Janelle was bouncing in her seat as she waited for them to call her name. She kept glancing around at the other kids and then looking up to see if she could spot her sisters. When she finally did see them, both at the Slytherin table, she waved, enthusiastically.
This place was amazing to her. Even just the dinning hall, which was pretty much all she had seen so far, was amazing. The ceiling reflected the almost perfect night sky and the crescent moon reminded her of her tabby cat, who, she hoped, was ok being in his cage until she got her house assigned and got to her dorm to let him out.
She watched as the sorting hat sang and began to separate the kids out according to house. She wondered how it worked. Was it a charm on the hat? Maybe it was someone who got transfigured into a hat. There were so many possibilities as to how the hat was able to think and talk.
Janelle had made up her mind to try to find out and learn everything she could about it all. She was very smart, and did love to learn. So, she couldn't wait till she could start.

Post by Elisabetta Domenici on Sept 29, 2012 23:25:29 GMT -5
Elisabetta yawned quietly as she stood with the other first-years in front of an old hat. She knew what was going on--her parents had explained this to her the day she got her Hogwarts letter, so she'd had a bit of time to get used to the idea of putting on a talking hat. Looking around at the other first-year students, she wondered why some of them were trembling; after all, it wasn't like they had to fight a troll. The hat was just going to tell them where they belonged, that was all.
"It's no big deal!" she hissed to the person behind her, who had just let out a small whimper of anxiety."All you do is put the hat on. Don't be such a baby!" She rolled her eyes when the girl said something to the effect of "I can't help it," then continued to wait until her name was called. When she finally heard "Domenici, Elisabetta," she walked quite confidently up to the hat, jammed it on her head eagerly and waited for it to announce her house.

Shen stared out at the crowded Great Hall. He fidgeted a little in his place in line, shifting from one foot to the other as he tried to take in everything at once against the weighing pressure of the Sorting. This was it, after all. He was really, finally at Hogwarts. His gaze flicked from the floating candles and the fascinating things about the room itself, to his new classmates' nervous faces, to the older students, to the teachers, and finally to the Slytherin table. That was where he'd imagined he'd like to be. But how could a first year know without having ever set foot in Hogwarts? Maybe tomorrow he'd find out that he really hated Slytherin, and would turn out to be a Hufflepuff, or worse a Gryffindor! Hopefully that wasn't the case. Maybe he'd be a Ravenclaw if he didn't merit Slytherin; he was smart, and it sounded alright.
Yeah, he wouldn't be so lucky as to have his first choice work out, would he? Ravenclaw it was for sure.
He was still staring out at the students when the boy from the Hogwarts Express next to him gave him a nudge. "Eleanor, Shendeth!" Oh! That's me.. With the gaze of the hundred onlookers centered on him, it felt like it took an eternity to walk over the Sorting Hat. He had only a few seconds to skeptically wonder how an old hat knew best where he should be sorted, when the brim of the hat fell over his eyes and everything was tense, musty darkness.

Student after student went up to the Sorting Hat. They stood, clearly nervous, in front of the entire Great Hall and waited anxiously for the Sorting Hat to decide their fate. Too on edge to even speak to one another, Cassandra watched as some girls bit their nails and others played with their hair or robes. She took note of a particularly squirrelly boy who clung tightly to a taller girl with Slytherin robes and an unkind face. Must be an older sister, Cassie decided, pitying the obviously terrified boy.
Time went on and Cassandra grew more and more impatient by the second. I just want to know where I belong already! Swarms of students welcomed newcomers into their Houses. Some of them were gracious, and some struck with utter disappointment blatantly displayed on their faces. Distantly, Cassie wondered if her father was full of displeasure after being put into his house. Every person in their family - his parents, cousins, and late sister included - was placed in Gryffindor upon attending Hogwarts. Yet, he was put in Hufflepuff. He must have felt like such an outcast in his own home, she sympathetically assumed. She had been reassured multiple times that whatever House she was put in would become her father's new favorite house, but needless to say she was still apprehensive about the whole situation. She spent her waiting time mustering up as much courage as she could for the nerve-wrecking occasion.
Finally, after what felt like ages of waiting, her name was called. Cassie held her head high with a small smirk playing on her lips as she made her way to the stool with the tattered old hat on it. "Hello," she murmured to the ratty fabric as she placed it on her head. She sat up straight, placed her hands in her lap, and waited to be sorted at last. Whatever happens, she secretly decided, I'm going to be the most spirited witch my House has ever seen.

The professor in front of the Great Hall called students up to the Sorting Hat. Now Maddison had no clue what the sorting hat was. But the rest of the students on the train filled her in. They told her that before she would be placed into a Hogwarts house she would have to try on this special hat. Maddison didn't understand what a hat had to do with anything but she was too nervous to ask her usual 20 questions. Maddison was naturally an inquisitive person but when she got nervous sometimes her mouth got too dry to speak. She was able to ask what the houses of Hogwarts were, even her dry mouth couldn't curb her curiosity. The students told her that there were four houses, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Majority of the students agreed that the first three were the ones to hope for. Most of them thought that Slytherin was the worst place to go. But Maddison didn't understand why. She kind of stopped paying attention after they described Ravenclaw house. It seemed like the perfect place for Maddison.
Maddison was thinking about the train ride and Ravenclaw house as she was waiting in the Great Hall. You could hear a pin dropped it was so quiet in the hall. Not a single person was talking as the sorting took place. The students being called were too nervous to say anything and the rest of the hall were anticipating who would be joining them in their houses. Student after student was called up to the hat and sorted into one of the four houses. Maddison thought her name was never going to be called.
Finally after what seemed like forever she heard the professor summoning her up to the sorting hat. Maddison jumped a little and took a deep breath as she made her way to the stool in front of the hall. Looking around nervously she sat on the stool, she took a deep breath as the professor placed the hat on her head "This is it..." She thought to herself.

Arabelle stood with the rest of the students as each one of them was called up to have the Sorting Hat placed on her head. She looked around the Great Hall to see what all the fuss was about. It is just how I pictured it would be she thought to herself. She looked up towards the candles floating in mid air and she frowned. "Hm, now why can't Mum let me do that at home" she mumbled under her breath. She watched as the boy standing next to her got called up. He was extremely nervous and for the past ten minutes he had been picking at her robes. She went back to looking around the room and her eyes got caught on the windows as she tried to peer out to see what was beyond them. As normal she was not in the here and now.
She was so wrapped into her thoughts she did not even hear her name being called. The blond skinny girl next to her had to shove her gently. She looked at her and then looked to the stool. she walked up to the stool and sat down swinging her legs slowly. She was not too picky on which house she landed in. Just one where she could spend time reading. Her brother would love if she was in Ravenclaw like him. She did want to make him happy.
She felt the fabric of the hat go onto her head and she looked up at the rim of the hat away from the eyes of the room watching her. She began to nervously tap her fingers on the stool.

All around him, the other kids were practically bouncing off the walls with excitement. Many were whispering to each other nervously, or tapping their fingers or their feet, or just staring awestruck at their surroundings and at the hat that was allegedly supposed to determine their fate.
But Wyatt wasn't doing any of those things. He was barely paying attention at all. He was reading a book and ignoring everything that was going on around him. But that didn't mean he wasn't aware of it. Yes, he heard when the two boys nearby nudged each other and pointed to him, declaring him a "definite Ravenclaw." Whatever. It didn't matter. The truth was, it really didn't matter where he ended up... the houses were mostly arbitrary, anyway. Besides, he knew exactly where he wanted to be.
There were a lot of letters to get through before they finally got to T, so Wyatt just kept reading silently until at last he heard his name. Closing the book with a snap, he tucked it into his robes and walked up to the stood, stuffing the hat on his head. Let it be Slytherin, he thought to himself.
