Lyra, with no marketable skills suited for a place like this, danced while her friends entertained themselves. She was never alone as there was always at least one man attempting to dance with her. The smarter ones bought her drinks and dumber ones just wished her a happy birthday. She laughed every time.
She was three sheets to the wind by the time Christine and Sam rejoined her, but that didn't slow down Lyra. She could go all night. "Good! Sam, you pick the next place."

Christine pocketed the cash, not that they needed it, but it felt good to win it. She glanced around the bar, it seemed that a few of the men weren't happy to lose their hard earned dollars.
"Yeah I think we've worn out this scene." Christine said sensing the aggravated stares.
"Let's go, I'll decide on the way." Sam added.

Lyra followed Samantha and Christine outside and smiled at the cold chill that hit her. The alcohol and dancing had made her warm and she found the night's air refreshing.
She removed the tiara and placed on Christine's head, then gave her the birthday ribbon. "It's your turn to be a year older," she said, giggling. Lyra didn't notice the men follow them out of the bar.

Christine on the other hand was well aware of what was going on around her. She kept the girls walking in the direction of another bar, but she stopped to accept the tiara and ribbon.
"Another hustle." a grim voice said a few paces behind them.
Sam put herself in front of Lyra, and Christine put herself in front of both girls, turning to face the men. There were six of them, and they carried the confidence and ignorance that could only come from being intoxicated and grouped together. Christine had been in enough bars to notice the intoxication, and witnessed enough drunken evenings aboard pirate ships to recognize the foolish behavior that could result from men trying to outdo each other.
"Can we help you?"
"You can give us back the money you took."
Christine bit her tongue, they could give the money back, but that could be as good as a confession to cheating the men.
"I believe a wager was placed and won fairly-"
"You cheated!"

Lyra was drunk enough, and feeling confident thanks to the enchanted necklace she wore, to address the men who were following them. It would prove to be a mistake.
"Don't be sore because you lost to some girls," she said with a taunting tone as she stepped out from behind Samantha. "I'm sure it doesn't make you any less of a man," she giggled.
Not amused by her teasing, one of the men reached out to grab her. "I'll show you who's a man," he said as his grip tightened around her arm.
Lyra screamed for him to let her go, trying to pull away from him. Her heart raced as images of the carriage ride with Nicolas filled her mind; the hooded figure pulling her from the coach and the ensuing battle between M and Nik. Not again, she thought in a panic.
The ring on her right hand warmed as her heart raced. It was signaling the Montgomery security system.

There was no time to prevent the man from grabbing Lyra, and the others too took that action as some sort of signal to subdue Christine and Sam as well.
Something shifted into high gear at the sight of Lyra being grabbed, Christine didn't even think before hexing the man and causing extreme anguish to ripple throughout his body.
"Get your damn hands off of her!"
When the others reached for Sam, Christine switched focus and sent a curse flying which caused bones to break and bend backward at unnatural angles.
Finally another man thought to grab Christine and subdue her. He succeeded for a moment with his beefy arms wrapped around the girl, until he started to scream in pain, wherever his flesh touched hers his skin blistered and boiled as though he had touched a scalding piece of molten metal.
She threw her elbow back before turning fully with a back hand.
Sam was struck watching her cousin. She pulled Lyra back and out of the fray, "Run and get help!"

Lyra didn't have to go far before she ran into a man wearing an Auror badge. "Please help! My friends, we were attacked." Lyra pointed to where Sam and Christine were standing, surrounded by men in varying degrees of pain and vengeance.
Dorian didn't need the girl to point out the trouble, the woman in the center of the small crowd was making herself well noticed. Dorian drew his wand as he directed Lyra to stay put under the street light. He approached and let himself be known.
"That's enough," he said in a commanding voice. His wand was trained on the woman at the center of the ruckus, her back was to him. He was unaware of who had started the brawl, he was only alerted that a private security system had been tripped and was directed to the area. Based on the pained look on the men's faces, it appeared that the witch in front of him had done the attacking but Dorian was too familiar with bar scene fights to think she had been unprovoked.

The dynamic of the fight had changed and Christine was at the center of it. While the men may have initially only wanted to scare the women and get their money back, perhaps steal a kiss or two, Christine's magic had escalated the situation. Their pride as well as their inebriation prevented them from surrendering and each of them wanted a piece of her. Some had even gotten a few hits in, but Christine didn't stop fighting. The fear and the power kicked in and she knew that to stop fighting could mean death, she was transported to her fight with M, cowering in the corner as she was helpless to do anything while Lex was wounded. She was not that girl anymore.
Dorian's voice didn't even penetrate until after she had swung on him, luckily it was a physical swing rather than a hex as she threw her weight into a vicious back handed swing slicing across his cheek. She recognized him only seconds before her fist made contact
"Dorian!"

Her fist connected with his face and he instinctively grabbed her by the wrist and twisted her arm behind her back. It was then that he realized it was Christine. He released her immediately and stepped back, his jaw tensing as he looked around the scene.
"What's going on here?" he asked as he looked at the men on the ground, their broken limbs twisted supernaturally.

Amid the grunts and moans of pain one man clutching his arm dared to speak, "She went crazy man!" he whined in a high pitched voice.
Christine snarled at him and he cowered. She too clutched her arm where Dorian had held her to subdue her. The adrenaline was still sweeping through her body that without an outlet she began to shake, finally she calmed down and could feel the pain in various parts of her body, there was a rather sizable gash over her left eye, and bruising on her side, but she was relatively unharmed.

As he often did when he didn't have work to occupy him, or Samantha to entertain him, Nik sought out Julian. He was aggravated by the tense relationship his two friends had and had thought to work at each of them from the inside. He was with Julian when he got the call. It took him an extra five minutes arguing with Julian to stay home before he gave up and they both apparated to the scene.
Nik went straight to Samantha and brought her close to him, but spared a glance for Lyra and gave her a small nod.
Julian felt his gut twist as he thought of her in trouble and nothing Nik said could have prevented him from going to see her himself.
"Are you hurt?"

Dorian looked at Christine with concern, whatever was happening to her he didn't like it. But he needed to protect her and a scene like this could be damaging if word got out. He clenched his teeth and shook his head disapprovingly. "Don't move," he told her harshly.
Against his better judgement, and against his oath as Auror to serve and protect the community, Dorian turned on the men. He mended them enough that they could walk, then wiped their memories. "You were drunk and got into a fight with your friends," he told the men. "Go home before I arrest you for drunk and disorderly offences." The men, slightly confused, turned around and stumbled away. Dorian turned on Christine.
"What was that, Christine?"

Lyra hadn’t expected the drunk man to grab her, but she was absolutely stunned by Christine’s response. Thank Merlin the auror was had arrived to save them, though Christine didn’t seem to need much help. By the time Lyra turned back around most of the men were on the ground. Lyra watched in an awe-induced terror as Christine struck the auror out of adrenaline.
Suddenly Nicolas and Julian were there, and Lyra wasn’t sure what was happening. She had forgotten about the ring Nik had given her until she felt it still warm on her finger as Julian approached her. Why was he here? Of all of the people to show up, Lyra was most certainly not expecting to see him.
She shook her head at his question. “No.” Her arm had a red outline of the man’s hand, but it would fade into a mild bruise and disappear quickly enough.

She was downright angry when he 'handled' the situation. "That was protecting myself, my cousin, and my friend. Now it's your turn, what was that? You just erase their memories and let them go?" The blood lust was still running through her veins but it had calmed somewhat, instead righteous indignation was taking it's place.

He saw the hand print and something hot went through him piercing him with an anger he had never felt before. It took him a couple of breaths to calm down. Lyra needed him calm as a testosterone induced rage was not the answer. "What happened?"

“That was beyond self-defense, Christine! That was…Dark. If I had taken those men in and gotten their statements, what do you think they would have said? No legal spells could have done that to a man’s legs. Where did you even learn that?”
Dorian had, of course, seen such carnage before. But rarely outside of his work as an Auror and only when dealing with dark witches and wizards. The scene struck eerily close to his current case, and he was worried for her.

Lyra was still in shock over the whole thing, and still plenty drunk. She wasn’t quite sure how to answer his question. “I…I don’t know. They were arguing and…I provoked them.”
A rush of guilt fell over her as she realized what had happened. She looked to Samantha. “I’m so sorry, Sam.” She really should have apologized to Christine, but she was busy with the auror.

"It walks the line Dorian,"she said about the spells she had used, "and the next time I'm being attacked I'll remember to stick to the useless spells I learned in school. After all they were so effective against M." she said with some heat. Christine was angry. She had been attacked. Again! And he was worried about her defending herself instead of the fact that six men had gone after three girls. If Christine didn't know those spells only God knows what could have happened to them.

Sam shook her head emerging from Nik's arms after having answered all of his questions, "It's not your fault Lyra." Sam too had been responsible for hustling the men from the bar. They all had their parts to play, but it was the men and only the men responsible for initiating the attack. "Nik's talking to the security team now. I think girl's night is over." Sam said with a small sigh, "We can take you home on the way-" "I'll take her." Julian said protectively. Sam gave him a dirty look, she still hadn't forgiven him for everything that had happened.

Dorian opened his mouth to rebuff her claim that the aftermath that he had witnessed 'walked the line' between legal and illegal magic, but her perfectly executed use of the serial killer M shut him up quickly. Merlin, he wanted to hold her right now.
"I didn't mean...Of course I want you to protect yourself, Christine. I'm trying to look out for you."

Lyra looked up at Julian as he offered to take her home. She felt a warmth spreading from her chest, and she smiled unconsciously. "Thank you, Julian," she said softly as she looked up at him.
