He clenched his jaw again. Would this interrogation never end? It felt as though time had suddenly stopped moving altogether. He inhaled deeply and shifted his weight again before answering. "Yes. We met about a year ago. At a nightclub."

Dorian wasn't a very open person, that much was clear. She was about to go into how she had saved his life, and was willing to keep his secret, he owed it to her to open up a little, but she stopped herself. Forcing him to let her in wasn't right. She'd be patient, even if it wasn't one of her strong suits.
"I can't picture you at a club." she said though her expression said she was clearly trying to envision it.

Good Godric, woman, just let me resign and be done with this. The conversation was extremely uncomfortable for Dorian. Not only did it highlight his professional...indiscretions, but his romantic life had always been a very private matter for him. To discuss both simultaneously was beyond mortifying.
He opened his mouth and shut it several times before actually forming any words. "I was tracking dark wizard at the time. It was his night club. Christine was there..." He shifted his weight again. "This is not something I make a habit of," he insisted. What must she think of him.

She laughed. A bright tinkling sound. "I should hope not. Christine would skewer you." she smiled at him and then released a breath, she didn't really mean to interrogate him, but it was hard to get to know him. He didn't let many people in.
"Alright, enough about that...for now. What happened the other day with this?" she asked gesturing to his wound.

Dorian stared at her, bewildered. He had just admitted that he was having, for all intents and purposes, an affair with the woman they were charged with protecting from a violent serial killer and Lex was laughing. Giggling, really. This was not the response he had been expecting. He waited with bated breath for the verbal lashing and threats to report him that should have followed. But Lex simply changed the subject, as if just knowing the truth was all she wanted. In that moment Dorian both appreciated her informality and found it professionally unethical. But then, Dorian had no right to judge anyone on the principles of ethics.
Confused but happy for the change of subject matter, Dorian prepared to describe his encounter with the imposter Christine. His eyes scanned past Lex, who still stood in the doorway blocking the exit, to ensure the door to the bedroom was still shut. He did not want Christine to hear that a serial killer was using her face to lure his victims. It was a rather difficult story to tell, as the suspect's profile states they are likely looking for a man, but he was using Christine's face so both genders were in play. He stumbled over the pronouns a bit in the beginning, then out of necessity simply called the suspect "the imposter."
Dorian described his confusion at seeing the supposed Christine in the park, and briefly recounted their conversation. Then, ashamed, he admitted his error in letting slip their location. "I didn't realize I was giving anything away. We were alone, or so I thought." He paused, loathing himself for being so short-sighted. "I should have known better," he said in a belittling manner.

Lex may have thought it was unprofessional. Extremely unprofessional. But she wasn't like Dorian or her father for that matter, totalitarian, strict, abiding. Dorian may have feelings for Christine, but in having them he was also crossing some sort of ethical boundary that must have been deeply conflicting for him. He was going to punish himself over it more than anyone else could. For this reason, for selfish reasons, and because ultimately Lex had faith in her brother, she didn't push him.
She listened to Dorian's story, her expression giving nothing away. Lex wasn't surprised there was polyjuice potion involved considering the manner in which Dorian returned to the Hotel and interrogated Christine.
"Well maybe a little bit, obviously I wouldn't have let Christine leave." she admonished, then realizing he would take it harshly she punched him (lightly) in the shoulder, "Don't stress about it, you made contact with him, and now we have more to go on. Christine is safe, and we'll be leaving soon, so no big D."

"I thought she may have managed to sneak away without you knowing," he admitted. "She's had her fair share of daring escapes. Christine's not one to be cooped up." Although she continued to put up with being locked away in the hotel, Dorian knew Christine was struggling with it. When they spoke of their lives before their original meeting, and in the year since, Dorian learned that Christine was an adventure seeker. She liked to be on the move, see the sights, and ultimately get into a bit of trouble. Whenever she told of a new journey Dorian felt guilty for keeping her inside, but he reconciled this sensation with the knowledge that she was safe here so long as the killer was on the loose.
But the killer was still on the loose, and now Dorian had laid breadcrumbs for him right up to Christine's feet. "It is a big deal," he sighed, ignoring Lex's colorful destruction of the English language. "As he was running away like a bloody coward, he said he would be 'seeing her soon'. I stupidly spurred him on, giving us away like that." Yes, they were going to the safe house soon, but Dorian worried what would happen if the killer came for Christine before then. He had nearly died the last time, and that was when he didn't need two extra minutes to get in or out of a chair by himself. If the killer came now...Dorian clenched his fists thinking about it.

"He'd be a fool to try anything right now, this place is so security laden, and we've enough veritaserum to vet anyone that does come in." she said trying to alleviate his worries.
"You're feeling better, we'll be out of here in no time. Just...try not to get yourself skewered again."

Christine wasn't sleeping. She was exhausted, had been for days, but she couldn't sleep. Her nightmares had gotten worse ever since Dorian returned with a hole in his stomach. His wound and subsequent recovery had taken a toll on her. She knew before that he wasn't invulnerable, but here was proof. He had almost died in her arms and she would have lost him forever.
She laid on the bed wide eyes and contemplative until she heard voices in the other room.

Dorian didn't care if he got "skewered" again. If it meant he kept Christine safe he would take ten cursed knife to the stomach. Of course, he'd prefer it not come to that. "He was so quick with the knife. And skilled," he added thoughtfully. "He knew exactly where to aim and he didn't hesitate. He knew what he was doing. If I hadn't been so close, though. He looked like Christine, I holding her...him...the imposter. He knew I would let my guard down because it was Christine. He knew he had the upper hand."

Lex frowned, "Look, even you are human Dorian. I won't lie, your relationship with her does put you at more of a risk. You take bigger chances when it's someone you care about personally." she said knowingly.
"Tell me honestly, do you think your feelings for her are going to hinder your work?"

Christine was inherently against eavesdropping, you heard the worst things, but naturally she couldn't resist listening in. And of course she heard terrible heartbreaking news.
She was the reason Dorian almost died. It was her fault he was wounded, he hesitated because it was her. Because the murderer was using her face. He or she was out there right now using her face to commit Godric only knew what.
She listened as Dorian described the encounter. Listened and gasped when she realized Lex knew about them, but when Dorian said that he let his guard down because of her Christine went cold.

Dorian frowned as well, looking strikingly similar in some regards to Lex. Of course, he didn't realize this as he considered what Lex was asking. "I don't trust anyone else to care for her," he said candidly. Then, realizing who he was talking to, he added, "present company excluded." Although this clearly wasn't true. When he was at the park with the imposter Christine, Dorian had very harsh thoughts about how he would tell Lex off when they got back to the hotel. In his mind he had already replaced her.
But his response didn't actually answer her question. Obviously, his feelings for Christine had already interfered with his job. And with one success under his belt, the imposter would likely be bold enough to attempt it again.

"Uh huh." she replied knowingly. She didn't mind that Dorian didn't trust her. In her world trust had to be earned and while she was eager to learn everything about her brother, she didn't trust him well enough yet to reveal who she was to him.
"You know this will go badly for you if the Ministry finds out."

Christine didn't want to hear anymore, but she couldn't stop listening in. Her heart was hurting and her head was spinning. What if Dorian got hurt again? This serial killer was after her and Dorian would die to protect her. Why was she so helpless? Why couldn't she fight? Why couldn't she protect him?
Because she was only seventeen. She was living a lie of epic proportions and he was going to find out and hate her for it. His intrinsically noble nature would prevent him from seeing her as anything but a child, and he would blame himself for their affair. She had effectively ruined him, and now she could add getting him nearly killed to her list of sins.
Christine couldn't breathe, it hurt too much to think of what she had to do.

Dorian looked passed Lex again to Christine's bedroom door. "I know," he said despondently. The truth of his situation nagged at him frequently, but Christine's presence had a tendency to quiet it most of the time. Not only could he lose his job, but his reputation would be soiled. He'd never be able to get another job in the field, even in the private sector. His life would effectively be ruined, and yet he continually chose to push forward with Christine. In the back of his head he wondered if his feelings would be so strong once she was free to live her own life again. Would she still cry over his injuries then, when his presence wasn't forced upon her daily.
He looked back to Lex. Her career would be on the line, too, if it ever came about that she knew of Dorian's transgressions and said nothing. He was playing with too many people's lives. "If it comes to that, I will attest to your ignorance in the matter." It was the least he could do and why would anyone not trust him when before Lex had been randomly assigned to this case, Dorian couldn't tell her apart from Eve. There would be no motive in keeping her out of trouble.

Lex shrugged, "I can handle myself."
She loved the job. She loved feeling like she had a purpose and was accomplishing something, but at the same time she only took the job to get closer to Dorian. It wasn't as though she needed the job. Alek would probably be only too tickled to have her back at home where he wanted her.
"But it must be love if you're willing to stake your career and spotless reputation. You're one of the few aurors on track for promotion."

Dorian's jaw tensed again. The subject matter was becoming too personal for his liking. Lex had a right to know about the relationship, he reasoned, as she could be implicated in the deceit as well. But he didn't see a reason to discuss the finer points of his relationship with her. He steered the conversation in a different direction to ease his discomfort.
"Promotion?" he asked, as if this was news to him. He hoped she would take the bait and no longer push for information about whether he loved Christine or not. It had only been a few days since they had expressed their sentiments, certainly too soon to share anything with a colleague.

She sighed. They had been working together for a while now, but she was no closer to him than when she met him. A part of her wanted to shake him, the other wanted to ask if he would kindly remove the stick up his butt and relax, but she knew he had his reasons for acting the way he did, even if she didn't know what those reasons were.
"Just office talk." she shrugged.

Christine could feel her heart beating, but everything else was still.
She had to leave him. The thought twisted inside of her like no blade could. It was so much worse than a year ago, but the stakes were even higher now. She wasn't some girl he had met at the club, though at least now she was of legal age, but that information could come out and damage him as well.
She didn't think, or she had been too selfish to think clearly. She wanted him and paid no attention to the fact that a man who lived his life for the law was in effect breaking it several times over by being involved with her. Not only did she get him grievously wounded, she was destroying the man she loved from the inside out. Destroying everything he liked about himself, his principles, morals, values, the things that made Dorian, himself.
She felt sick.
"What have I done?" she whispered holding herself tightly.
