She shakes her head. She knew if she was rescued, out would be either death or back in the pit for her. Even Leander could not stop that from happening. If he was even still alive.
"A man. Human. Saved me. Why?"

Rutger was confused for a moment. Her speech was disjointed under the best of circumstances, and when she was dealing with a situation she didn't understand, like now, her words were even more unsure. He looked from her to the door and back again before comprehension dawned on him.
"Oh... the healer?" he asked. Apparently the young man had made quite an impression on Kryshna... which made him wonder if the same could be said of the healer himself. It was curious, and Rutger made a mental note to follow up with that later.
"You were raised to kill, so you cannot understand any other way of life. But there are humans whose job is to heal others... to save lives. He saved you because I asked him to and because it is his job."

"Oh.. duty."
She looked away from the door and at the ground. It had been his duty to save her. He had been tasked with it. It meant nothing. Did him coming in to talk to her also mean nothing? Was he told to come in and feed her? It seemed an odd task to be given. But then again, other's had been tasked with similar obligations.
Her eyes grew darker. Conflicting thoughts sprung up in her mind. Outwardly, she actually looked upset by this, or at least confused by it. Her darker side began to surface as her thoughts strayed back to her instinctual side.

Her reaction to this information was something Rutger could not have expected. He would have thought she would understand the concept of duty and it would have eased her mind about the young healer's puzzling behavior. That he had treated her with kindness must have been strange for her, and he thought it would be easier if he explained it simply. Instead, however, she seemed... disappointed. Possibly even hurt. He had thought her incapable of human emotions... but perhaps he was wrong.
Strangely, he was reminded of how he felt when Alana was first assigned as his partner. It had been shortly after he'd collapsed from exhaustion and the Minister had decided that he needed a partner to look after him. He'd been adamantly against having a partner, and even more adamant against having Alana as a partner. He thought she was too pretty, too cheerful, not serious enough. And when she tried to get him to take breaks, to stop and eat, to go home and get some rest at the end of the day, he had tried to push her away, because he thought that she had been ordered to do these things by the Minister. When it turned out that she had never been told to "take care of him," he became a bit more receptive to her.
Rutger frowned, studying Kryshna. He couldn't decide whether it was a bad thing or a good thing for her to be capable of emotions.
"Does that bother you?" he asked slowly.

Kryshna looked up at him blankly, once more. She was confused by his question. Did it bother her? What did that even mean to someone who did not understand human emotions? She had never been asked how she felt about something. It was all too much for her. Everything in the past day had been too much.
Kryshna curled up again and held her head. A groan escaped her as she drew herself as tightly as she could into the dark. It was the only thing familiar to her in the room. Shadows. For now, she said nothing.

Rutger studied her silently for a very long time, just watching her and wondering what was going on in her head. In all the time he had been chasing her, he had never known what to expect when he finally caught her. All of his attempts to profile her had proven wrong. Her killings had been ritualistic, as he had expected, but not random. The only pattern was one that had nothing to do with her at all. She was not logical, and yet she was not totally a beast, either. It troubled his rational mind, because he couldn't quite put her into a simple category that he could understand. She was more complex than that.
Finally he decided that they had both had enough for today. He was tired, and he needed to check back with Alana. And Kryshna didn't seem particularly receptive to answering any more questions today. So he rose from his chair and approached her cautiously.
"I think that's enough for today," he said. "I'll come back again soon to ask you more questions and see if we can find a more permanent place to keep you. Is there anything you need?"

When he approached her, she shrank away from him. Instinctually, she really was like a wounded, trapped animal. But there was a deeper level to her. Many, if he could read her correctly. The humanity that had been ripped away from her occassionally broke through. It was as if three different beings in one. The human, the vampire and the beast.
When he asked her if she needed anything else, she looked up at him again, in the eyes. He could see all three of them looking back at once. She said nothing, only looked at the door then back to Rutger.

Again, he followed her gaze to the door, puzzled. If she thought he was going to let her out, she was definitely mistaken. But somehow he didn't think that was what she was asking him. Remembering what she had said the last time she looked at the door, he frowned.
"You want to see the healer again?" he asked.
He wasn't sure he liked the idea.... but perhaps she still had some injury that had failed to regenerate. It occurred to him that she probably needed blood, but he wasn't about to give her some of his, and he knew better than to ask the hospital staff to allow her to drink some from their supply. Just having her here at all was enough of an imposition.

Kryshna thought for a moment longer about his question. She was tired, exhausted even. Once she had recovered enough, all she had done was struggle and rage against those chains until Keiran had come in. He had calmed her beast enough to where she could speak to Rutger.
She nodded to Rutger as an answer to his question. She felt safer with the healer there. Logically, it made no sense to her, but the feeling was still there, nagging at her.

Rutger hesitated for a long, silent moment. He stared at her, a deep frown creasing his features. He should say no. In fact, he should get her out of here and as far away from the young healer as soon as possible. He didn't know what the connection was between the two of them, but it troubled him. After all, he knew nothing about the healer... he didn't even know the boy's name. What if he worked for Voldemort? What if he was just looking for a way to break her out? He couldn't very well let just anyone into this room, until he could verify their identities and allegiances.
But on the other hand, if the healer was indeed trustworthy, he might be useful. Anyone who could make Kryshna relax, anyone she would respond to in a positive way, couldn't be bad.
After what seemed like an eternity of reflection, Rutger nodded slowly. "All right. But I will need to talk to the young man first. If he passes my interrogation, I will send him in."
He didn't wait for a response from her. He just turned and left the room, closing the door behind him with a heavy clang.
(I'm going to need to RP with myself again for a bit...)

Kieran was waiting outside the room, leaning against the opposite wall while the two guards stared menacingly at him. He'd nearly run for the door at one point, when he heard a loud crash and the man's voice yelling from inside the room. But the guards' forbidding looks prevented any such activity, and in the end, he'd stayed slumped against that wall, just waiting.
It went virtually silent for a while, and just as Kieran was sure one of them had killed the other, the door abruptly opened, and the auror stepped out, closing the door behind him. The guards parted to let him pass, but he barely seemed to notice their presence. Instead, his eyes immediately focused on Kieran, and the young man nearly squirmed under the heat of the older man's gaze.
"What?" he managed to say.

Rutger had hoped that the boy would have gone home by now, and that he wouldn't have to make good on his parting promise to Kryshna. He was in no mood for an interrogation, and had no desire to let just anyone in the room with Kryshna. He needed to know that this healer wasn't planning to break her out.
"Come with me," he said bluntly in a tone that brooked no argument. He dragged the young healer into an empty exam room down the hall from Kryshna's temporary cell, then faced the boy.
"Your name," he barked, his accent making him sound rather like a stereotypical German general in a bad war movie.

Kieran was sweating now. The German could be quite intimidating when he wanted to be, and apparently, he wanted to be intimidating right now. He followed behind the man and sank into a small plastic chair once they were inside the exam room.
"Kieran Michael Dawn," he said. "I've worked here for three years, after my apprenticeship was complete."

Rutger assessed the boy as he spoke. He could run a background check on him, and probably would. It was the kind of thing he'd normally have Sean or Daniel do, but they were a bit distracted right now. Of course, so was he, but he didn't usually allow himself to stay distracted for long.
"The vampire wants to see you," he said. "Why? Why would she want to see you?"

Kieran gulped and forced himself to meet the auror's eyes. He was surprised to hear that Kryshna would want to see him again. Surprised and strangely pleased. It was dangerous and stupid and if his mother ever found out, she'd have a fit.... but he didn't care. This was the first time in a long time that he felt anything but acute pain deep in his gut.
Later he'd have to think about why.
"I helped her. I healed her injuries. I guess she feels... connected to me."

Rutger's eyes narrowed. Kryshna didn't feel connections. She'd made that perfectly clear during their talk. Oh, she might notice the similarities between the two of them, but that didn't make them friends, and it didn't mean that she trusted him. Merlin knew he didn't trust her.
"Why should I trust you? How do I know you don't work for this Lord Voldemort character?"

Kieran's eyes met the auror's once again, and this time he kept them locked in place. He had nothing to hide. "Because he's responsible for the deaths of half of my family. My father, my little sister, and my fiancee all died in an attack on the village of Hogsmeade that was done in his name. I'd rather die myself than serve him."
He felt stronger now, just for having spoken the words. He crossed his arms over his chest, defying the auror to argue with him.

Well, that did it for Rutger. If the story itself and the defiant stance hadn't been enough, then the sadness in Kieran's eyes that couldn't be suppressed would have sealed the deal.
But the story itself reminded Rutger of his own tragic story... his parents dead and gone before he ever even got to know them. That was enough proof for him. He needed once, and his gaze softened. He'd still run a background check... but for now, he reasoned, it would be all right.
"All right," he said. "You may go in to see her. Don't stay long. And if she acts out... call the guards."

Kieran nearly fell over with relief. He'd been almost convinced he would wind up being sent to Azkaban just for befriending the creature. If you could even call it befriending her. He actually had no idea what had happened between him and the vampire. Maybe she just wanted more blood and figured he was the only one who'd give her any.
"Thank you, sir," he said, bowing because he felt like he should.
They left the exam room, and the auror must have given the guards a nod, because they parted easily for him and opened the door for him.
Kryshna was shadowed in darkness, lying against the wall, when he stepped inside. He hesitated, standing there for a moment. Now what?
"Kryshna?"

Kryshna looked up at Kieran, quietly. She was calm and he could see that very clearly, even through the darkness. She sat up and moved closer to him. Her movements were a bit like what one would envision a panther moving would look like, though tired.
She sat at the edge of the shadows, just before the sunlight, and looked at him.
"German gone?"
She seemed anxious, tired. Whatever talk had happened between her and Rutger seemed to have taken much out of her. On top of that, it would seem as though she hadn't slept at all.
