"Natalie." he caught up with her and he took a moment to catch his breath. "Natalie," he said again once he had air in his lungs, he took the moment to let his eyes adjust to the gloom "You didn't have to leave...I should be the one to leave, I didn't know you were going to be here too...I know I would of known if I had been talking to you but I thought I wasn't helping you, I ...I " he was stuck in a ramble. He didn't often suffer from verbal diarrhea, but he didn't expect to see her look so sad. He had begun to think he was a burden to her, but his departure from her company didn't improve her or even seem to help. He felt again heavy with a feeling of guilt over how he had treated her. "I'm sorry, I'll walk you back if you want." he flopped his arms at his sides and hoped she'd let him lead her out of this part of the school. He felt like a twisted rope, should he make another excuse and leave the party once he took her back? the decisions just weighed on him like noose around a condemned man.

"You know all the professors like to keep us waiting. They must find it entertaining." She could hear the annoyance in Charlotte's voice, but didn't mention it. It was clear, after seeing her and Sam the other night, that the two did not get on. She had yet to inquire as to why, and truth be told, she found that she didn't care too much.

"Patience is a virtue Char." Sam teased lightly. She shouldn'tve, it was a jab. But now she knew who had cursed her during dueling, and the gloves were off, the gauntlet tossed. If war was what Charlotte wanted, War was what Charlotte would get, and Samantha Montgomery did not lose wars.
"Although..." she said, shrugging once, " There are enough of us here that we should at least be treated to refreshments if we are to be kept waiting."

Charlotte bit her tongue. Hard. She wanted to slap that placating little smile straight off of Sam's face but she managed a smile of her own while her jaw clenched.
Play your games. Your politics. I wasn't ready for you before, but now you're mine.
"That's not a bad idea...I think I'll head to the kitchens..." she didn't know what might slip out of her mouth with the hate seething in her veins.

"I don't want to go back," she said quietly. "I don't fit in with those people; they're all smart or powerful or popular. I was only invited because my mum and sister were in the Slug Club. I heard them talk about it once. You earned your invitation by being good at potions. I'm only good at potions when you help me." She leaned against the wall and looked at him, her large green eyes looking very much like twin pools shining against the pale skin of her face. "Why did you think you weren't helping me? You're my only real friend, you know that. It's been lonely without you."

Severus's insides squirmed uncomfortably, but with a strange sort of pleasure. "I feel a lot...I thought I'd only drive you mad." he flushed blotching. He wanted to say he was lonely without her too, but he wasn't sure if he wanted her as a friend or a best friend or the way he saw Cissa with Lucius. he shook his head to loosen the stupid idea from his head. There would be no way Natalie would ever ever look that way at him. He sighed and wondered how else he could explain. "You're powerful, and smart and your dad is a professor and your Uncle is, where ever he is. I liked him more as a professor anyway...More than our new teacher. She's horrible." He was changing the subject, but he didn't want to say what he was thinking.

Sam saw opportunity and struck, "Oh Char...I'll accompany you." she intoned deceptively sweet.
Before Charlotte could even hint at refusing she made her small nods and bows and headed for the door grabbing Charlotte's arm along the way.
"We'll be right back." she told the rest of them who were waiting in the room.

Sam was up to something again but Lyra didn't say anything other than accepting her polite bow before leaving. Not knowing the girls' history she was unable to even guess what Sam had planned for Charlotte. She wasn't sure if she should feel bad for Char or not.
She turned to the rest of their group. "Well I guess that just leaves you boys and me," she purred at Rabastan and Rystain.

An objection had been on the tip of her tongue but somehow she had managed to get them into the hall. Charlotte pulled back once out of sight, "I can manage very well on my own Sam." she huffed.
"I'm sure you could" Sam replied icily, she circled the older girl with a cat like grace every menacing step clicking down Charlotte's spine.
"Thank you." she said hesitantly before trying to step out of the circle, damn Samantha she couldn't move her legs.
"What is this?" she asked angrily.

I don't mind your emotions, and I respect your wish for me not to go out of my way to read them. I'm trying harder to control it... if I don't, I may go mad. Classes are... difficult. So many people at once, all of them feeling something different... it helps to have something else to focus on." She looked away when he mentioned her uncle. They still hadn't heard from him, and it was as if he had vanished into thin air. "Thank you. I wish I had seen him teach. The new teacher is OK... but very unconventional. I'm having trouble keeping up with her."

Rabastan smiled at Lyra. She was a naturally sexy girl, he decided. She didn't have to try, which made it that much more attractive.
"Just the three of us," he agreed. "And while I do love the company... I am getting a little bored waiting for this meeting or such to occur."

"Looks like we'll just have to entertain ourselves." She smirked at the boys teasingly, but made no attempt at 'entertaining' them in any way. She too was tired of waiting and was a little irritated that she had rushed getting ready, thinking she was going to be late, only to wait for too long once here. She could have looked much more attractive if she new Slughorn would take this long to attend his own party.

In ten minutes Sam had returned, but Charlotte was no where to be found, behind her several trays of appetizers and drinks were trailing in on their own, and Samantha was looking a little pleased with herself but her eyes were lowered so not to give it away. "He show up yet?" she asked Lyra.

He shook his head again and said instead "He had classes, not sandboxes." he tried adding venom to the last part of the statement. he thought maybe she would stay on the subject of classes and not his feelings...for the most part he didn't like to really take them apart, that proved fruitless. "I did better in his classes than Professor Long's...The only reason I could make crates at all was because I was so mad that she had the nerve to think we are given everything." He frowned and thought briefly of home and the life he had there. he wished he could just tell her everything, but he felt guilty for thinking it and stuck his hands in his pockets. "I never meant ..." he didn't know if he could finish what he was saying, he just kept his stride even back more or less toward where they started.

Lyra was surprised at the short amount of time it had taken Sam and Charlotte to return. But then, no. Charlotte wasn't there. "No, he's still missing. And you seen to have lost someone as well. What have you done with Charlotte?"

"Why, I haven't done a thing to her. Surely." she said with mock indignation. There was a sparkle to her eye however that a keen observer would notice before she shrugged, " The girl had a headache and went to lay down, poor soul."

Lyra eyed Sam with friendly suspicion. Sam could be a little too proper at times, which made Lyra suspect she was hiding something. And she would have guessed that without Sam's slip of the tongue. "I didn't say you did anything to her. And I suppose if I were to go to the dormitory I would find her in one piece?" She let her mind run wild with theories of the sorts of things Sam could have done to make Charlotte disappear. It was almost funny.

"You would leave such a delightful party with such delightful guests..." she said glancing at Rabastan and Rystain then back at Lyra, "To go and seek the welfare of your classmate, why Lyra I do believe I underestimated your magnitude of caring. You are a genteel soul after all." she said batting her lush lashes a few times.

She shook her head and laughed. Sam was avoiding the question but she was doing it so well that Lyra dropped it. If Charlotte didn't come back by the end of the night, well then she would press Sam for real information. "You're so full of sh*t Sam," she giggled.

Sam gave her a dazzling innocent smile and then when no one was looking a sinister smirk but it wiped off her face so quickly it was questionable as to whether or not it really was there.
"So what have we been doing since I left or discussing?" she asked not wanting to cause much of a stir, but she did take a glass of whatever liquid it was being served and pressed it to her lips so she wouldn't have to speak as much.
