He had a few books he wanted to pick up that actually weren't in the school's library so instead of going all the way home to pick them up he was hoping the public library might be of more assistance.
Wandering down isles he knew exactly what he had come for, but a literary nerd at heart he didn't mind taking his time browsing.

It was a Hogsmeade weekend, and Adele had been coercered out of the castle. The last Hogsmeade weekend, she had opted not to come, and her dorm mates thought she needed to get out. They figured staying inside so much is what was making her so morose.
Instead of going to the joke shoppe, or any of the restaurants, however, she found herself in the library. She was just perusing, not really on any kind of a mission other than taking in the titles, and she was content to do it. The quiet was nice, and the library was bigger than the one at school. She simply made her way up and down the isles slowly.

He saw her through the shelves and almost laughed, the odds were fair enough, he thought, that he would see her there, but it was still ironic. He didn't know what glee was nipping at him to disturb her, and he wished that urge would tamp itself down, but it wouldn't, he had to throw her off. It would be fun.
"Researching for your number's essay Miss Graham?"

She started when his voice interrupted her thoughts and looked at him. "Mr. Renneau," she said, her voice light. It felt strange calling someone so young Mr, but that's what autority figures earned, so she used it.
"Actually, I've already finished your essay," she said, keeping her attention on the books in front of her.

"Have you?" he inquired with a light smile, "So all this research is for another class? I think I may be wounded." he said placing a hand over his heart. He leaned back to study her, putting his hands in his pockets before giving her a devil may care grin, " Nothing more fascinating to a Ravenclaw than books?"

"Suppose not," she said with an apathetic shrug. It didn't occur to her that she was being cold, or hard to talk to. It was just how she dealt with things. It was easier to say goodbye if you never got attached.
"I'm not doing research for anything, really," she added, feeling like he should know she was on top of all of her schoolwork.

It certainly did occur to Caleb, and yet he couldn't force his feet away from talking to her. He honestly didn't know why he was fascinated with this student, or why he was constantly trying to get her to smile.
He paused in his breathing, was that what he was doing? Was that why he was being such a...well why he was behaving oddly? Sam would laugh at him and be bewildered by it. What happened to her cool older brother who never had time for anything but his studies, well and his family of course. He couldn't place it.
" Should I let you get back to it then?" he asked, his voice was soft as if he was just realizing then that he could be bothering her and since he didn't know why he was bothing her, that bit embarassed him.

"Get back to what?" She asked, her mind still only half on the conversation. She finally looked up, giving him her undivided attention. He was a teacher, and he was trying to talk to her. She should listen.
"I'm sorry," she said, meeting his eyes. "I'm listening."

"Whatever it is that you're up to. Studying no doubt. " he gave her a small bow, "It was my pleasure talking to you Miss Graham."
He had bugged her enough he thought, poor thing, he smiled to himself it was fun teasing her, he didn't know why.

She gave him a look, feeling badly. "Wait, I'm sorry," she said. "I was distracted. Was there something you wanted to speak to me about?" She asked.
It would't do to get on the badside of a teacher, she realized, and besides... would it kill her to be nice to someone? It wasn't that she was ever mean, she just had a hard time letting people see this.

"Nothing in particular." he assured her but settled back where he was, it was interesting for her to be the pursuer in their conversation, " Just making small talk." he gathered she wasn't used to that, well not anymore. Something in her eyes said tragedy, or perhaps it was when he saw her at the graveyard, he didn't know, what he did know was he liked her, and he wanted to see her smile, so he stayed where he was and asked, "Are you looking for anything in particular?"

Adele shrugged. Yes, she was looking for something very particular, but she wasn't about to tell him.
Then, an idea struck her.
"Can you tell anything about a person's death by their name?" She asked, uncaring of how morbid that sounded, even to her own ears.

He straightened, "You mean with Arithmancy?" he asked, there were those who believed you could find out when you were set to die and how by your name and your numbers and the other numbers of things that surrounded you. Caleb had tried, often just after his father had died, he needed a reason, and he needed to know when the others in his family would die, if it was safe to get attatched, but he came to one answer and one answer only, Fate will be what Fate is death is inevitable.

Adele paused, but nodded slowly. "Yes. With Arithmancy," she affirmed.
She had lost two brothers and two parents... she just wanted to know why. And maybe she wanted to know when her last brother would abandon her... or even if the family curse spread to her as well. How would she handle knowing when she was going to die? Did she really want to know?

If only she knew that Caleb could relate, quite personally, on those same levels, " Nothing that would help." he said almost as if he knew what she was looking for, "Death is a mystery even to the numbers." it was unfortunate but it was true and he worried more and more for the things he loved, as they got closer to him he knew it would be that much harder to let them go.

She frowned. "Even for someone who is already dead?" She asked, and it become appearant rather quickly how badly she needed absolution for her family's deaths. "You can't find out why?"
She was interested, maybe too much so.
When the dead are done with the living, her older bother had once told her, the living can get back to life. Her fear was that they had all moved on already, and shewas the one still holding on.

At that moment he wanted nothing more than to soothe away the frown that marred her face, he wanted to go out and find her answers, he wanted to give her that absolution even though he didn't know that was what she was looking for, he just wanted to help her. " People die when it's there time...we never know the whens beforehand, and we never learn the whys afterwards...we can only count on their watching over us and wanting us to live."

"Yeah," she said softly. "That's what everyone says."
She felt extremely let down. She didn't know why she had expected him to be able to help her, but she was somewhat heartbroken that he couldn't. It was a strange feeling, to have counted on him for even that briefest of moments, but it was gone now, and she could move on. "Well, thanks anyway."

"And it's extremely annoying isn't it?" he asked seriously, " When you want to understand why someone was ripped out of your life, what possible purpose could it serve? And you wonder how long you have with the rest of your loved ones, you don't know who to get close to because you don't know how long that person has, or how long you have yourself. Believe me Adele..." it was the first time he said her name and it almost felt...nice...strange...but nice, " ...we all want answers, all that other stuff that people say...it's just something that we have to tell ourselves...because a life spent searching for the answer to tragedies...is no life at all."

She looked up again, startled at how well he seemed to figure her out, and she immidiately didn't like it.
"My brother once told me everyone can know everything Fate knows. And more that that. He said we all not only could know everything. We do. We just tell ourselves we don't to make it all bearable. Do you think that's true? That maybe that's why any form of divination works, because we already have the knowledge within us?"
