Dorian Humbert Aleksander “Alek” EiriksenThe MLE arrived a little while after Dorian had and surveyed the scene. They were taking apart the safe house now for any clues as to the Killer's identity or location as well as any signs of Christine. It was pure chaos at the office. Everyone had been on high alert and it still wasn't enough to stop this madman, the only good news was that he was getting bolder, which meant he'd inevitably make a mistake. Kate could only hope that would happen sooner than later, but she wasn't sure. Kate knew that Dorian was as close to the case as could be, he seemed to take it personally, and Kate remembered from their first meeting how insistent he was on being close to the victim. Now his partner was in the hospital. They needed his statement, but Kate knew that Dorian also needed answers so she went herself. Kate rapped her knuckles on the door. "Is she up yet?"

Shortly after arriving at the hospital with a near dead Lex, Dorian had paced a hole in the floor while waiting for the doctors to fill him in. They had been able to stablize her and set her up in a private room. Dorian had sent word to the MLE that Lex was in the urgent care wing of the hospital and he was ordered to stay with her. He was torn.
Dorian knew that this had been his fault. He had left the women alone, exactly as M had wanted him to. He didn't just walk into M's trap, he ran full speed and now Lex was laying there, motionless, on the verge of death. Of course he would stay with her.
But Christine was gone. Taken by the sadistic son of a banshee that had nearly killed Dorian not two weeks ago and had left Lex for dead tonight with a taunting letter written in blood. Dorian had given M exactly what he wanted. He needed to find Christine.
Currently, Dorian was sitting in a chair next to Lex's bed, one hand clutched tightly around his wand while the other hand held his head. There was a knock at the door and Kate poked her head inside. Dorian looked at her, guilt-stricken.
"No, they don't know when...if she'll wake up." His voice was heavy with the weight of what his foolishness had caused.

Kate nodded coming fully into the room with two cups of coffee. She handed one to Dorian.
She stayed silent for a moment then spoke softly, "I'm sorry. This has been the hardest on you."
She wished there was something she could say, but she knew it was pointless. She also could hear the guilt in his voice, she could tell him that it wasn't his fault but she already knew he wouldn't go for it.

He took the cup she offered and mumbled a "thank you" as he stared morosely at Lex's still body. She was connected to monitors and had tubes stuck in her arms, injecting her with potions that the doctors weren't sure would work. Every time he asked, he was met with some variation of "we're doing the best we can." It was lucky he didn't have this hot cup of coffee earlier or it would have ended up in the doctor's face.
Dorian nodded slowly as Kate offered her sympathies. He knew what she was thinking. He had been rash and irresponsible. Lex would be alive now - awake now, if it wasn't for him. Christine would be safe if he'd just done his job properly.
His eyes still focused intently on Lex's bruised and battered face Dorian asked, "have you contacted her family?"

"She actually doesn't have anyone on file." Kate said. They had checked just in case they should notify anyone. Kate knew Lex had family, but she didn't know where that family was, or how to reach them. They had people in the office waiting for a call however should someone need to know.
She was silent for some time again just looking at Lex. "This isn't your fault Dorian. This guy... this bastard...he got the upper hand on all of us.
There was a lot of pressure falling on Kate and Grayson's shoulders as well.

Dorian's brow furrowed. He knew Lex's mother had passed, but she had spoken of her father briefly and had mentioned her brother in passing at least a few times. She had also claimed a family emergency was the reason Dorian needed to stay with Christine just today. He knew that had been a ploy to get him to see Christine, but he had still figured she was with her family for some reason. And now there really was a family emergency and they were none the wiser.
Kate was trying to comfort him, but comfort was for the worthy. He deserved to feel like the slime at the bottom of a bin for what he had let happen. He looked at her silently, then stood. There were a few more moments of silence as he looked back to Lex before he broke. "Her family deserves to know she's here!" he bellowed without warning, jabbing his finger toward Lex.

Kate frowned, there was also sympathy in her eyes. She hated seeing anyone in misery let alone a colleague.
"I'm sure someone will call or come for her Dorian." she said patiently. That brought up a different subject.
"What about Christine?" she asked softly, "Do you want to be there when we notify her family?"
It was still relatively early, the ministry hadn't yet recovered from the hacked portrait system, and other operations that had been disrupted were being put to rights. They hadn't made any calls yet until they had finished getting statements, which is what Kate was technically doing with Dorian, still she knew that the man was grieving enough and too much to ask for a statement right away.

Her patience with him made his outburst all that more painful. He didn't know what to do, but lashing out at Kate wasn't going to fix anything. He inhaled deeply, trying to regain some tiny semblance of composure though it was an insurmountable task.
Kate mentioned Christine. He looked up. The noble answer to her query was yes. The professional answer was yes. But his heart told him no. It would hurt too much. He didn't know Christine's family. He would not be there to commiserate with them, to share their pain. The event would be torturous for him. It would kill him.
"Yes, I think I should be there," he answered, emotionless.

Kate chewed on the inside of her lip in silence. She didn't know how to be there for him. This was all so new to her. The London office was so different than the one in New York. It was closer, tight-knit, probably due to Angelique. The aurors sincerely had one another's backs and took it personally when one of their own fell. Kate was new to all of it, but Grayson had been pushing her to get used to it, and now it hurt. It hurt to see her colleagues in pain.
"Here." she said after a bit of silence, handing him a pen and a notepad. "For your statement, so you don't have to go to the office."

He sank back into the chair, deflated, as he took the notepad and pen from her. His statement. He would have to relive this nightmare in grueling detail. It was a cruel practice, no matter the value it held to the investigation. He felt ill, thinking of how he had pressed Christine over a month ago for her statement just after having come upon Penny Young's corpse in the park. "I'll have it to you within the hour."
There was a commotion in the hall and Dorian's grip on his wand tightened. He looked to the door as it swung open.

Kate had been standing next to the door when it was thrown open and she jumped back her wand at the ready. Ordinarily weapons weren't allowed, but being Aurors they were the exception.
She wasn't sure what to expect at this intrusion, but if the man had meant to do harm, he certainly entered the wrong room.
Kate waited for an explanation or at the very least a name.

"I don't need a bloody pass, she's my God-damned sister!" Alek growled sinisterly. The guard outside the door was attempting to keep Alek from entering Lex's room. It would not end well for the guard.
"I just need to see some ID, sir," the guard tried patiently.
Alek snarled, shoving his ID in the guard's face. The guard was lucky that the hospital happened to be overrun with MLE, otherwise he'd be about a jugular lighter than he stood now. As the guard looked over Alek's ID, Alek forged ahead and pushed the door open.
The guard rushed in after Alek, attempting to regain control of the situation. "Agent Eiriksen's brother," he announced a little too late.
"What happened?" Alek snarled at the room at large, his hands tightening into fists at the sight of Lex lying in the hospital bed, covered in deep slashed and tubes.

Everything happened very quickly, but Kate was accustomed to acting fast, "Let him in, it's alright O'Connor." she said not pocketing her wand, but trying to diffuse the situation.
"She was protecting a witness, and she was attacked by the man we're after now. Agent Humbert found her at the scene and brought her to the hospital." she explained.
Alek's rage and fear was too sincere to be anyone other than who he said he was.

Dorian stood as Alek entered the room, leaving the notepad forgotten on the chair. The man who had entered was understandably angry, and Dorian turned his wand over in his hand vigilantly. O'Connor announced the man and Dorian felt a sweeping surge of guilt. Alek asked what happened and a new wave of torment washed over him as Kate provided an answer.
"Your sister is very brave. She fought well." His comments felt hollow as Lex laid in the bed, unresponsive, but he felt he needed to say something to Lex's brother.

Alek raged internally at his sister. He had warned her against getting involved with their half-brother and now she stood on death's door. But this was not Aleksandra's fault. His sister could fend for herself, though he rarely liked to acknowledge so. If the serial killer had overcome her, it was because Dorian had led him to her.
"What would you know about her bravery," he snarled at Dorian, his eyes still fixed on the devices keeping his sister alive. "Where were you when this man came to slaughter my sister?" His voice was low but menacing. His fists shook with malice, only mere feet from where his nemesis stood and yet he did nothing. The restraint he showed would not last.

"That's enough." Kate said roughly. It was understandable that Lex's brother would be upset, devastated even, and he'd want to blame someone, but Dorian wasn't the person. And she'd be damned if she'd let anyone, family or not, tear down someone who had been through hell tonight.
"He was doing his job, just as Lex was. No one is responsible for this except for the man who did it."
Instantly Kate knew this man was dangerous, not run of the mill dangerous, not serial killer dangerous, something else. Alek was a man with his own set of rules, a superiority that came from knowing he was untouchable, and that was very dangerous indeed.

"It seems to me that if any of you were doing your job, this man would not be running amok kidnapping women and cutting down Aurors." He turned slowly to face them, his eyes threatening. "But what more is to be expected from the Ministry. Bureaucrats never get the job done efficiently."
Alek's wolves had been guarding the safe house whenever Lex was on duty. But she wasn't supposed to be there tonight. Someone at the Ministry had made a grave error and Alek was quite certain that it had something to do with Dorian. He would pay for this.

Dorian drowned silently in the man's well-placed hatred. Alek was correct in accusing Dorian of making a deadly mistake. Lex should not have been at the safe house. She should not be the one dying in front of them now.
Kate defended him, but Dorian wished she wouldn't. He didn't deserve her defense. He had no defense. He stood motionless, grip tight on his wand by his side, waiting. He wasn't sure what he was waiting for, but he felt something coming.

Lex felt heavy, weighed down and numb. The potions in her system were healing her wounds, but the pain would have been excruciating if it weren't for another potion that attempted to dull her senses.
She would have given into the darkness and numb feeling were it not for a familiar voice. She could hear him nearby. Dorian. She had to wake up, she had to tell him that Christine was taken. She just couldn't break through the haze, but suddenly there was another voice, more familiar to her than her own. Alek.
He was angry, she knew he was angry. She could hear the fear in his voice too. She had to tell him to calm down. She was often the only person who could calm him down.
"Don't...fight."

At hearing Lex's barely audible voice Alek wheeled around, his eyes wide with shock and hope. Lex was awake. He gave an involuntary smile as he looked down at her and reached for her hand. "Don't tell me what to do, sister dear," he said softly to her, temporarily forgetting the others in the room. He was overjoyed that she was awake, this was a good sign that she would recover, wasn't it? But his joy did not replace the anger he felt, it merely shared a room in his heart.
A moment later he looked over his shoulder at the two Aurors in the room with him. "Fetch a doctor," he ordered with a low growl. The pair were clearly too daft to figure out how hospitals worked and would need his guidance. He turned back to Lex, his expression softening slightly.
