense of hope for their happy ending.
His jaw tensed as he listened to her speech. When she was finished he let a moment go by in silence. When he spoke it was in a trained but compassionate tone. "You should go home, Christine. It's not safe out here."

"I think I just proved that I can take care of myself." she said evenly, "And we are way past the point of you telling me what to do anymore Dorian."
She was standing her ground. Her head hurt, her side, and other injuries were all piling up, but she wouldn't give him the satisfaction of running home like a naughty school girl.

"I'm not leaving until you're home safely, Christine. That can be in two minutes or ten. It depends on how long you want to be stubborn."

"Oh baby you have no idea what stubborn is until you've gone toe to toe with a Montgomery." she challenged him with a smirk, then shrugged and turned away from him and started to walk, "Fine then. Tag along if you wish. It's still early, maybe there's enough alcohol at the next bar to remove that huge stick up your ass."

The muscles in his arms stiffened as he scowled at Christine who was walking away from him. He followed her, taking long strides to make up the space between them. "This is the mature woman you expect me to believe you to be? You've got a serial killer who you damn well know is after you, and you've already been assaulted by a group of drunken men. But by all means, Christine, you should certainly keep drinking and ignoring all reason."

She kept walking intently, she didn't bother looking at him.
"This is the woman who gets to make her own choices in life Dorian. You don't like it, no one asked you to be here."
She opened the door to the next bar the girls would have gone to had their 'fun' not been cut short.
Finally she faced him, "I'm through hiding Dorian. It did squat for me last time, but at least now if he wants me he'll have one hell of a fight on his hands. I won't play the victim any longer. I handled those men, and now I'm going to clean myself up, and have a drink, and go home when I want to. Not because I want you to believe I'm some mature woman, but because I can, and because I don't really care what you believe."
On that note she went in the girls bathroom and shut the door.

Dorian followed her into the next bar. He listened silently as she ranted at him. He had plenty to say but it would only fall on deaf ears so he saved the effort. She left for the bathroom and Dorian followed her. He stayed outside the ladies room, waiting for her to come out. Whenever another woman wanted to use the restroom he turned them away. M could be anyone and he wasn't trusting that he hadn't followed her here tonight.

She emerged a little while later to see him turning another woman away from the bathroom, "For Godric's sake really?" her tone indicated how ridiculous she found his actions.
"Whatever, it's all yours." she said to the woman before heading to the bar.
"Bourbon. Neat." she said while sitting down, as the bartender left to make the drink she called out to him, "Just bring the bottle." and held up a small bag of galleons.
"It's going to take a lot more alcohol to get over the crap night I'm having."

She could have drank at home, but he bit back a comment about her parents not allowing her. He sat on the stool next to Christine and when the bartender brought her a bottle of bourbon he then asked what Dorian wanted.
"Water." The bartender gave him a dirty look, knowing he'd be getting no tips off a glass of water.

Christine had been at home. This was the first break she had taken from training since she and Bella began. Not only was Christine growing more powerful, she had grown confident. She didn't want to leave the castle which was reason enough that she needed to. She had been 'locked up' for months now. Besides, legally her parents didn't have a branch to stand on.
"So tell me something Dorian," she said knocking back a sizable gulp, "since apparently my presence outside the fortress is frowned upon, just how long does the Ministry expect me to stay at home and knit or whatever?"

They'd been over this. Christine never liked the answer but Dorian's answer never faltered. "As long as it takes."
"And you're not confined to your castle, princess. You have a team of security guards who, by the looks of it, you've managed to slip tonight. And I know for a fact Lex has accompanied you whenever you wanted to get away. You're hardly a prisoner."
