Dorian had sent an owl ahead notifying Christine of his arrival. He didn't want to cause her any undue stress by showing up unannounced. When he arrived at Montgomery Manor he was directed to Christine but dismissed the butler before he could announce Dorian. He needed a moment to prepare himself.
After several deep breaths and a mental slap across the face, Dorian knocked on Christine's door.

Christine hadn't heard from Dorian since their breakup. She craved him. The days stretched out and loomed overhead like an endless abyss of loneliness and despair. She couldn't go back, there was nothing to keep her going forward. Every day she withdrew a little more into herself.
It was startling how one owl could create such a change in her. She did what she could to appear her best, and ran the scenarios over and over in her mind as to what he wanted.
Her favorite was that he had realized he couldn't live without her and was coming to be with her again. Her heart was pounding as the seconds ticked away into minutes as she waited for him anxiously.
When the knock came it startled her so badly she jumped, she answered in a high pitched tone, "C-Come in."

Dorian appeared from behind the door, standing in the doorway. He kept his hand on the door knob, grounding him to that spot so as to not get too close to Christine. She looked amazing; Dorian cursed Lex for calling him out and forcing his hand in coming here today. He was not man enough for this.
"Hello."

Christine swore if her heart could beat out of her chest it would have done so at the sight of him. She blinked and swallowed her mouth now dry.
"Dorian." she whispered. The urge to run to him was so intense she gripped the chair she was sitting in to keep her where she was.
She took a long look at him. She was almost wounded by how devastatingly handsome he was.
"Please come in." she said finally.

He took a few steps into the room and shut the door behind him, but maintained the distance between them. He evaluated her, making sure she looked okay. She seemed thinner which displeased him as he knew how her sadness affected her eating habits.
"How are you doing?" She had clearly tried, and succeeded, in looking nice for him, but there were tell-tale signs that she was not doing well. It hurt him.

Christine wished he couldn't read her so well, but she knew that if anyone could it would have been him.
Her body was crying now to touch him. Straining for contact. The fact that he hadn't tried to move forward wasn't a good sign for Christine's fantasy.
"I'm..." she began thinking of what line to throw at him, finally she settled on the truth, she refused to lie to him ever again. She took a deep breath and let it all out, as well as any pretense at appearing fine, "I'm in hell Dorian, but I'm managing it." she said honestly.
"You needed to see me?"

The muscles in his body constricted as she admitted how poorly she was doing. He couldn't take all the blame for her emotional state, M played his part too. But Dorian knew that he was partially the reason she was in Hell and the knowledge increased his sense of self loathing.
He nodded at her question and moved closer to her, still keeping a careful distance between them. He knew it wouldn't last. He would tell her about M's message and she would break down. She would blame herself because she needed to blame someone and she was the most tangible thing she had. And he would try in vain to make her understand her innocence in all of this. Dorian knew how it would play out because he knew Christine like the back of his own hand.
"There's been a development you should be aware of." He gave her a dark look, not wanting her to get her hopes up that they had found the missing girls yet. They hadn't. He knew she blamed herself for that too. His darling martyr.
"M left a note at the latest crime scene. For you."

She wasn't expecting his news, but when he said it she felt ridiculous for not expecting his arrival to be ministry related, "M" related in particular - then the fear settled in.
He knew her well. Too well. She indeed had the briefest bit of hope when he mentioned a development, but his look prevented her from asking, and his next words sent chills down her spine.
"Latest crime scene?" she asked her heart picking up speed as her gut began twisting.
"He's killed another girl...?" the pain came too swiftly for her to control and large tears appeared in her eyes, "Oh god..." she trembled bringing her hand to cover her mouth.

Christine's reaction caused Dorian great discomfort as his love for her grew. She didn't hesitate for a second over the note that was left for her by the deranged serial killer that had attempted to kill her friend and had abducted her and tortured her for over two weeks. She was upset about the girl who had been killed.
He closed the gap between them and pulled her into his arms. He stroked her hair as he had done so many times before to calm her while she slept, dreaming of the dangers that were far too real for a girl so young.
"Shh, it's okay. You're safe here." He knew she wasn't crying for fear of her own life, but it was growing increasingly difficult to assure her that they would catch this man anytime soon and stop his reign of terror.

Christine allowed herself to be taken in by him. It was natural, the most natural thing she could imagine. She let herself curl into him as small as she could be, and allowed him to protect her from the outside world, but he couldn't fight the demons in her mind.
Her body shook as silent tears fell, "Who was she? Do they know yet?" Christine asked picturing the girls she had left behind. Which one of them paid for her freedom?

"Not yet," he said softly. They didn't have a name, the investigation was still too fresh. They had a body, a poem, and a message. Dorian only cared about the message. Christine only about the body.
He held her tighter as she sobbed, as if his strength could transfer through him to feed her. But he too was showing weakness as he held Christine in his arms. It felt so right for her to be pressed against him, despite the wretched news he had shared. He knew that it was wrong to have such thoughts but they persisted.

She cried harder picturing their faces. She just kept crying, shaking with fear and guilt.
Finally she stopped, feeling empty. "I'm sorry." she whispered pulling herself away from him.

He would have held her for a thousand hours would it make her feel safe, but as she pulled away his grips around her loosened and he dropped his hands to his sides. He gave her a puzzled look.
"Why on Earth should you be sorry? You've done nothing wrong."

She wanted to melt into his arms. She wanted to believe what he told her. She wanted to be a little girl and run away from the responsibility she was feeling, but she couldn't. He had made it clear that he wasn't that person for her. That she had lied to him, and because of that lie they couldn't be together. Turning to him for comfort now wasn't fair to either of them.
"I'm sorry that you had to come here." she told him, "I'm sorry that I can't seem to control myself."
She was sorry that girl was dead. She was sorry she couldn't save any of them. She was sorry that she wasn't able to help. She was sorry she was helpless.
She was trembling with fear and sadness but she was trying so hard to be strong.

The confusion didn't fade from his face as she spoke, but he closed the distance between them anyway. He lifted her face and wiped away her tears. "Christine, we can't be together. But it doesn't mean I don't care about you. I will always protect you and I will always be here when you need me."

She looked up at him, and it was plain on her face that she didn't know what to do. Being so close to him, being so terrified and guilty she knew there was an answer to take everything away, her eyes fell to his mouth, and she held her breath as she leaned forward.
Knock, Knock
Christine pulled herself together and looked at the door. She looked up at Dorian with questioning eyes.

She had him under a spell and had it not been for the knocking he would have done something unforgivably foolish and immoral. He looked at Christine as she looked at him, both clearly wondering the same thing. Who is that?
The Montgomery Manor was incredibly safe, but even still Dorian didn't trust the unknown. He moved to the door and opened it.

"Humbert." Grayson said surprised to see the man. He looked behind Dorian, "Miss Montgomery." he said with a little more apology in his voice.
He looked between them, "Kate told you about the..." he said letting his voice trail off.
Christine wrapped an arm around herself. She had spoken to Grayson at the Ministry, he was a kind man but also incredibly sharp. He wouldn't miss the tension between her and Dorian.

Whomever Dorian had been expecting to find on the other side of the door, Grayson was not it. Clearly Grayson was not expecting to see Dorian either. "Sir," he greeted in return.
Dorian looked quickly to Christine, his posture stiffening in the presence of the senior agent.
"Yes," Dorian answered without waiting for the rest of Grayson's sentence. "She asked me to notify Miss Montgomery of the developments."

Christine was surprised to see the auror as well.
"Can I help you Mr. Steele?" she asked wrapping her arms tighter around her.
"Yes." he answered stepping further into the room. "I trust Agent Humbert has informed you about another of M's victims."
She nodded sullenly.
"I apologize for this Miss Montgomery, but if you're willing I was hoping you might be willing to try something different."
"Different?"
"Hypnosis. We haven't been able to get a lock on M's location and I know that the experience was traumatic for you, but it might be able to provide us with some details."
"Yes." she said quickly, "Yes, I'll do anything."
