Everything had worked out with Julian in the end, possibly better than she had been expecting. Julian had opened up to her and they ended a very turbulent evening with cuddling and a movie. Julian even spent the night, though they only held each other in the dark. As far as non-dates go it was possibly one of their better ones. That said something for the history of their relationship.
But Julian had said something that Lyra couldn't get out of her head and as she thought about it she grew unreasonably angry. She marched herself to Montgomery Manor, knowing Nicolas would be there today and waited impatiently to be welcomed in.
The second she saw Nicolas she began yelling. "How could you not tell me?! What is wrong with you! You didn't think I might not need to know?! You bloody wanker!"

"Oh look. She's yelling at me. It must be a day that ends in y." he said nonplussed not looking up from his newspaper.
"Not that I care too terribly about whatever tantrum you're having, but it might be more productive if you actually told me what imagined slight has you in a pique today."

Lyra was enraged by his nonchalance on the matter, despite him not knowing what the matter was. She stormed over to stand in front of him and when he still didn't look up at her she ripped the newspaper from his hands.
"I should have known! You should have told me! You're an unbelievable ass!" When that didn't clear anything up she shouted "Julian!"

His newspaper torn from his hands and the angry imp standing before him told him that this was no ordinary spat. Lyra was truly angry, and to Nik's knowledge there was no discernible reason for it.
He gave her is attention finally, "You're still not making yourself clear darling. What is it exactly that I should have told you?"
While she had his attention, she had yet to get a rise out of him as he was now familiar with her moods. He remained deliberately cool headed, mostly because he knew it pissed her off.

And it did. How could he be calm when Julian was hurting so much?
"He showed me the scars!" she screamed, her anger growing with every second that Nicolas remained unperturbed.

Nik didn't respond at first, as he muddled through what she was saying. It dawned on him that Julian must have told her about his suicide attempt. Nik had been the one to find him, and to save his life, and Lyra was angry that Nik hadn't told her.
The flicker of realization was replaced by indignant fury as he summoned the newspaper back from her and returned to his article without responding to her anger.

Lyra was angry that Nik hadn't warned her. And she told him such. "You knew how I was feeling," she carried on with or without his undivided attention. "You knew I didn't care if I lived or not, yet you didn't think it might be important to mention just how detrimental that would be to Julian?"
He still wasn't looking at her. "What is wrong with you! You should care about your friend!"

"For you to question the level of care I have for any of my friends is highly ironic." considering he had given her hell for so long at being an unknown risk.
"What part of our entire acquaintance would make you doubt such a thing? As for being angry that I didn't tell you one of my best friends deepest darkest secrets, that's just absurd. I didn't even tell Sam about that. "

"Sam isn't sleeping with him," she hissed. "And Sam's not the one scarring herself to escape this cruel world."
Screaming wasn't working. It never worked with him but he always seemed to rile her up to that point so quickly. It was infuriating.
"You should have said something. I don't know what, but that giant head of yours has to be full of something other than sh*t, you could have figured it out.

"It wasn't for me to say anything Lyra. I yelled at you plenty when you made it clear you were dating him again. Maybe now you won't give me such a hard time when I tell you to do something and just trust that I have my reasons." he said with exasperation.
They all had their demons. Sam didn't cut, but she had her own escapes, so did Nik. They were all screwed up in one way or another.

Lyra nearly snorted with contempt. "The day I listen to you without question is the day Hell freezes over."
"Nik, I should have had some kind of warning before I tried to end it with him."

"I repeat, what exactly did you want me to say? End things now because your careless disregard for your life is terrifying to the man who already watched the first love of his life die? Was that not warning or reason enough that he would struggle with what you were doing?" he looked at her finally the same incredulous expression on his face.

"I don't know. It should have come sooner or...I don't know, alright? I don't know what you could have said! I don't know but Julian was hurting so bad that he tried to kill himself and that's not okay, Nicolas!"
Lyra was scared. She didn't want to imagine a world where, not only was Julian not with her, but a world that he wasn't on at all. One where she had never met him. That thought scared Lyra and she needed to lash out at someone. That someone was Nicolas.

Nik sighed as Lyra's sense returned to her and her argument dwindled.
"It happened long before he met you." he reassured her, "And if anything you being in his life, it's probably the first thing to come along and make him truly happy I got there in time."

"That makes it even worse," she whined as she fell into a chair across from him. "How am I supposed to be responsible for his entire happiness when I can't go a week without trying the same thing he had? What if I mess up, I'll never forgive myself if he tries it again!"

Why did she always come to him with her worries? Didn't she have a shrink for these sort of things now? He was terrible at soothing her, more often than not he was the one to ruffle her feathers to begin with.
Still he tried to reassure her again, "He's not that man anymore. He hasn't been for a long time. And I don't think he's asking you to be responsible for his entire happiness. I think he's worried about being yours. He's been where you've been Lyra. He's conquered it, and so can you. You can both be happy, you just have to give yourselves time."

Lyra wasn't sure why she sought out Nicolas to be the sounding board for all of her life's problems. Sam had made it clear she was open to the position and yet again Lyra was pestering Nik. Dr Nadeer had commented on her preference for male friends over female ones, but Lyra had assumed it was based purely on an ability to manipulate them through sex. And she definitely did not have any sexual desires for Nik.
But then again, she didn't think of Nik as a friend. He was an annoyance and the cause of many of her problems. She was simply stuck with him as he was part of the package deal that came with Sam and Julian. At least that's what she insisted to herself.
She groaned at his support. "The things you say make so much sense and yet they sound completely moronic coming from your mouth."

"Well excuse me!" he huffed picking his paper back up and crossing his legs out in front of him, once again ignoring her.
They certainly had an adversarial relationship, one that he took responsibility for in the past, but he had made up for his initial slights long ago, and he had continued to prove himself a good friend to her. She couldn't get past it, whatever it was, and today he simply didn't feel like being her punching bag.

Lyra smiled as he huffed at her. She enjoyed getting a rise out of him. But the seconds pressed on and he didn't respond in kind as he normally would. That annoyed her.
"Fine! Sit behind your stupid paper and ignore me. I didn't want to talk to you anyway" she said as she crossed her legs and folded her arms across her chest. "Sam's at school, Julian is painting. I've got all day to myself, I certainly don't need to spend it here with you!" But Lyra didn't move.

Sometimes he wanted to strangle her.
"You really are a pain in the arse." he said with a deep sigh throwing the paper down clearly conceding.
He stood up and began to leave the room, but paused and looked back at her "Well come along then."
