The owl fluttered along and landed outside the window of the little Inn. It tapped its beak on the glass, quietly at first, and then more loudly. Eventually, it was rapping so hard against the window, it thought sure that it would poke a hole directly in the glass itself.

Sully and Rochelle were in the middle of a kiss when the tapping began. He tried to ignore it, but as it became louder and more insistent, he knew he had no choice but to answer it. Kissing Rochelle lightly on the nose, he said, "I'll be right back." Then he pulled on a robe and walked over to the window. Opening it, he let the irritating owl inside. It flew up into his hand and dutifully stuck out its leg. Sully untied the note, then unfolded it to its full siize and began to read:
To the Werewolf Hunter, Matthew Sullivan:
I have your sister, Ashura. She will remain unharmed, provided that you return to Hogsmeade and face me in a duel to the death. You have one week to return. I will send you a second note when you arrive at the Hog's Head and tell you the place and time.
Cordially,
Gretchen Thomas
PS: If Rochelle tries to intervene on your behalf, Quinn has orders to kill her. This is to be you against me, no one else. We have a score to settle.
Sully groaned, dropped the note, and pushed the offended owl out the window roughly. "We have to go back," he said grimly.

Rochelle sighed as Sully walked to the window and watched with curiosity. She recognized the owl when he let it in and frowned. Rochelle watched the paper fall to the floor and looked back up at him. "What's wrong?"

Sully walked over and sank down onto the bed. "It's Gretchen. She found out about Ashura somehow... and she's holding her prisoner. I've got no choice. I've got to go back and face her in a fight to the death." He put his head in his hands and groaned in frustration. "I knew this was all too good to last," he moaned.

Rochelle frowned and sat up, with one of his shirts on, and wrapped her arms around his shoulders. She was uncertain really how things would turn out, but she prayed that Sully would be the one to come out alive. "I'll help you anyway I can," said Rochelle.

Sully shook his head. "She says if you try to help me, she'll have someone named Quinn kill you. I don't even know who that is. Can they do it? Rochelle, I don't want you to be hurt because of me. It's bad enough that Ashura's in this mess."

"She's out of jail," said Rochelle, more to herself than to him. Rochelle and Quinn never really got along that great, and the last she heard from Quinn, she was sent to jail in France. "I'm not going to lie to you, they could, but don't worry about that. I'm not worrying about her trying to, if I help. I can tell you that make sure that you have your wand somewhere on you. Gretchen is pretty good at using one, and I wouldn't doubt that she would try and do something to you with it."

"Well, I was an Auror once, so I'm pretty good with a wand myself. I'd rather face her in human form than with her in wolf form, if you know what I mean. At least this way, we'll be evenly matched." He put his arms around her and buried his face in her hair. I knew I shouldn't have left Ashura... if anything happens to her, it's all my fault...."

"Nothing will happen to her," said Rochelle confidently. "Sure Gretchen is strong, but you could take her down in her human form. I wouldn't be to sure how well you would do if she turned, but I hope that's not what she's planning. Most of the time, Gretchen tries to be fair, if she can, so hopefully that's what will happen."

"I'm glad to hear that," Sully said. He kissed her softly. "I don't want to go back, but we really don't have a choice, do we? She says she'll release Ashura unharmed, but only if I come and face her."

"Well, she knows that you killed Buck, even though you were saving someone else. She still wants revenge," said Rochelle. "I think that Gretchen may keep to her word. She's good about that, but then again, she never stops until she gets what she wants." Rochelle sighed sighed. "How long do we have until we have to be back?"

Sully leaned his head against her shoulder. "We have a week to get back to town," he said. He thought for a minute. "Do you think I should write to Zander? Is there some kind of rule or something about werewolf packs kidnapping members of other werewolf packs?"

"Well, there sort of is," said Rochelle. "There could be a fight between both packs, and whoever is victorious gets the kidnapped one, or something like that. I'm not sure of what would happen. Yes, I think you should owl Zander about it. Maybe he could come up with a way to get Ashura out of there without anything big happening to her."

Sully nodded. "OK, that sounds good. I'll do it now." He kissed Rochelle on the top of her head, then got up and walked over to the desk to take out a parchment and quill. He wrote the letter quickly, then rolled it up carefully. "Want to walk with me to the owl office?" he asked.

Rochelle observed Sully as he wrote the letter. Just in his movements she could tell that he was upset about his sister and there was a hint of anger there too. "Yeah, I'll walk with you," she said standing up.

Sully stood up. "I just wish I knew how Gretchen could have found out about Ashura," he said as he walked toward the door. "Did someone in Zander's pack tell Gretchen, or did Korbel or someone overhear it?"

Rochelle followed him to the door and gave a shrug. "I dunno," she said. "But everything will turn out just fine, I promise." Rochelle hoped that's how everything would turn out.

"I hope you're right," Sully said quietly. "At the very least, it helps to have Zander involved. I hope he can help. I don't want to die, Rochelle... and I don't even want to kill Gretchen. I've had enough killing." He put his arm around her shoulder and began to walk out of the inn.

"Zander has probably already thought of something," Rochelle said. "You're not going to die. I won't let you. I don't really want you to kill Gretchen either, because she's like my family, but if it is necessary, you have to do what you have to do."

"I hope you're right," Sully said grimly. "I don't want to kill anyone. I've left that behind me now, I don't want to fight. I will if I have to, because I want to stay with you... but I'd rather settle this peacefully, if I can."
