He shrugged, "Maybe you needed to tell *someone* and I was just the closest person." he lied for her, " If it isn't you, who do you think it would be?" he asked still softly not wanting to upset the moment anymore.

"My brother," she said. And by admitting it... she knew, without a doubt, that death was coming for one of them. "My last brother."
She couldn't attend any more funerals. At this point, she wished it were her time.

He knew that he wouldn't let it be her, but he wondered if her last brother were gone how well she would be able to handle it. If she would be able to handle it. And who would take care of her if she didn't have any family left?
"How did...I'm sorry..." he wanted to know how her other brothers died, " Why do you think Death is coming for him...why did your other family members..." he didn't know how to ask without straight out asking.

She rolled her eyes. "My father died two days after I was born of unknown causes. My mother died of the flu. Brian was killed by a werewolf. Jesse and Cale were both killed by Death Eaters. So is there a pattern? No. How do I know...?" Well, she didn't have proof. "Because I feel the same way right now that I did four times before."

Well so there was no pattern he wish there was so he could prevent death from hurting her yet again. Still he didn't know, " I'm sorry." he said again, hearing about their deaths. " I don't know why things ...happen the way they do. I wish I could give you answers from the numbers...I wish I could give you...peace."

Not really ready to let her leave he chewed on his inner lip, "May I walk you back to the castle." then he smiled rakishly, "I promise I'm not a stalker or anything." he teased, then sobered, " We don't have to talk about this anymore either, I'd just like to walk with you."

She sighed, looking at him. She just wanted to be alone, but she doubted he was going to give that solitude to her until they were back at the castle.
So she nodded, finally. "All right," she said, giving in quicker than she ever had before. She was just too tired and didn't have the energy to fight him.

They didn't really have to talk Caleb was realizing as he smiled and asked if he could carry anything of hers. He just wanted to be around her, and now that he was worried for her safety he wanted to be the one who got to protect her, he didn't know if he trusted anyone else to do the job adequately. Besides *he* was the one who promised she'd be safe, even if that was an internal promise, he did promise that he wouldn't let her down, and that he just could not do.
