Jodi shuffled towards the front of the great hall, following the other first years. She had no clue what to expect. After all, she didn't know anyone who had ever been to Hogwarts. She really hoped she would be able to make some friends here. As exciting as this all was, not having any good friends for the next seven years could possibly make her want to return to Leadworth. It's only the first day, she reminded herself, there is still plenty of time to meet people. Jodi was still nervous, and she wasn't even able to use one of her- she noticed the ceiling. It was all- sparkly. It was glittering. But what was glittering? Were there fireflies in here? No wait those were stars. Wow. "How did they do that?" she said to herself. Then she remembered, "Oh, magic, duh, I go to magic school now. That's probably normal." Jodi was so distracted by her thoughts that she accidentally walked right into the boy in front of her. "Oh! I'm so sorry. So sorry."
As the line approached the front Jodi realized that someone, one of the teachers she assumed, was calling their names. As each name was called the first year it belonged to would sit on a stool and try on a hat. They would sit there for a moment, looking scared and occasionally muttering to themselves, before a voice- coming from, from the hat- called out one of the houses. The student would then sit at the corresponding table. That's it? All we have to do is try on the hat?
However when her own name was called Jodi nearly fainted. She managed to get to the front before collapsing on the stool and placing the hat on her head. Her heart was racing, and she could barley breathe. Oh no. What am I supposed to do now? she thought to herself, wondering if she was doing something wrong.

Cindy stood in line, growing more impatient with each student that went before her. She just wanted her name to be called so she could find out who she'd be living and learning with. As she waited, she looked around her, measuring up everyone in her mind, who she would want to be friends with, who she would be able to use for things she wanted, what boys to look for, and who would become a good friend. She always judged people before she got to know them, but that's something she had always done, so it didn't bother her too much. Finally, her name was called and she went up and sat on the stool, knowing she'd have to brush her hair afterwards. She glanced nervously at the tables, wondering who would become her housemates.

Maura stood next to her sister, gripping her hand tightly. She was nervous but she tried to hold it all in. She knew her sister was even more nervous and needed her to act strong. So she merely bit her lip as she usually did while concentrating and pulled it together. She watched as Amber went ahead of her and cheered for as she was sorted, hoping they were in the same house. She heard her name right after and walked up to the sorting hat, sitting on the stool. She bit her lip again as he said...

Post by Georgie Bishop on Jul 11, 2010 18:23:30 GMT -5
By the time the row of first years finally filed into the Great Hall Georgie was sure that her eyes had to be the size of a couple of saucers at the very least. From the moment she had stepped out of the steaming train and seen the castle perched high up on a hill further away, she had half-expected to be shaken awake by her mother with the message that she was going to be late for some regular and boring school out there in the real world.
If nothing else then the boat ride across the lake had made her certain that this was no dream. The smallest sign of magic still intrigued her up to the point where a smug looking boy had told her to close her mouth. Even so, as the small wooden boats slid out onto the mirror like surface of the lake without anyone powering them in the way muggles thought of power, she hadn't been able to keep a sheepish grin from crossing her face.
Now that she was standing in the same room as the rest of the students, however, she felt a small twinge of nervousness settling in the pit of her stomach. What if she ended up in some horrible house where everyone acted like that boy had done earlier? Or worse yet, what if she couldn't do what ever task they would be asked to accomplish? She didn't know if she could face her parents if she was sent home on the very first day...
A collective sigh of awe made her resurface from her dark thoughts and Georgie followed the movement of the students standing in front of her, looking up at the ceiling above her head. As she did, all thoughts of fear and nervousness left her as she stared up into a clear night sky. Tiny stars blinked back at her. light spots in a sea of darkness.
The sight of the night sky compressed and magically captured inside the hall had her so stunned that she didn't look down until the song that started soon after was half-way finished. When she did, however, she could hardly suppress a giggle as she noticed a hat placed on a stool at the center of the room who appeared to be signing. This earned her another scornful look from the boy who looked like he was smelling something bad, but she no longer cared. There was far too much to look at and to think about to give him any attention.
Then the song ended and the hat began calling out names. Georgie had heard about the different houses at Hogwarts from one of the girls she had shared a compartment with during the train ride to the school, so she knew a little of what it meant. Relief and nervousness both fought for a place in her stomach as she realized that the only thing they would be asked to do, was to try the hat on.
Apparently she wasn't the only one who was nervous, however, and Georgie could she that the mouse blond girl she had stuck with since arriving at the train station was pale as a ghost. Sending her a small smile, Georgie found her hand and gave it an encouraging squeeze. Minutes after her name was called and she walked forward trying to look as confident as she possibly could.
The short walk over to the stool seemed to last an eternity. Sitting down tentatively she only had the time to glimpse upwards before the hat was lowered over her head and subsequently also her eyes.
Please let me end up in a house that will accept me, she thought nervously.

Babette waits in line silently, which is quite unusual for her. She nudges the small child next to her to go on up, and fear not, even though she too is afraid. She has high hopes for Hufflepuff, and hopes she doesn't get Ravenclaw, considering that she is not all that smart. She waits eagerly while everyone else is called, except for her. It is quite unusual for her because her name is always first. "Perhaps the administrators don't have the list in alphabetical order." she says to herself. Her name is called. She fakes a smile, while inside she is terrified. The gigantic hat is placed on her head. She laughs because in her mind, it tickles. She hears the hat breathing, and with every breath, her palms sweat more. "Be brave, Babette. It's not like it hurts." she reassures herself. The hat takes a deep breath in, and....

Amber stood in line in front of her sister, holding her sister's hand. Amber was so nervous about being around all these people, laughing and talking with one another. She was afraid to say anything to anyone, afraid they wouldn't want to talk to her. She didn't want to go before her sister, but it was done by alphabetical order, so Amber had no choice. When her name was called, she reluctantly let go of Maura's hand and stepped up to the stool. She looked out to everyone seated and closed her eyes, feeling like she was going to pass out from all the students looking at her.

Ivy was all smiles waiting. She couldn't wait to get to know the people she would be going to school with the next seven years, and couldn't wait to see who would become her friends and who would become enemies, and which ones she could talk about. Ivy already had about three people picked out to be friends, she just needed to talk to them. That is, if they were someone she could see herself getting along with. Ivy decided to see where they were sorted first. Finally, after waiting seemingly forever, Ivy stepped up and sat on the stool, her smile never leaving her face as she looked out to the students of Hogwarts.

Gryffindor... however, can I make you a 5th year or 7th year, instead of a 6th year? There are more than a dozen 6th year Gryffindor girls, which is why I currently have a ban on them.

Marcus walked through the double doors, following the boys from the boat. He wasn't really paying attention to his path, but was studying the students already seated at long tables on either side of him. He found himself frowning as his eyes met with an evil-looking blonde-haired girl. She looked to be about sixteen, and was seated with other children underneath the green banners. Marcus mentally berated himself for frowning, it wasn't polite to judge people before you know them. One of the many life lessons his mother had taught him.
Turning to the front of the room, he was met with a strange sight. A tattered old hat had been placed on a small stool, and it appeared to be singing. Marcus grinned slightly. Singing hats, bottomless lakes and boats with no oars. He couldn't wait to see what else was in-store! Although, if the books he had bought were to be believed objects could be transformed, potions could influence your thoughts and dragons were real. Singing hats really weren't that odd here.
As students were called up to the hat, Marcus began to wish he had payed more attention to the conversations on the train, rather than reading his books. The hat was separating students into four houses, that supposedly were known for certain attributes. What those were, however, he had no idea. Marcus heard his name, and stepped quickly up to the stool...
