Daniel shook his head sadly. "Keep fighting," he whispered to the young girl. "I'll meet you at St. Mungo's. I'm going to finish helping out around here. I should be at St. Mungo's in a little bit, but I'll make sure to help make sure you get out of here."
He got to his feet and looked around. This kind of thing wasn't supposed to happen, especially with so many young ones. "Come on, let's get her out of here as fast as we can."

Fenrir was almost ready to spring forward again, but as he did, he heard a familiar voice shouting unfamiliar words. The spell hit him hard and fell in his unbalanced position onto the floor. He could only see the grime of the alley they were in. He wailed in rage, although no sound really could be heard. He would be stuck like this until he was picked up and caged. Remus let out a sigh of relief as Greyback fell to the ground, unable to move. He ran over to Zander. "Are you OK? He would have killed you... I couldn't let it happen... not with everything else that's happening...." He was suddenly out of breath, as the magnitude of everything that was happening around him began to sink in. People were dying. Zander could have been one of them. The thought terrified him... he almost thought of Zander as a father, or at least a big brother. And he was closer to being family than his own father was... Zander understood what it was like to be a werewolf. His father never would understand that. Zander nodded. "I'm fine, Remus. Thank you. That fight with Greyback... It's been a long time coming, and it will probably happen again. But thanks for helping." He glanced around. The battle was still raging all around them; this part of town seemed to be getting the worst of it. "Come on, I'm taking you back to the school. You shouldn't be here. Pearl would never forgive me if I let anything happen to you." He took Remus by the hand and began to lead him back towards the school.

But Remus wouldn't move. "No... no, don't go that way. It's too far. There's a faster way, if we can get to Honeydukes. There's a secret passageway... we've been using it to get the injured out. The death eaters don't know about it. Follow me." He pulled Zander's hand in the opposite direction.

Zander hesitated just a moment, glancing over at Greyback's unconscious figure. Remus was right, going the long way back to school seemed very dangerous. He could see death eaters blocking the way, battling aurors.
"OK," he said. "But stay close to me. And keep your eyes open for any spells sent your way."

Remus nodded. "I will. You, too."
A part of him didn't really want to go back yet; he felt like he could do more. But the kids were mostly clearing out of Hogsmeade, and there were few people left besides death eaters and aurors. It was probably better to leave the aurors to do their jobs without having to worry about more kids getting hurt.

Zander ran down the street, holding Remus's hand. He kept his head low, but kept his eyes moving in search of any spells that might be headed their way. Though fires were raging all around them, the explosions seemed to have stopped, and most of the death eaters seemed to be concentrated in one area.
As they ran, however, Zander noticed a figure running toward them and he wasn't sure who it was and what side they were on, so he held up his wand and came to a stop.

Sirius ran through the ruined streets of Hogsmeade, desperately searching for Remus. Hardly any students were left in Hogsmeade, as far as he could see, and he was panicking at the thought of his friend being hurt somewhere... or worse. He needed to get Remus out of there.
Up ahead, he saw two figures, but he couldn't make them out. All he could tell for sure was that one was tall, and the other was short, probably a child. He ran a little faster, hoping tit was Remus.

Remus recognized Sirius first. Because of his sharp eyesight, he was able to recognize his friend at a great distance. When Zander came to a stop, Remus looked up at him curiously. It took him a moment to realize that Zander didn't know Sirius and was afraid that the person running towards them was threatening in some way.
"No, it's OK,' Remus said, tugging at Zander's arm. "It's my friend, Sirius."
He waved at Sirius then, letting him know that he was OK.

Zander relaxed immediately, but didn't put away his wand. There was too much going on, and he didn't want to take a chance of being unarmed. "OK, let's go to him, then," he said. There wasn't any point in just standing around waiting for the boy to come to them.

Sirius saw Remus wave at him and felt like a weight was being lifted from his shoulders. His friend was safe; everything was going to be OK. He waved back and waited for them to reach him.
Although he and Remus hadn't been speaking because of what had happened with Kris, he hoped to himself that this would change now. This whole horrible event had changed a lot of things, but maybe all of them didn't have to be for the worse.

Remus was thinking along the same lines. Sirius shouldn't have come back for him; but there he was. The incident with Kris had just been a mistake. Obviously Sirius hadn't meant to break his sister's heart. They were young... of course love wouldn't last forever. Not yet. Ultimately, she would be better off, because she could find someone else who could love only her.
As they finally reached the spot where Sirius was standing, Remus came to a stop. He hesitated only a second before letting go of Zander's hand and taking Sirius's in a quick handshake. "Thanks for coming back for me," he said. "I know I've been kind of a jerk lately, and I'm still mad about what happened with Kris... but you're still my best friend."

Sirius smiled. "Same to you," he said, shaking Remus's hand. "And I really am sorry about what I did to Kris. I really didn't mean it... but it doesn't really matter anymore. The important thing is, we have to get out of here. I saw a bunch of death eaters gathering in the middle of town, I think they're getting ready to either leave... or start a second wave. James and Peter and Lily have already gone back. Come on."

"I'll lead you," Zander said. "Come on, though, we really should hurry."
He took each of them by the hand and began to run back to Honeydukes as quickly as possible. Whatever was going to happen next, he wanted the children to be safe.

They reached the candy shop without incident. Not too far ahead, however, Remus could see Alice, Frank, Marlene, Kingsley, and Hestia all engaging in a battle with death eaters. It almost seemed like they were trying to keep the death eaters away from Honeydukes.
The candy shop had been damaged by explosions, but was still mostly intact. The passageway would be safe.
Remus turned to Zander. "OK, we're here. Thanks for helping. We'll be fine."
He gave Zander a quick hug. "Go home to Pearl. Make sure she's OK, and let her know that we're fine."

Zander nodded. "OK. You hurry up and get back. Be careful, and write to me in a couple of says, so I know you're definitely all right. I'll see you on the next full moon."
He lead the boys into Honeydukes, and waited while they went into the secret passageway.

Sirius had a lot of questions about who this guy was and why Remus seemed to know him so well, but he seemed nice enough. And he figured Remus would tell him more about the guy later. After all, the most important thing was to make sure that they made it out of town safely.
He had wanted to grab Alice and her friends and make them leave town as well, but he knew that they were all training to be aurors and were not likely to leave willingly. He just hoped they would be all right.
"Come on, Emmeline," he said to the girl, who was still waiting at the entrance of the passageway. "I think we should all clear out now."
They all stepped into the secret passageway and started on the long trek back to the school.

Dean had not been part of the attack. But he hadn't been helping, either. Rather, he had been skulking about in the shadows, observing the conflicts and destruction like a voyeur. When Zander had first confronted Greyback, Dean had not been far away. He was flattened against the side of a building, virtually unnoticeable in the midst of all the carnage.
He saw and heard it all, from the verbal attacks to the physical ones, all the way until Remus came and helped his pack leader with a well-timed stunning spell.
When Remus and Zander ran off to get out of Hogsmeade, Dean slipped out from his hiding spot and went over to Greyback. Long had he been curious about his pack leader's former alpha... now was the time for them to meet. After a quick examination, Dean used a levitation spell to lift the fallen werewolf off the ground and lead him away...

Jason didn't even notice that he had successfully disarmed the death eater, because all he heard was the killing curse. He reacted immediately. He ran towards her, jumping in front of her. "Justine--" he cried out, just before the curse struck him. He died even before he hit the ground. Justine was barely conscious, still recovering from the cruciatus curse, so she didn't understand what was happening right away. She heard the killing curse and Jason's voice calling out her name, but she just squeezed her eyes shut and waited for the killing curse to put an end to it all. Except that it didn't come. She waited a minute, trying to determine if she really was ded and just didn't know it yet. It was supposed to be painless, the killing curse, so maybe it had just happened so fast that she didn't feel the difference yet? But she still felt pain from the cruciatus curse. Surely if she were dead, she would not still feel pain. Slowly she opened her eyes, and was horrified by what she saw. Jason was lying flat on his back in front of her, his eyes staring blankly up at the smoke-filled sky. "No!" she cried. "It was supposed to be me!"

Marlene stood with Kingsley and Hestia in the street on one side of Honeydukes, battling back some death eaters who were trying to push forward and overtake the candy shop. Alice and Frank were on the other side of the street, forcing back death eaters on the other side. Apparently, some of them had started to figure out that Honeydukes was somehow important and now wanted to take it over. Marlene and the others had all decided that their job would be to defend the candy shop so that the escaping children could get out safely. But it was getting difficult, as the death eaters seemed to be increasing.
"Kingsley, look out!" she called, as a jet of red light whizzed over his head.

Meanwhile, Alice stood at the other end of the street in front of Honeydukes, with Frank at her side. So far they had been lucky... the death eaters they were battling didn't seem particularly interested in killing them... just getting them out of the way. They also didn't appear to be very good, because few of their spells had connected.
Unfortunately, their luck was about to change.
"Nice shot, Frank!" she congratulated him as one of the death eaters was blown backwards with a violent blasting spell.
