She swirled the glass and set it back on the bar, then turned to face the same direction he was.
She sighed, "Why are we always fighting Christian? What does that say about us?" she asked him seriously.

He took a sip of his scotch that was bigger than it needed to be, then glanced at Diana briefly before turning back to people watch. "We're philosophizing now, Diana?" He sighed, annoyed. "It means you can't take a bloody apology and I can't take no for an answer."

She gave him a look that said she wasn't amused by his philosophizing comment.
"I'm serious Christian. We're a mess. We end this thing, end the board members, and we're still going to be a mess."

Christian was silent for a moment, the muscles around his mouth tightening. "Get to your point, Diana." He took another large sip, finishing his drink. Knowing what was inevitably coming, he turned and ordered another from the barkeep.

Diana swallowed tightly, "I don't know Christian. I don't think I have a point. I'm just tired of fighting. Everything we do is violent, how are we supposed to raise a child?"

Diana was having the same problem that Christian sometimes had when thinking about Alyx. It was understandable as neither had met their daughter yet it was almost as if she hadn't been born yet. They were expecting an infant which they could raise and mold in, well, not in their image surely, but mold nonetheless. But their daughter was nearly grown. By the time they found her she wouldn't need raising. Just love.
"She's 16, Diana. Someone else has already raised her." It stung to say aloud, but he didn't show the pain on his face. He did, however, take another drink.

Diana hurt with bitterness, "That's not-" she started but choked on her words. That wasn't the child Diana was talking about and it hurt to think that they had missed out on raising one child together. Would Diana really keep him from another child? That wasn't in the cards, but was there a future where they could be happy together, really happy?
"That doesn't make what we do any less violent, it doesn't make it any better to bring it into her life at whatever age we do get to meet her."

He turned and looked at her for the first time in the conversation. "I wasn't planning on taking her to work with me, Diana." He spoke harshly, but in public he had enough sense not to yell.
"What is it you're wanting, huh? You want me to hand my business over to someone else? Change my personality to fit your idea of what a father should be? That's not going to happen, Diana. But it's not going to make me any less of a parent to our daughter."

She felt raw, she wasn't being harsh with him, she was trying to figure it out. She wanted to figure things out with them. What they were going to do, how they were going to manage it, but Christian just shut her down.
"Forget it." she said turning away from him. He didn't understand.

Christian most certainly did not understand. He couldn't be expected to understand when he was missing such a big part of the puzzle. He had no reason to suspect that in less than a year there would be another Ward in the world, one which he would be responsible for. He might have been more willing to have the conversation if he knew.
The truth was, Christian knew his lifestyle wasn't conducive to having a child, even a nearly grown child. He had started making plans to take a less active (violent) role in the business once they found Alyx. But it would still be his business which meant he would still have to get his hands dirty from time to time. He also would not be asking Lord Voldemort for paternity leave from his duties as the Dark Lord's most trusted hit wizard. His life would never be that of a suburban father's. That wasn't Christian, but he could make concessions for his new family.
"Consider it forgotten," he said as he finished the last of his scotch and left the empty glass on the bar. He left her there, deciding to take a few laps around the deck to see what was available to take his mind off Diana.

Diana left as well, hurting and heartsick. She did what she normally did these days. She let her feet take her back to their cabin and fell on the bed. Soon she was deeply asleep.
