Diana was tired, but for the first time in a while she was also content. She stretched feeling the delicious satisfaction of a body well taken care of. They had taken the last week slow in wake of her news.
Since they also didn't know where Copperbottom was, or the mysterious Board member, or the mysterious assassin, there wasn't much by way of planning an attack. Instead they had the time to recuperate, and Diana thought that maybe, just maybe, they might make it after all.
Christian had been adamant about Hanley visiting more often to check on both Diana and the baby and she had conceded to a visit today.
He also understood why she was napping and eating so much, but they hadn't really talked about how they felt. Diana was determined to start the conversation yet again.

Christian wasn't necessarily conflicted about the news of his unborn child, but rather he was still in a stage of shock. He had been more forgiving of Diana's behaviors that had frustrated him so much in the weeks prior. He didn't bother her to wake up when she took a nap for the fourth time in the same day, and he no longer offered her liquor as an apology for his temper.
He looked at her as she stretched, his eyes drifting toward her stomach which housed his son or daughter. She didn't look pregnant yet. There may have been a small part of him that believed she was mistaken. They would find out when Hanley arrived. Until then Christian watched her, his mind reeling with the decisions that needed to be made.

"Stop staring at me." she said knowingly her eyes still closed. She peaked at him, "It freaks me out." she teased.
She turned on her side and opened her eyes fully to look at him, "What are you doing?"

"You could turn over and I'll stare at your arse, if that would make you more comfortable. But I'm staring either way."
"I'm bloody thinking, what do you think I'm doing?" he said with a smirk. He leaned over and kissed her before sitting up on the edge of the bed, preparing himself for another day as someone's soon-to-be father.

She sat up as well, but instead of standing she put her arms around him from behind and kissed the glorious expanse of muscle that spread across his back. She was feeling affectionate. Silly hormones.
"What are you thinking about?"

Christian was thinking about whether he wanted to be a father to an infant, and more importantly whether he actually could. He was thinking how they were going to take care of this Board problem while bonded and pregnant. There were also thoughts of how to find their Mystery Board Member in the first place and their need to figure out just what the hell the assassin was up to.
Mostly, Christian wondered if Diana's suggestion to find Alyx and run away might actually be their best option.
"I'm wondering why my pregnant wife likes to ask so many questions so early in the morning," he said a teasing tone.

"That's easy." she replied crawling to the other side of him and straddling his waist, "He has a pensive look on his face, and he hasn't found another way of distracting me." she said using his same tone.
Pregnant. Wife.
If you had told her three months ago that this was her fate she would probably have wondered who your supplier was, and if she could get the same hallucinating potions.

If it was distraction she wanted Christian was more than happy to oblige her. He slid his hands underneath her and in one fluid movement he flipped their positions so that she lie on her back with Christian hovering over her. His lips trailed lightly against the skin of her neck and across her collarbone.
The most ridiculous thought sprang to mind as it had every time they started becoming intimate since Diana told him about the pregnancy. It was a new reflex that warned him to use protection to avoid any surprises, but the thought was quickly smashed by the realization that he was too late for such precautions.

Diana felt more than she saw the flicker of hesitation in his distraction, and it wasn't the first time either. As much as she loved what he did to her, she could sense an unspoken growing chasm between them. It was confusing, Christian was more attentive than ever, he yelled less, and technically was more tender with her, but there was this space, and it kept filling up with everything they didn't say to one another.
"What is it?" she asked interrupting their regularly scheduled program.

His eyes flickered up to her face and he continued running his lips lightly over her soft skin. "No more questions," he said as his hot breath warmed her skin.
She was full of questions and Christian didn't have any answers for her. They needed to talk about what was happening but it was difficult and this was so much easier, so much more fun.

Diana might have insisted if Christian wasn't so talented at distracting her. She wouldn't focus on anything other than the way her body felt for a while.
But after that while the questions came back. She sighed, her body relaxed and blissful, her mind not so at peace.
"Christian..." she began.

Rational thought had not yet returned to Christian's mind. He was blissfully unencumbered by the questions that plagued Diana.
"Hmm?" He was drawing lazy patterns on her breasts with his fingertips, not paying attention to the thoughtful expression on Diana's face.

She sighed stopping her own lazy action of running her hands through his hair.
"We have to talk." she said finally, flinching as she spoke.

His fingers hesitated as Diana reminded him of their unsolved situation. He moved his hand to rest on her still flat stomach. His child was in there, waiting for them to decide what they were going to do about his surprise visit. Christian found he thought of the baby as a boy more often than as a girl, but it was too early to tell. He still needed Hanley to confirm for him that anything was actually happening. It wasn't that he didn't believe Diana, he just needed the confirmation.

Diana placed her hand over his, still waiting for him to say something.
As the silence dragged out she grew restless, "We haven't really...I mean..."

"What do you want me to say, Diana?" He pulled his hand away and sat upright. "I don't know how to solve this problem."

She flinched when he called the pregnancy a problem. Sure she often thought of it in similar terms, but since their near death experience during the Ling hit she had realized how deeply she loved Christian, as well as how much she wanted the child. Even if it was complicated and messy she loved the baby that was growing inside her.
"I'm not sure it's something we solve Christian." she said tentatively.

Christian looked at her, confusion on his face. He realized quickly that he had misspoke and he corrected himself. "The problem is keeping you and the baby safe. If we run now, they'll hunt you down. If we fight them, you and I are bonded. It's too dangerous. I don't know what to do, Diana."
Christian was not used to this feeling. He almost always had a plan of action, and he took the time to see his plan be successful. It was what made him so good at what he did. He wasn't compulsive like Diana. He was methodic. The baby and their life bond threw too many variables into the equation and he was struggling to form a strategy that provided the results he desired. In any other situation he would decline the job, but he couldn't do that now.

She nodded. She agreed with him. The situation felt hopeless.
"I never thought I'd make it this far. There's only two board members left. It's too bad we can't hire assassins to finish the job." she lamented ironically.
"When is Hanley getting here?"

He chuckled darkly. "It might look bad if a man of my position couldn't handle a job on his own. And we certainly don't need it spread around that you're my Achilles' heel." He tapped his ring finger absentmindedly on his knee as he pondered their predicament.
Her question brought him out of his thoughts of the future and he focused on the present. He looked to the clock. "A few hours still. He said he'd be here around 11:00." He looked to her stomach again, a small smile playing on his lips.
"I'm sure you're hungry." He rose as he spoke, not needing her to respond to know the answer. She was always hungry anymore. Her symptoms should have been confirmation enough but Christian still needed to hear it from the doctor. Then they could talk about what would happen after the board members were taken care of.
