"You said that Lucie believed that it was Laitia who kidnapped Elle from the Quidditch Pitch. Do you have any evidence to support this claim?" Dumbledore continued.

Sabrina was confused. "Um... well, no... I mean, Lucie talked to her when she was in the hospital wing and I think she admitted it there..."

"But you were not there when this happened, correct?" Dumbledore said.

Sabrina frowned. "Well, no, but..."

"OK," Dumbledore said abruptly. "No further questions. Sabrina, you are dismissed. Mr. Corrigan, who is your next witness, please?"

Sabrina stepped down slowly, feeling a bit like she'd been it by a train. Now she was worried about Elle... she clearly hadn't helped her cousin at all. She sighed heavily and slipped out into the hall. Maybe she could find Natalie...

Elle smiled at Sabrina, at least she was standing up for her unlike the jerks opposite her.

Vincent smiled at Sabrina as she stepped down. Wheeling forward, he addressed the court. "My next witness is outside, let me just go call her in," he said. He wheeled over to the door and peaked out, waving someone in. "For my next witness, I'd like to call Poppy Pomfrey."

Madam Pomfrey walked in slowly, hearing the surprised gasps as she did. She approached the front and sat on the little chair on the other side of Elle.

Vincent continued to look at the members of the Wizengamot. "I'm sure most everyone here will be familiar with Madam Pomfrey. She is the school nurse at Hogwarts and has been for quite a few years already. Now, I called her here today because she worked extensively with both Elle Wright and with Laitia Kirak. Is that correct, Madam Pomfrey?"

"Yes, that is correct," Poppy said. "I looked after Elle twice, once after she was returned by the kidnapper, and once after she stabbed Ms. Kirak. Both of them were brought to me after the stabbing."

"OK," said Vincent. "Now, tell me, please, when Elle was brought in after the kidnapping, how would you describe her condition? Do you think she was in her right mind?"

Madam Pomfrey cleared her throat. "When they brought her in, she was wild. She was terrified of... something, but she couldn't say what. She couldn't even remember her own name. She couldn't hold a thought together and she laughed at inappropriate moments for no reason. It was as if part of her mind was gone."

"So, in a way, it was almost like she was crazy," Vincent said. "Would you say that was an accurate description? Do you know what could have caused this change in her?"

"I wouldn't say crazy, exactly," said Madam Pomfrey. "More like--as the Muggles would say--'the lights were on but nobody was home.' Sorry, dear, but it's true," she added, looking apologetically at Elle. "It was definitely the work of an overly powerful memory charm. When a memory charm is done properly, it should remove only specific memories. When it is overdone, it can cause a person to regress back to a completely blank slate. I wouldn't say this was entirely the case here, but I do believe that Elle lost a great deal of her memory and personality, as well as her sense of what is right and wrong."

"Her sense of right and wrong?" Vincent repeated. "We'll come back to that. But for now, I want to know, is there any kind of treatment that can be done for someone in this case?"

"There is a treatment, but it's not quick and it's not easy. It's also not completely effective. It involves the use of a potion which makes the brain more absorbant to information. This potion helps speed the relearning process, so that the memory lost can be regained. But it's a slow process and depending on the amount of damage done, it could take years to regain everything that was lost. Miss Wright lost a substantial amount of information, and even now, I would not say that she is completely well."

"OK," Vincent said. "Now, tell me, in your opinion, how much had she improved by the time she was released from the hospital wing to go to the Halloween Ball?"

Voltaire perked up at this bit of information, he wondered about this potion, could it be applied in any case of memory loss? His stomach did a half twist at the thought, it was something eventually he'd have to approach.
*but sadly he forgot*

Poppy sighed. "Not as much as I would have liked. She was still a bit fuzzy and scattered, and I actually didn't want her to leave yet. She begged to go to the ball, and her sister swore she would look out for her, so I allowed it."
