Lily screamed again when she saw the tentacle wrap around Severus. It pulled him under the water at first, and she started wading in further to try and follow him, in hopes that she could get a clear shot with her wand at the Giant Squid.... would a Disarming Charm work on the Giant Squid, she wondered? Or would that just make the Squid's arms fall off...?
It didn't matter, though, because she didn't need to do anything at all. Instead of dragging Severus further out into the lake, as she had expected, Herbert brought him in closer to the shore, setting him down in the shallow water at the very edge. Speechless, Lily watched as the squid seemed to wave at Severus, then disappeared into the deeper water.
Now she was standing in water up to her knees, feeling very foolish. With a gasp, she slogged through the brackish water and made her way back to where Severus was now sitting, looking a bit dazed, but otherwise unharmed.
"Are you all right?" she panted, kneeling down closer to him. "Come on, I'll help you get dry. I just learned a new warming charm the other day."

Sirius had missed all of what had happened with Severus. He was too busy trying to help James. Like Lily, he had waded out into the lake towards James. When he tripped over a rock beneath the surface of the water, he nearly fell face-first into the water himself, but was able to catch himself in time. But it did give him an idea...
"Accio rock!"
He'd practiced the Summoning Spell a few times before, having found it to be particularly useful. Still, it took him a couple of tries to summon the rock from under the water. When he did, he took it in his hands and concentrated very hard before tapping it with his wand. It shivered for a moment, then transformed into a floatation device.
"James!" he called, tossing the small life preserver out in James's direction. "Catch this!"

In a way, the situation was funny, minus a few details. James caught the preserver. At least now he wouldn't have to try so hard to keep himself above water. He could have made it to the shore if he swam, but the preserver appeared to be a better option.
As James grabbed the preserver, he finally to the chance to look in Severus' direction. Some how he made it to shore and Lily was helping him. Of course she was going to help him. James pushed that thought out of his mind and started making his way to his friend.

Severus's teeth began to chatter, he still nodded despite the fact that he was freezing now that he was out of the water and out of danger. He continued to cough up fluids and he spat them out as discreetly as he could. He knew enough to know it was rude to spit in front of a girl. he forced his teeth to stop by forcing his jaw shut. Once he felt he could talk without sounding like a muggle wind-up toy he said "Thank you for jumping in after me, You really needn't have done that..." he paused only to force his shivers away again and looked gratefully at Lily. "Thank you. For the Grindylow too." He wasn't one to express himself well when it came of softer emotions, but she had really tried to save him.

Lily immediately took out her wand and gave it a sort of twisting wave as she aimed it toward Severus. A jet of warm air seemed to fill the air around him, drying his robes and warming him up.
"It was nothing, really," she said, shrugging. "I saw you fall in the water, and I had to make sure you were going to be all right. I couldn't very well just sit back and let you drown or... be abducted by merpeople! Who knows what else lives in the lake.... You were very lucky that the Giant Squid helped you like that! Are you sure you're OK? You weren't hurt, were you?"

Severus felt a rush of gratitude toward Lily as she dried him off and told him she had to make sure he was OK. She asked if he was hurt and if he was honest it was his pride that was hurt more than his body. Not only was he caught off guard by the spell, he was attacked by a lousy water pest. The panic and the scuffs he got were more like salt on the wounded bit of his pride. "No, I'll be fine." he stood up stiffly and looked to see Black throwing a life preserver to Potter, and his eyes followed Lily as she moved toward him. A large part of him wanted to leave and pretend he came out the winner in the confrontation, but it seemed cowardly. Severus Snape wasn't cowardly. He straightened his shoulders and waited for Potter and Black to drag themselves back to shore. "I have to settle this though." he told Lily as he glared down Black and Potter.

Sirius wasn't paying any attention Severus or Lily at all. Perhaps this wasn't wise, as it would have given Severus an opportunity to attack while his back was turned, but for the moment, Sirius was only concerned about his friend. The levitation spell had brought James into fairly deep water, and even with the life preserver, there was always the chance that one of the creatures that lived in the lake could get him. "All right, James?" he said, as James swam closer to him. "I didn't think he'd drop you in so deep..."

Lily sighed with relief that he wasn't hurt; she was actually feeling a bit guilty that she hadn't seen what was happening in time to prevent it. She should have known James was plotting something, the way he and Sirius kept talking and laughing and looking between her and Severus. "Good, I'm glad you're...." She trailed off as she saw him glaring resentfully toward James and Sirius. She knew that look, not specifically from him, but she had seen other boys get that look in their eyes. It meant that they were gearing up for a fight. "Oh, no, Severus... please don't. Just leave it be... you already dropped James in the water--" she paused to look over her shoulder, almost unconsciously checking to make sure James was all right-- "isn't that enough? Please don't start a fight with them, they're not worth it."

Severus looked Lily's concerned face, how she turned to check to see if everyone was alright. She was so kind, but in Severus's mind, a line had been crossed. It wasn't just the name-calling or zapping spells in the hallways now. He spent so much time hiding, trying to to draw attention like this, but it followed him. He was filled with an anger, his sadness and self-loathing turned outward now at the stupid boys that tormented him. He wanted to be liked, but he got foul treatment instead. Their backs were turned, and it would of been perfect to strike them now. Severus un-tucked his wand and thought of a few nasty hexes to throw their way, but he snarled in frustration as Black and Potter floundered to shore and he tucked his wand back into his robes. "This time is the last time." he told her with a foul looking grimace and he marched back toward the castle, away from the two boobs that called themselves Hogwarts students. As he walked closer to the Castle his seething emotions roiled at the thought of those arrogant prats chortling on his departure. He promised himself the next time they tired anything, for he was sure they would try, He'd hold no quarter in meting out what he could to teach them never to muck with his person again. The promise of being extra vindictive soothed his rage to a simmer.

James wasn't even thinking about Severus attacking them back at the moment. As soon as James could, he stood up in the lake. "Oh, I had an idea that he was going to drop me in deep," he said running his hands quickly through his hair to get the excess water out.
"Snivellus is finally getting a backbone," James said with his eyebrows raised. Of course the fact that Severus also threw him in the lake wasn't going to ultimately cause him to stop playing pranks.
He made his way to shore. Without really thinking about it, James' eyes went toward Lily then he looked back to Sirius. "At least we know that he's got some fight in him," he said with a shrug.

Lily sighed with relief as Severus finally turned around and made his way back to the castle. Lily didn't want to see Severus and James and Sirius fighting each other... Poor Severus would be outnumbered two to one. It would be even worse if Peter and Remus joined them, even though she knew that Remus wouldn't join, and Peter would just watch. Still, it would feel like Severus was against all four of them, and it wasn't fair.
After she had used the drying spell on her feet and the bottom of her robes, Lily hastily pulled on her shoes and socks and turned to look at Sirius and James, who had finally made it to shore. Her green eyes flashing furiously, she marched up to them and slapped James full on the face. She might not have wanted Severus to fight back, but she didn't think James deserved to get away with it, either. And she knew that James would never hex her.
"You... you bully!" she shouted at him. "How could you do that? I know it was you... he could have drowned or been dragged into the water by grindylows! Are you proud of yourself?"

James was not paying attention to the fact that Lily was coming in his direction until he turned back around to see if she left. The greeting he got when he turned around was something he was not expecting at all. Lily's hand came across his face, hard. Naturally, James would never hit a girl, especially Lily. Lily was also the one person he would never hex.
Once James turned to look back to the red head in front of him, he kept down the swears he wanted to let out. There was no denying that it was him. He could have said something extremely mean, but he couldn't let the words out. James wanted to just keep his mouth shut and walk away from her. It hurt worse knowing that it was her that was doing the yelling and that it was her hand that crossed his face. This was drawing the line with her.
"It wasn't exactly supposed to happen like that," he finally said.

She was just so... disappointed in him. There was a part of her that wanted to believe in James, to believe that he wasn't as much of a jerk as he often seemed to be. But any time Lily started to let herself believe in him, he did something like this. It was upsetting... she really believed he was better than this. Why did boys have to be so annoying and obnoxious, anyway?
"Oh, really, James?" she retorted furiously. "And how was it supposed to happen? Maybe Severus was supposed to trip and fall face-first in the mud and come up with a muddy face, while no one noticed that it was you who cast the trip jinx? Is that it, James? You weren't supposed to get caught?"
She shook her head and released an angry sigh. "Honestly, James... It was so unnecessary. He wasn't doing anything to you at all. He was just minding his own business, and you just tripped him, just because you could. Of course he was going to fight back... and you could have been hurt, too.... I'm glad you weren't, but hopefully you learned your lesson!"

"Well, I didn't think about that one," James said glancing at Sirius. "And I don't care if I was caught because it's usually obvious who did it anyway." That was true. The boys were known for pulling pranks on people and nine times out of ten, it was them, there was no denying that.
"Just calm down Evans. Your friend wasn't hurt, okay?" It didn't pass his ears that she sounded like she was concerned, even if she did sound angry. James couldn't help it, he allowed a smile to cross his face. "You were worried about me, huh," he asked with his eyebrows rising. It was apparent that James didn't really learn his lesson, or whatever lesson Lily was referring to that he was supposed to have learned.
James turned to Sirius. "Let's leave this lady alone. I believe we still have some signs to think up for Astronomy." He looked back to Lily and gave her a wink.

Lily scowled at him. The smirk that crossed his face just fed her anger even more. "I was worried about both of you!" she cried, exasperated. "I wouldn't want either of you to just drown in the lake right in front of me, now, would I? Although in your case," she added, casting a scathing look at Sirius, "I might make an exception!"
She let out a sigh and shook her head at James again. "Anyway, what you did was mean and stupid. I wouldn't have thought you would be either of those things, but I guess I was wrong."
Then she turned and started to walk away, but suddenly seemed to think better of it. She turned back to him, and pointed her wand at him. "You know, it would serve you right if I hexed you right now... But I won't." Instead, she murmured an incantation, and cast the same warming spell she had used on Severus. Warm air came out of her wand, drying his wet hair and robes.

James couldn't help but let out a laugh at the look Lily gave Sirius. He calmed his laughter. Knowing that she was worried made him feel a lot better, but of course he wasn't going to voice that outloud with Sirius standing there.
He didn't move as Lily turned around, he only looked at her curiously. James had a feeling that Lily wouldn't hex him, even he did annoy her, but he wasn't going to really test those waters. He didn't really know what she was doing until he felt warm air. The next thing he knew, he was completely dry. His expression softened as he gave her a look that said thank you.
James let his eyes linger on Lily for a second longer before turning back to Sirius. "Come on, Sirius."

Sirius widened his eyes in an innocent expression. He knew that Lily didn't like him, and he could have tried charming her... but there was an unspoken agreement between them that Lily was off limits for anyone but James. Strange how she often seemed to blame Sirius for things, instead of James...
"Hey, what'd I do?" he protested, but was largely ignored.
He kept silent as Lily used a warming charm to dry James' wet clothes, leaving Sirius standing there with water still dripping from the bottom of his robe. As he and James walked away, Sirius attempted the same spell, but couldn't quite get it to work.
"Well, it looks like you've got her attention, anyway," he said at last. "Unfortunately, so has Snivellus."

As he and Sirius walked away from Lily, James gave Sirius a sideways glance then rolled his eyes. "Snivellus' attention doesn't matter. I'm positive that whatever he can think of, we can think of something a lot worse." He let a grin grow on his face. "It's nothing I nor you have to really worry about."
James knew he wouldn't seriously hurt anyone for no reason. Playing pranks was one thing, but seriously hurting someone else was something else. He hoped that some of their pranks wouldn't escalate into hurting anyone. However, this was not really on James' mind. His mind was still on the fact that Lily was nice to him, even though she fussed at him. The look on her face was still left in his mind and he did what he could to keep the smile that he was feeling to not appear on his face.

"Oh, I didn't say I was worried," Sirius shrugged. "I'm just saying... I feel like we might have just declared war back there. And Lily's going to get herself caught in the middle of it. I just hope you're prepared for that."
They passed a couple of Hufflepuff girls who were walking close together and giggling, and Sirius flashed a sly grin and a wink in their general direction. As expected, this caused both girls to giggle even more.
"Anyway, it was pretty nice of her to dry off your robes like that," he continued. "I wish she would have used it on me, though, I think I've got Fresh-water Plimpies in my shoes." He paused to shake out his foot, then glanced back at James, who had a distinctly soppy smile on his face.
"Oh, Merlin. Here we go. You haven't even heard a word I've said, have you? You're too busy thinking about her."

James snapped out of his thoughts. His trying to keep the smile off his face didn't work as well as he planned. "No, no, I heard you. If Snivellus wants a war, we can give him a war." Lily would be caught in the middle of it but James had a little too much pride sometimes. He would always fight back. However, he wondered if there was sort of a little war between them if Lily would stay away from him. There was the whole incident at the lake a few moments before, but she ended up drying off his robes, didn't she? He was going to have to think about a few things.
"It was nice of her to dry off my robes." Again, without James realizing it, there was a small smile that appeared on his face. "And I don't think she likes you that much Sirius," he added with a laugh.
