Lesson 2: Summoning Charms

Amy gathered her books and headed off towards her next class. She glanced around. To her luck once again, Sirius wasn't in there. She wouldn't have to worry about her cheeks giving her away. It was stupid that she still hadn't gotten over him. For some reason she couldn't, but she was trying, and that was what mattered.

She took a seat two rows behind where James and Remus were sitting. At least here, she wasn't going to have to worry about any eyes on her and she would be able to concentrate, or so she hoped.

Walking into Charms, Rori didn't see Leo already in there. She knew that she had this class with him as well, and that was going to make it exciting like her other classes.

Rori noticed that it was not Lucie at the front of the room, but someone else. Being polite, she gave him a kind smile. "Hello Professor," she greeted. Rori took her seat in the second row.

Natalie Speller entered the Charms Classroom happily. When she entered she saw a few people were already there. Natalie walked up to the Professor. "Er... Professor Macrae? I got a note saying that is okay for me to start charms late as I wasn't here in September. And befoer you ask my name is Natalie Speller, you can call me Nat for short if you like."

Natalie looked around the classroom. She decided she wasn't going to sit next to anyone in the classroom at the moment and took a seat at the front. She hoped someone would be friendly and come and sit next to her and talk.

Bek heard the calls of her friend Maxi and laughed as she saw her waving her arms over her head. She walked over and took a seat with Maxi and another Ravenclaw boy she didn't recognize.

"Hey Max," Bek said, reaching up to put her friends arms down because they were still waving around. "Glad to know you're makeing you're makr in class early this year. What are you going for? Crazy or simply excentric?"

Then she turned to the boy behind Maxi, noting that he was probably the other part of Maxi's "us."

"Hi I'm Bek," she said kindly.

"I was thinking overly eager..." Maxi corrected Bek. "Make's it look like I'm more interested than I really am..." she laughed.

Truthfully, Charms was one of her favorites, she was looking forward to class beginning.

She saw Natalie take a seat in the front of the class. "Hi Natalie!" she waved.

[Seth Inophen]

Seth stepped in and stood by the door, looking around, he had had trouble seeing where everyone was sitting that morning, probably because his Potion had blown up in his eye the previous day. So he didn't really know who was and wasn't there. So he decided to stay by the door until a friend called him over.

"Seth!" Maxi called out. "Seeeth!" She waved at the Slytherin Fourth year. "Seth Inophen, come here, I can't believe you didn't see us!" She pointed to herself, Gage, and Bek.

Seth heard Maxi call and went to sit with her and the others. "Hey guys," Seth said. He smiled and took a seat next to Bek, who was reading now. "Guess what! I'm on time for class!" he laughed.

[Rebecca "Bek" Caldwell]

Bek put her book down and saw Seth take a seat. He noted the fact that he was on time and Bek just had to laugh. "Its a miracle!" she teased the Slytherin fourth year. "Phen is actually early!"

[carlisle]

Carlisle now had the names of all the students that had arrived. To his dismay, there were quite a few children not in attendance. They were either late, or simply not coming. Carlisle did not like this at all. But still, he wasn't about to punish those students who were able to make it to class on time by waiting for the stragglers. He cleared his throat as he stood, and walked around to the front of the desk. "Settle down now. We're going to begin." He waited a few short seconds for the buzz of the room to die down before going on. "I'm Professor Macrae. I'll be stepping in while Professor Wright handles some private matters." That was all the explanation they would be receiving from him on that subject.

"Now, let's begin." He turned to the black board and flourished his wand in its direction. A chalky print appeared on the board. Summoning Charms. He turned back to the students. "Would anyone like to give me a definition of a summoning charm? Ten house points for the first to answer," he added, to encourage participation.

[Rebecca "Bek" Caldwell]

Bek knew the answer and raised her hand. "The Summoning Charm, when cast, causes an object to fly into the caster's arms." Bek said, remembering what she had read from her Charms book.

[Maxi Borale]

Maxi listened to Bek as she gave her answer and then raised her own hand. "Also Professor, the caster must know the general area of the object they're summoning in order to summon it, and the farther away it is, the harder it is to summon." she smiled. She never really got to answer many questions in class.

[Seth Inophen]

Seth sat back in his seat and mumbled to Gage, "I knew that." Which wasn't exactly true. This is one of the hundreds of reasons why he liked having Maxi and Bek as friends. They knew all the answers.

[Gage Oliver]

"Sure you did Seth," Gage mumbled back sarcastically. He leaned forward in his seat, eyes and ears at attention. He had never learned Summoning charms before and was excited for the lesson.

[Samantha Montgomery]

Samantha didn't care that she was late to class, if it were up to her she probably wouldn't show, but that wasn't the way to start the new year. No she had to at least appear like she did care. She smiled to herself before entering the classroom...oh she would care.

Gliding through the doorway she practically floated on air the way she had been taught at Beauxbatons. She "humbly" approached the teacher with large lost eyes, "Pardon Professor." she said with a hesitating smile and a charming lilt, she lifted the note in her hand as if it were her last shot at redemption, "I was lost. This castle is ever so confusing."

The note explained her transfer and why she was not on the roster, it didn't go into details, but at least informed the professor that she was new to the school and quite capable of getting lost.

Quietly she turned from him after dipping into a small curtsie and looked towards the students in the class pondering where she would sit.

[carlisle]

Carlisle was overjoyed to see the eagerness in his students, even if it was only for house points. And both of the students that responded were correct in their answers, which meant they had been reading up. "Correct, Miss Caldwell. Ten points for Gryffindor. And ten points to Hufflepuff, Miss Borale, for answering my next question." He waved his wand again at the blackboard, keypoints of the lecture appearing in chalk.

Summoning Charm: delivers named items to the caster.

"As Miss Borale was nice enough to point out, the caster needs to know where an item is before summoning it. You cannot summon anything on a whim, as I'm sure some of you are contemplating now." He gave a knowing smile to the group before continuing. "The farther away something is, the harder it will be to summon it. And consequently it will take longer to arrive. It's best to know what you will need for whatever task you are performing, before starting. It would do little good to summon something from your home, while vacationing in another country." He paused here to wait for the class to catch up.

As he did so yet another student arrived. He took her note without looking over it and gestured for the girl to take a seat. He put the note on his desk to review later, he wouldn't waste the class' time by discussing it now.

Bek beamed at the points she earned her house. It was a little pet peeve of Bek's, earning points. She opened her notebook and took notes on what Professor Macrae was talking about.

[Seth Inophen]

Seth had started to take notes when he saw another girl enter the class late. She had curtsied for the teacher and then turned around, looking at the seats.
"You can sit up here," Seth whispered, hoping not to interrupt the class.

[Samantha Montgomery]

She nodded once and walked in his direction, her smile was discreet, but genuine or appeared to be anyway as she sat next to him in the cluster that had formed. Getting the brush off from the teacher she wasn't quite sure she should have come to the class she could have at least waited until she had her supplies. This whole bothersome business about transfering really irked her.

Settling into the desk she peered up at what the professor was writing on the board. That was another thing. Why did she have to bother with school anyway? It wasn't as if her father couldn't just hire her tutors. Then she could finish early like Caleb. Oh why did they insist she "go" to school instead?

[Maxi Borale]

Maxi looked over in the seat where Samantha sat down and raised an eyebrow at Seth. Samantha was very pretty...

But who was Maxi to judge? Seth and her were just friends. Just like she and Bek were friends, or she and Gage, or she and Natalie.....

Maxi simply rolled her eyes and took notes. She was suddenly in a bad mood.

[Gage Oliver]

Gage saw Samantha sit down, saw Seth pretend like it was no big deal, and saw Maxi's ears blow steam. He sat back in his desk, feeling that a fight between his group's Slytherin and Huffelpuff counterparts was comming.

"Uh-oh," he whispered quietly.

[Samantha Montgomery]

Sam couldn't help but notice the girl's reaction to her and almost winced. Almost. She recalled all her defenses against the snub and stiffened her spine. Broom handle, she thought to herself, keeping her eyes straight her posture poised. She didn't care, instead she summoned a quill and notebook before taking notes.
