Dorian had spent the last two days in bed, with Christine doting on him and acting as his nursemaid. She was attentive and well intentioned, but Dorian could hear her worrying from the other room at times. She blamed herself for Dorian's attack, which was utter nonsense. Lex had talked her down more than once, he could hear their whispers through the door.
Lex's presence complicated things. As Christine fawned over him and his injury, Dorian worried that they were letting on too much. He started to suspect that Lex knew something she shouldn't.
Still bandaged and sore, Dorian could now move around the hotel unsupported. Christine was taking a nap in the bedroom, and in an effort to appear professional Dorian was sitting on the sofa reviewing a file he had delivered from his office.

Lex was going a bit stir crazy waiting for Dorian to be healed. Until he was capable of being relocated they were all stuck at the hotel and being aware of the intimacy between him and Christine made her notice all the little things that may have seemed innocent in the past.
She was in the kitchen looking over the rest of their supplies. Finally she settled on grilled cheese.
She looked over the counter to see Dorian sitting there, "Want a sandwich?"

There was nothing new in the file that he hadn't read at least a dozen times since they'd been locked down in the hotel. Lex's voice was a welcomed distraction. Looking over his shoulder to her, he answered, "yes, thank you." With only a little more effort than was normally required, Dorian stood and walked into the kitchen. "Do you need any assistance?" Sandwiches were easy enough, but Dorian needed something to do.

"If you're wanting something to do, you must be feeling better." she acknowledged. That meant they'd be getting out of there soon.
"Have you given any thought as to a new safehouse?" she asked getting out the simple ingredients she'd need to make the sandwiches.

He was definitely feeling better than he had been two days ago when he'd left most of his blood on the sitting room floor. But not well enough to hunt down the demented bastard who thought it amusing to wear Christine's face. That was the barometer with which he was gauging his recovery. "Yes, much," he commented, despite her personal scale.
"The Ministry had a few places outside of London. They're nothing compared to the Avalon, but they're safe and heavily enchanted. I've narrowed it down, but to be on the safe side no one needs to know until we are ready to move. I suspect that will be quite soon."

"Have you told her yet? About moving to a new place?" she asked. He was feeling better, better enough anyway for her to lay him out over his relationship, but she saved that for the moment.

Dorian remembered Christine's reaction when he first mentioned the possibility of going to a safe house weeks ago. She wasn't terribly thrilled with it. He didn't look forward to adding that news on top of her grief about his stabbing. "No. It's better if she not know, for the time being. There is no point in adding to her stress." He watched as Lex prepared their lunch and put away whatever items she had finished with.

Lex raised a brow, and surprising it on her at the last minute wasn't going to do any good either, but she held her tongue.
"Well you know her best." she said with a little more insinuation than usual.

Dorian's jaw tensed and he hesitated briefly as he put the load of bread back into the cupboard. He would ignore her comment, no good would come from pushing back. Even still, Dorian could feel his pulse quicken.
"Any word from the auror office? Any new leads?" he asked, changing the subject. Typically he would have been notified first, taking seniority over Lex, but in his condition it would be logical to report to Lex anything that might affect them.

She tensed her jaw too and gave him a once over. He was fit enough in her mind.
"No." she said looking at him. "No you don't get any information until you tell me what's going on between you and Christine."

Dorian froze. Luckily his back was to her or she would have seen the horror wash over him before he was able to compose himself. Having regained control of his facial features, he turned to face her. "You've been stuck in this hotel too long, Aleksandra. Maybe you should get some air. The other aurors are still in the hall, it's safe enough."

"Out with it Humbert." she said in that no nonsense way of hers. Like a picture of patience she drummed her fingers on the countertop and held his sandwich hostage waiting for his answer.

He lowered his head slightly, in the manner with which a parent looks at their young child on the first occurrence of back-talk. "I don't know what you're on about." He turned to leave the kitchen. He would be answering none of her questions today.

She stopped him in his tracks by standing in front of him, "Do you have any idea how badly your relationship risks this entire operation? You're too close to her and it's already proved entirely too risky." she announced gesturing to his stomach.
"Don't bother denying it again. I was there when you almost bled to death not ten spaces from here. I saw how you looked at her, and I saw how she looked at you. In fact I'm a rather large fool for not putting it all together sooner."

It is amazing how fast one can move when they are not impeded by an abdomen wound. Lex was in front of him before he could barely take three steps, and she blocked the only exit from the kitchen. It was a tactical error on his part, but then when he entered the kitchen he thought he was with an ally.
The muscles in his face tightened. Everything Lex said was true. He was putting Christine at risk with his behavior. It was his fault the killer knew where Christine was staying. Dorian was quiet, thinking on his words. He didn't like to speak rashly and this would be something that needed to be handled correctly. In the end, he decided it would be best for Christine if he admitted his guilt. "You're right. I have let my feelings for Christine interfere with her safety. I will recuse myself from her security detail."

"Oh don't be dramatic." she said with a sigh. She had worked too hard to partner him and she wasn't about to lose him now. Besides, he may have been too close to Christine, but she knew he'd protect the girl with his life and that was hard to find in people, even aurors.
"I just need to know that your happy parts aren't going to get in the way of the mission and that you're not going to pull another stunt on me like the one you did the other day."

He felt that this was the moment in which Lex would appreciate some witty remark about him trying to get stabbed in order to lure out the killer, but he wasn't in the mood to attempt it. It wouldn't have landed, even if he had tried.
"Our happy parts?" Dorian often wished that Lex would simply speak the Queen's English. She had too many phrases that were just utter nonsense.

She raised an eyebrow, something she was getting quite good at, then glanced downward, "You know exactly what I mean."
She crossed her arms over her chest.

"Oh," he said awkwardly and shifted his weight. "Right, well. Yes, of course." He cleared his throat and looked more seriously at her. He spoke in a hushed voice, as if suddenly the walls had ears. "I won't let any harm come to Christine." He couldn't swear that he'd have no more accidents, however. He had already vowed that he gladly lose his life for hers if it came to it.

"Well at least there we agree." she said relaxing. She looked around awkwardly for a moment, "You two have a history don't you?" she asked recalling his question the other night.
