Athena walked around the living room of Alastor's house. The whole place had been completely trashed. Furniture was upended and ripped apart, a table had been shattered to pieces, and a terrible symbol was scrawled on the wall by the stairs. The Dark Mark.
Death Eaters had been here. But who? And more importantly, why? Would they come back?
Athena walked up to the Dark Mark and touched the dripping red liquid that had been used to draw the symbol. Immediately, she could see the worst was true... it was blood.
"Oh, Merlin...." she breathed. She abruptly ran upstairs, searching for any sign of anyone who might be still alive. She searched Alastor's room first. But the bed was empty. All of the other rooms were empty as well. There was no sign of anyone... there weren't even any bodies.
Running back downstairs again, she checked all of the other rooms, and again found nothing but more shattered pieces of their belongings.
Finally, she walked back into the living room and stood in the rubble, trying to figure out what to do.
Then, suddenly, she dropped to her knees and began to scream.

Coda froze when her new mother screamed, she didn't know what to do. She wanted to go to her but she had been told to stay where she was. She looked around for someone she knew but when she saw no one she slowly went into the doorway. Once she saw her mother on the floor she ran to her, there were so many scents it was hard for her to breath. "M-mommy?" She whispered, scared and worried.

Athena choked back a sob that was building in her throat. The important thing now was to be strong for Coda. She would have to call in the aurors to investigate the attack and find out what had happened, as well as to arrange protection for them, but for now, all she could think of was to hold on to her adopted daughter. She put her arms around the girl and held her tight. "It's OK," she said, knowing it was a lie. "Everything is going to be OK, I promise..."

Coda looked around and saw the mess, she wondered if her dad was OK. "C-can we go outside? There is too many scents I can barely breath." She had a bad feeling that her daddy was gone.

Athena nodded numbly. "Yeah, sweetie, let's go outside. I... I don't want to be in here anymore." She slowly got to her feet, realizing that her legs were shaking wildly. She could barely even stand. "Can... can you smell Alastor? or any other scents you recognize? Or are there too many smells to be able to tell them apart?"

"I-I've been trying but there's too many..." Coda held her mother's hand then lead her outside. Once outside she took a deep breath, she looked down at the ground and asked very quietly, "D-do you think he's OK?" She hoped he was, he had been the first human she had met and trusted.

Athena had a terrible feeling that he was not fine, but she didn't want to say that to Coda. "Well... he's not here. That could be a good thing, though... it could just mean that whoever did this just wanted him for some reason.... I just don't know. I don't know if Wesley or Natalie or Nicky or Colin are OK, or if they're with him... I just don't know..."

"Where do you think Nicky and them are?" Coda asked as she started to get a sinking feeling. She wasn't sure how to feel at the moment, she put her arms around her mom and clung to her.

"I don't know," Athena said honestly. The truth was, she didn't even want to know. Unless they were safe and they walked up to the house at any second, she could be reasonably certain that the situation was not good. The only hope she had left was the fact that there were no bodies inside. So at least, they'd left here alive...
She wiped the tears from her face and looked at Coda. "I'm going to need to call for some help, sweetie. They'll be good people... they won't hurt you. Will you be all right? You won't be afraid of them, will you?"

"If you don't leave me alone with them then I will be ok." Coda said still clinging to her. "I don't want to be alone or with people I don't know."

"I won't leave you," Athena promised, hugging the girl fiercely. "I don't want you out of my sight, not even for a second. Not after what's happened... I won't lose you, too."
She sighed heavily and prepared to send a patronus to the school with a message for Dumbledore. He would know who to contact to get some aurors here.

Wesley, walking toward the house with Natalie, Nicky and Colin, had heard the screams from two blocks away, but didn't know where they were coming from. As a result, he walked along at a rather leisurely pace, unaware of what awaited him.
Finally, as he approached the house, he saw Athena kneeling in the front yard with Coda by her side. The door was standing wide open, and as he peered inside, he could see that the house had been ransacked. "Good lord!" he gasped as he approached. "What happened? It looks like a tornado touched down inside."

Athena, on hearing his voice, got up and ran to him, throwing her arms around him. "Wesley!" she cried, "You're alive!" She looked around and noticed Natalie and the two boys, and she let out another gasp. "Oh, my boys, you're alive!" she sobbed, scooping up the two boys in her arms. "But where is Alastor?"

Athena shook her head grimly. "No, I have no idea," she replied. "All I know is, the place is a mess and there's no trace of anyone left inside. I thought everyone was gone until I saw you. I was just about to send a message to Dumbledore to contact the Order..."

Wesley nodded. "Yes, you should definitely do that," he said. "Dumbledore should know, and there will need to be an investigation done." He looked at Natalie. "Can you tell what happened? Are you sensing anything?"

Natalie had been watching silently, her heart gripped with fear. Usually, when something like this happened, she would get a vision, or she'd sense it before it happened. But after Sabrina's death, she had stopped touching people, which cut down the number of visions she had. Would she have been able to stop this if she'd seen a vision of it first? Or was it destined to happen? Things in her visions didn't always happen as they were supposed to... She had seen her father die, but instead she saw him faking his death. She had seen Sabrina die, killed by Craven, but instead she was killed by Greta Weiss. There were so many things about her visions that she didn't understand.
"I.... I can't see anything," she said quietly. "Maybe if I go inside, I can see what happened..."

Athena was still shaking with fear. Still carrying Nicky, she walked back to Coda and held onto her, while Colin held onto her other side. She needed to be with the children now, to give them strength and to find comfort with them.
"I'm sure he's fine," she told Coda in what she hoped was a positive tone. "He probably got out, just like the others..."

Coda clung to her mother trying to keep her panic away, she felt that something really bad happened to her dad. She was scared that she might not see him again, she had been happy and had a family but now things were going wrong.

Athena fought back her tears as she huddled closer to the children. It wasn't fair... her boys had lost their father for the second time, and Coda was losing the only father she had ever known before she ever even had a chance to know what that meant. She silently cursed the people who had done this. A part of her wanted to swear vengeance on them, to hunt them down and make them pay. But she knew better. The children may have lost their father, but she wasn't going to put them in a position to make them orphans. Coda, especially, needed her.
She wished there was something she could say to them, to make things easier or less frightening. But what could she say? "If there's even a chance that he's out there somewhere, I swear we'll find him," she said softly to Coda. "And I swear to you, I won't leave you."
