Sirius laughed, and it sounded rather like a dog barking. "She hates me," he said cheerfully. "Did you see that look she gave me? It was like I was covered in Stinksap or something." He ran a hand over his face quickly, a comical look of mock terror on his features. "I'm not, am I?" he added jokingly.
It was just as well that Lily didn't like Sirius. He knew how James felt about her, and, in the best friend code, that meant she was off limits, anyway. And it wasn't like there weren't plenty of other girls left for Sirius.
"Come on, let's see if we can find Remus. I bet he's in the library, the prat. And what's Pete up to? I thought he was going to meet us out here."

James let out a loud laugh. "I think there might be something there that always causes her to not like you. Who knows what it is." He was joking of course. It still hadn't really occurred to him why Lily didn't really care too much for Sirius, but she didn't hate him completely. If she did, she wouldn't even bother, right?
"Remus is usually always in the library," he added rolling his eyes. "As for Pete, there's no telling where he is. Somehow he always sneaks away. I saw him earlier in the common room, but after that, no idea. Maybe he's in the library with Remus."

Sirius shrugged. "Maybe she thinks I'm corrupting you or something," he said casually. "She doesn't seem to mind Remus or Peter. It's really just me she seems to hate. Weird, because not many girls are immune to my charms."
As if to prove his point, a couple of third year Ravenclaw girls walked by next, both looking at him and barely holding in their giggles. He gave them a wink as well, but kept walking.
"Ah, well. I imagine I'll get over the rejection immediately. What do you say we drag Remus out of the library, then head down to the kitchens for a snack? Oh... maybe we should wait until I change into something dry." He nodded down at his wet shoes, and the water still dripping from the bottom of his robes.

"You corrupting me," James asked with a shocked look on his face. He started to laugh. "But you also have to remember, Lily is just not any girl." He could smile at almost any girl and have them smile back, but Lily, she was different. James hadn't been able to put his finger on it.
"You probably do need to change into something dry. We don't want Flich making us get into trouble for hardly nothing at all." James grinned. "We can take the short cut off the main entrance up to the seventh floor."

"Yeah, good idea," Sirius agreed. "I've spent enough time doing detention with Filch already.... I don't need any more."
Sirius gave James a sidelong glance. Whenever James talked about Lily, he got a funny little glow on his face. Sirius kind of envied him for that. Even though James was sort of dating Robin, it had always been clear, from the very beginning, that Lily was the girl he wanted. Sirius had never really had that. He'd dated girls (as much as a little second year kid could really do), and he'd even believed he was in love with Kris for a brief period of time. Now when he thought about that, he wondered just what he'd been thinking.
Still, even though he knew he was fickle and easily distracted, he couldn't help but wish he knew what it was like to be so focused on just one girl and know, deep down, that she was the girl for him.
"Well, at least you know one thing," he said, shrugging. "No matter what she says, Lily most definitely does not hate you. She may not always like you, but she doesn't hate you, either."

"She's in love with me," James said simply. He looked at Sirius with a crooked smile. "She just hasn't quite realized it yet." It usually threw James for a loop when Lily was nice to him one minute, then hateful to him the next. Now, he was quite used to it, but sometimes it still confused him as ever. That was the only explanation he could come up with, even if he did say it with a sort of joking tone.
"Or maybe she thinks that if she's nice to me all of the time, I'll know she likes me, so she has to balance it out by acting mean." James raised his eyebrows and gave a laugh.

At this comment, Sirius burst out laughing. He was laughing so hard that he didn't even really hear anything else that James had said. James was his best friend, and he was a great guy and all, but Sirius was quite certain that Lily Evans was not in love with James. They were all so young; what did they know about being in love?
Wiping tears of laughter from his eyes at last, Sirius looked over at his friend, unable to keep the smile from his face. "She is not in love with you, mate. She barely likes you. About the best I can say right now is that she likes you better than she likes me... which isn't saying much, seeing as she thinks I'm lower than bubotuber pus."

"She does love me," James said still with a smile on his face. "And one day, she'll finally admit it. Until then, she's just going to pretend to not like me that much." He was determined that one day he was going to end up dating Lily Evans. Maybe it wouldn't be this year, or even next year, but before he graduated, he was going to go out with her.
"You are just a different story, however. She just, doesn't like you very much at all. I'm sorry mate." James grinned at him.
"Anyway, I think what we should do now is go on up to the room, grab some of that special candy and give it to other people, what do you say?"

Sirius shook his head. "You are delusional, my friend," he said. "I'm not saying that she might not change her mind eventually, but right now, I'm telling you, she is not in love with you. And you better watch out, because she just might try and change you to make you more... respectable, or something." He shuddered at the thought. "My great-uncle Alphard says that all women really want is to change men, to make them into their own image of some 'perfect' guy. I'm pretty sure that's why Uncle Alphard is still single...."
Sirius tried to think about his own relationship with Kris, such as it had been. She had started out fun and cute and, after a while, she had turned something unrecognizable. She'd become pushy and demanding, and yet wouldn't let him help her with her problems. Maybe it was the girls who really changed in relationships.
He opened the doors to the castle and started toward the short cut James had mentioned. Very few of the other Gryffindor students knew about this short cut, and Sirius was pretty proud of the fact that he and James had discovered it.
"I think we should just leave the candies outside the Slytherin common room entrance. Just sort of sprinkle them around, like we dropped them by accident."

Following Sirius through the short cut while no one was looking, James gave a grin. "That sounds like a great idea! Those idiot Slytherins will probably pick them up and then maybe we won't have class for them." He let out a laugh.
"Of course, I would love for Lockhart to get one. Maybe we could owl it to him and write some note saying that it's from his secret admirer." James' grin turned into a smirk as they reached the Seventh floor.

Sirius laughed loudly again, and a couple of the paintings on the wall glared angrily at him for waking them. Most of them were not used to many students passing by them, so they usually had the halls to themselves.
"That is perfect!" Sirius agreed. "I'd love to get one over on ol' Lockhart. That kid is such a git. He thinks he's so charming and handsome and smart, but he's really just an idiot. He'd totally believe the secret admirer thing, too. As if anyone could admire him more than he admires himself..."

"Exactly," replied James rolling his eyes. "Although, it'll be funny to see him probably gloat about it for a bit, if he doesn't eat the candy right away. Of course, we have to create something else that will change something of Lockhart's appearance, just to see him freak out. Maybe we could dye his teeth black some how, or maybe make his hair fall out, or change colors."
James laughed at the thought of Gilderoy's hair falling out. "Or, you know what would be better? If we made something that would make him think his hair is falling out when it's really not."

Sirius laughed as well, imagining the panic Lockhart would feel at thinking that his precious hair had fallen out. It would be quite a scene, and Sirius couldn't think of anyone who deserved it more than Lockhart. The guy was so full of himself that he really needed a little dose of humility.
"That's a great idea!" he said. "I'll see if I can find a good spell that would work... or maybe a potion. I could probably brew something up, if I have to." Although potions wasn't his greatest class, Sirius could do a decent job when he was properly motivated.

Eva was lost. She wasn't exactly sure how she had managed to find her way to the seventh floor, but here she was. It had all started when the Ravenclaw came up with the bright idea of exploring the castle since Hogsmeade trips had been cruelly taken away from the younger students. Who knew what secrets the castle held? So with this goal in mind, she had set out from Ravenclaw Tower, and somehow managed to find herself looking out the window, showing her that she was very high up. And lost.
Her thoughts were interrupted when she suddenly heard a boy's voice. Well that was unexpected. I didn't know anyone came to this part of the castle...
"That's a great idea! I'll see if I can find a good spell that would work... or maybe a potion. I could probably brew something up, if I have to."
Spell? Potion? Was someone planning some sort of secret attack or something? Eva peered around the corner, a little afraid of what she would see. But to her surprise, it was Sirius Black and James Potter, two Gryffindors in her year. Eva said, "Wow. You guys get around. What on earth are you doing up here?"

Sirius was shocked to hear the girl's voice in the corridor, and he looked ahead to see who it was. He vaguely recognized her as a Ravenclaw in their year... and a cute one, at that. Interesting.
He shot a glance at James. They needed to get this girl talking to find out what she had heard of their previous conversation. After all, they didn't want it to get around that they were planning a prank on Gilderoy Lockhart. They didn't know this girl, so how could they be sure she wouldn't rat them out? What she needed was a touch of the Black charm.
He broke into one of his trademarked smirks. "Actually, we could ask the same question of you," he replied. "You're in Gryffindor tower now; we're taking a shortcut back to our common room. You're a Ravenclaw, aren't you? I think you must have taken a wrong turn somewhere."

Eva studied Sirius's expression as it changed from contemplative, as if deciding what to do with her, into a flirty smirk. Well, the Ravenclaw would play along; if she played her cards right, maybe she would be able to find out what they had been planning. So instead of rolling her eyes, she put her hands on her hips and giggled. "Yes, but the Gryffindor common room is a couple floors down. It doesn't seem that I am exactly intruding on enemy territory or anything. Though...I admit, I am completely and utterly lost." She put on a look of neediness and confusion.
Even if she wasn't in "enemy territory", she was obviously in their territory, so admitting to being lost definitely had put the situation in their favor. Especially since she had now made herself a damsel in distress. Ah well. This could be educational at least. Learn a couple shortcuts, find out what they need a spell or potion for...

Sirius grinned wickedly. "Ah, but you just said yourself, you are hopelessly lost," he replied. "How can you be sure exactly where the Gryffindor common room is? Maybe it's right there behind that tapestry, for all you know. Maybe that's a secret passageway that leads directly into our dormitory."
Of course it was nothing of the kind, and most likely there was nothing behind that particular tapestry but wall. But he liked to make her wonder, intrigue her to the point where she might forget whatever it was he and James might have said before she showed up.
"I'll have you know that James and I are practically experts on this castle. We know where all the secret passageways are."
This was also a lie. Although they had found a few secret passageways, they had by no means found all of them. One day, they hoped to find them all... but it would take a little more time.

He's smarter than he looks, folks. Eva glanced at the tapestry he had indicated. It looked like a regular tapestry, but of course, the Ravenclaw had only just decided to explore the castle; she didn't know any such shortcut, that was for sure. As for knowing all of them, Eva doubted that even they would know that after only two years of living here. "Well, you got me there...Clever," she admitted. "Though I set out today to explore the castle. I ended up failing miserably, as you can see, but perhaps you could show me a few shortcuts? I'm sure you guys have had a lot more luck than I have, especially since apparently you know all of them."
The Ravenclaw hadn't forgotten what she had overheard, but there was no need to rush questioning them. They wouldn't tell her until Eva could subtly sneak it into conversation, and even then, they needed to know for sure that she wasn't a tattle-tale. In fact, they might not even let her know any shortcuts yet. She sighed. Perhaps good things would come to those who waited.

Sirius eyed her up and down, his eyes filled with amusement. He was quite lucky that she had not decided to test him by looking behind the tapestry. The only reason they had chosen to take this particular "shortcut" was because no one ever came up here, even Filch, and he was the one they were particularly concerned about.
"You know, that sounds really fun, but James and I are going to have to stop by our common room so we can get changed. You might have noticed that we're a bit... damp..." he stopped and indicated his wet clothes and hair. "I... er... fell in the lake, and James was good enough to try and rescue me. But if you'll wait outside, we'll get dried off and changed and we'll go for a tour."

Eva felt a blush creep onto her face. Yes, she had noticed subconsciously that they were dripping wet, but it hadn't even occurred to her that this was out of the ordinary. "Oh. Right. I probably should have asked about that first, really. Seems like you've had an adventure already today." The Ravenclaw hesitated before continuing, "At least you don't have far to go to your common room. It's right behind that tapestry, isn't it?" She smiled and pointed her thumb behind her at the tapestry he had indicated.
Inside, though, Eva was excited. They had offered to give her a tour. Though it seemed that it was mostly Sirius offering, James was letting him do most of the talking. But if they knew half of the shortcuts that they said they did, this would prove to be a successful afternoon. And besides, she was making more friends, right? Well, one could hope.
