Sirius shook his head. "OK, let me get this straight," he said. "You want me to be your friend, but you're going to force me to do it by blackmailing me? Is that really the way you want to start off a friendship?"

"I'm not forcing you to do anything," replied Peter. "If I wanted to force you into doing something, I'd curse you into doing it. It's actually your choice if you want to be my friend or not. Let's just say, the information I know is just leverage. Besides, if I didn't have leverage, you wouldn't even think twice about being friends with me, would you?" He narrowed his eyes. "Because every time I tried to talk to you or the others, you all have something better to do than waste your time talking to a nobody!"

Sirius sighed and looked at Peter again. "OK," he said at last. "You don't tell Kris or Remus about me and Amy, and you can hang out with me. I'll tell the other guys that you're cool. But I need you to do something else right now, because it's really important. I think Kris has been kidnapped, and I need to try and find her. Will you help me?"

Peter felt a smile spread across his face. "Deal," he said. "Not a word will be uttered from my lips about it." He felt his smile fade. "Kidnapped? Yeah, yeah, sure. What are friends for, right?" Peter thought for a moment. No wonder Kris wasn't any where to be seen. Right now, he forgot about the blackmail issue going on. If he was going to really be friends with Sirius and the others, he had to start acting like it. Finding Kris would be a great way to get on the right foot. "Who do you think took her?"

Sirius relaxed slightly, glad now that he had Peter on his side. Even if they were starting off the wrong way, maybe Peter would turn out to be a good guy to have around. "It was her adopted mother, I think," he said. "She raised Kris until.... well, until now, I guess. Kris was supposed to tell her that she wanted to stay with Remus and their father... I guess the lady just lost it or something. She didn't really look all that stable." He sighed and looked around. "That lady over there said that she took Kris out of here kicking and screaming and calling for me, while I was...." he trailed off guiltily. "Well, you know what I was doing. I'm a real jerk, aren't I? You sure you actually want to be friends with me?"

Peter shook his head. "I wouldn't have brought any of that up if I didn't want to be friends with you, would I? Stop questioning things like that. You already know the answer to most of those questions. Anyway. Where would that lady take her? Any ideas?" Great. Peter was now going to be friends with Sirius, and the first thing they do together is try to find a crazy lady? Wow. This was something he thought he would never do, ever. However, if it got Sirius and the others to see he wasn't that bad of a guy, and he was good enough to be a part of them, then he would do it.

Sirius sighed. "I know... I just... I feel like such a jerk, I'm not sure why anyone would want to talk to me at all right now. I was just off with another girl while my girlfriend was calling out for me to help her. Does that sound like a great guy?" He shook his head. "Never mind... We need to concentrate on finding Kris. I have no idea where the woman would take her... She lives in America, and if I remember right, she's a muggle or something. So where can she go?" He was furious with himself for not getting more details from Kris about the woman who raised her. He didn't even think he knew her name!

Peter had no idea what to do. His mind needed to get in gear so that he could possibly think of something! But what? "She could end up in a lot of places. However, if I were her, I would take my kidnapped daughter to somewhere that not a lot of people stayed. But, there's a lot of places like that in the world. She could be on her way back to America for all we know. Although, if she is a muggle, she couldn't have gone too far, so that sort of knocks out her just jumping the country. Where is there a place were not a lot of people go?"

Sirius wrung his hands worriedly. "I don't know. They could be just about anywhere. But she can't really get very far if she doesn't have magic, right? She could maybe take the Knight Bus, though... in which case, they could be just about anywhere. But let's assume that they didn't... where could they go? Hey! Maybe the Shrieking Shack?"

"True, she could take the Knight Bus. Although, where would she go?" Peter tried to think of all the places she could be, but he was really drawing a blank. "Er, the Shrieking Shack? I guess that's a start. Although, I'm not really sure why she would hide there. It's haunted, but it's a good start. We can always check there." Of course, something like this would happen when Peter was around. It seemed like something bad when he was around. Bad Luck Peter. That's what he should be called, however, maybe now, his luck would start to go up. Maybe now, he would have good luck, since he was going to hanging out with the 'cool kids'.

Sirius sighed. "You're right... how would she get in there? I guess it doesn't make any sense... but I don't know where else they would go." He sighed. "You know what? I think we'd better just try to get some help. Why don't we go find James and Robin? And... maybe we should find Remus, too..." he added, although the thought worried him. What was he going to tell Remus when he asked how Kris was kidnapped, when she was supposed to be out with him?

"Um. Okay. If you think so," said Peter. "Although, what are you going to do about Remus? You know he's going to ask something about it. Why not go with the story of you had to go to the bathroom and then you ran into me. We talked for a moment, and then when we both returned to the front of the place, she was gone? You don't want him to kill you, I assume. Maybe he'd believe it. If you want, I can help back you up, that way, it would be a little bit more believable."

Sirius sighed. Peter's suggestion was perfectly reasonable. It sounded believable enough. But he hated the idea of lying to Remus. Of course, he had no choice. He couldn't very well tell him the truth. Not if he wanted to stay friends with Remus. "Yeah, I guess that'll work," he said to Peter. He had to admit, the kid was coming in handy, after all. "Come on, let's go."

Peter followed Sirius out of the Three Broomsticks happily. Now, he wouldn't be shot down from trying to become friends with Sirius, Remus, and James. Even though the others maybe sort of iffy about Peter being around, Sirius would be there to 'talk him up' to the others. After all, he did have leverage. "Where were would be others be? Maybe Zonko's? Or the candy store?" It didn't really matter what they did now. He was going to be accepted, and what's better than that?

"Yeah, let's try Zonko's first," said Sirius. He was pretty sure he'd find James there, but he didn't think Remus and Lily would be there. Somehow, Lily didn't seem like the Zonko's type. Sirius sighed as he walked toward Zonko's with Peter. He had really messed this one up. He'd promised Kris a fun day in Hogsmeade, and instead, he'd wound up kissing another girl while she was being kidnapped. Maybe he was starting to live up to the Black family name, after all.
"Thanks for your help, Peter," he said, turning to look at the boy. He was so grateful to have anyone on his side now--especially since he didn't deserve it--that he was willing to overlook the way Peter had approached it. If he could help find Kris, then maybe it was worth it.

"No, no. Don't thank me. I should be the one thanking you," replied Peter. "You're actually giving me a decent chance." He didn't really care what Sirius did. Sirius could go kill someone for whatever reason, and Peter would still be there. After all, he worked hard to have this chance and he was going to prove that he could be 'cool', and he always wanted to be friends with Sirius and the others, so why let something like this stop him?
Peter followed Sirius out of The Three Broomsticks and started walking in the direction of Zonko's. "Okay, you know that James will probably ask where would they have gone. So. I know that we have no idea, but let's narrow some things down. The woman that raised Kris is a muggle, so she couldn't have really gone far. Where are places around here that aren't too far away?"

Sirius sighed and rubbed his head tiredly. "I don't know... I guess we could check the Hog's Head... and there are supposed to be a few abandoned cabins in the woods near here, but other than that, I don't know where else she could be. If she took the Knight Bus, she could be just about anywhere by now. Can Muggles take the Knight Bus?"

Peter scratched his head for a moment in thought. "Er, I don't think they can. The only way to get on the Knight Bus is if you have a wand. Hence why muggles are never able to just board on the bus any given time of the day," he said. "We know that she couldn't have just skipped the country. Kris couldn't apparate, and that woman sure couldn't since she was a muggle. She has to be around here somewhere. Plus, she knows that once people know Kris is gone, they will look for her. We just have to think like some crazed person that wants to kidnap a kid that thinks that the kid is theirs."

Sirius frowned. "She could be anywhere. By the time I was able to pull myself away from Amy, she was completely gone. She wouldn't be hiding in a store, that would just be stupid. here were too many witnesses in the Three Broomsticks, so she couldn't hide there. She could have gone to the Hog's head, I suppose..." he said almost desperately. "This is all my fault... I was in there kissing Amy when I should have been watching out for Kris..."

"Sirius. Just take a deep breath. We'll find Kris. I promise," said Peter. Right now, Peter had to play the good guy card. "She's probably not that far away. Just stop thinking about Amy right now, and focus on what we have to do. Thinking about her is not going to help us any." He didn't know what it was like to be in the situation Sirius was in. Hell, he never even had a girl that would give him the time of day, and Sirius had two! "We've just got to think and you blaming yourself is not going to get us anywhere. Come on, we've just got to start looking let's go. We can scan the Hog's Head, if she's not there then the other places that she could have went is probably Diagon Alley. I mean, how many places could she have traveled that fast?"
