It was heartless and cruel to even think it, and there was certainly no way Dorian would say it aloud, but he would gladly give up all of the other girls' lives if it meant Christine was safe. He didn't care what she thought the outcome would be. She needed to stay out of sight, hidden and protected, until M was brought to justice.
"Your safety is worthy more than the attention a press conference would bring." He was trying to reason with her, if such a thing could be done. Dorian knew he didn't have the same pull over her now as he had before when they were together. He wasn't in charge of her security, he couldn't stay in her home with her to keep her safe. This was a completely different situation than before and he was practically powerless to do anything to keep her safe.

She gave him a look as they shared the same thought. He wasn't in charge of her anymore, not as her guardian and not as her lover. She was free to do as she pleased, and she would do what she thought was right. Still she threw him a bone.
"We'll hold the conference here, he won't be able to do anything while I'm on castle grounds. But maybe I can give hope to the other families, and maybe it will distract him, pull his focus away from the other girls, maybe even make him sloppy."

Dorian shook his head as she spoke. This wasn't a good idea. M could be anyone, he'd already been Christine and Dorian himself. He had Paige Owen writing for him, but Dorian couldn't even trust that it was actually Paige. What if it was M playing another part? There were too many variables for Dorian to agree to this foolish idea.

Fortunately Christine didn't need Dorian's approval to hold a press conference. She didn't even need the Ministry's approval, although they had given the green light.
"What Dorian?" she said anger beginning to mount as he shook his head at her, "I'm tired of hiding, of pretending it didn't happen, trying to move on. It happened and I have to deal with it, and I have to let him know that he didn't break me. I have to do this for me, for these girls and their families."

Letting M know that he had failed to break Christine's spirit was exactly what Dorian was afraid of. It would only make the monster search harder for her, to seek revenge on her for making the wizarding community think less of his strength.
But they had already had this conversation before. Dorian pictured Christine yelling at him at the Avalon, insisting she wouldn't spend the rest of her life in fear hiding from M. Dorian had forced her hand and took her to the safe house where she was abducted. It was his fault she had been taken, and it was his insistence on protecting her that had stoked the fire.
"You're right," he conceded. "I can't stop you if this is what you want. But please, Christine, be careful. I can't lose you a third time."

She gave him a hard look, "Don't." she said with heat, "Don't do that." she repeated dropping her arms and pacing back and forth.
"Don't say that you can't lose me a third time. I accept that we can't be together because I lied to you about who I was. But that's your decision not mine. I'm not yours to lose anymore remember? That was your choice."
She was volatile now. It was as though Grayson had broken through to her and she refused to be a victim any longer.

His jaw tensed as she scolded him, and rightfully so. Dorian had made the decision that they couldn't be together. It wasn't right for them to be so close after discovering the truth. But it didn't remove the feelings he held for her. He would need to do a better job at controlling himself if he expected her to move on.
Dorian took a step back and regained his traditional posture. He essentially transformed before her eyes into the Auror he had been before they had met. He wasn't cold to her, but he wouldn't show his affection for her either. "My apologies. I'll notify agents Steele and Donaghy of your decision. They'll be able to assist with the security measures."

She simultaneously wanted to run at him and beg him to love her again and kick him out for breaking her heart. She did neither.
Instead she turned away from him.
"This is better right?" she asked, this time unable to mask the bitterness in her voice, "You still love me." she told him angrily, "But this is what you want. This makes you happy." the last part baffled her.

Yes, it was better this way. Yes, he loved her very deeply, but his love for her was inappropriate. No, it wasn't what he wanted, but it was what was right. And no, it didn't make him happy.
Dorian inhaled sharply and held the break in his lungs, forcing himself to remain professional in her presence. "I'll let myself out. If you are in need of anything further, I suggest you ring Lex." He walked past her toward the door. He hesitated only a moment as he reached for the knob, but reclaimed himself and left.
