Caroline let out a slow breath, her mind still imagining how much damage a vampire could have done. If anyone had slipped up, there could have been a lot of grieving people. And as selfish as she knew it was, what would she do without Jordan? he'd been such a part of her life for so long now that she wouldn't know how to live without him. She wanted to beg him again to be careful, but he'd already promised.
Moving slightly so that her head was on his shoulder and she could see his face, she just shook her head. "I lost my appetite a while ago," she agreed, and shifted again as though she were about to pull away from him, perhaps missing what he was trying to say. "I'll put everything away."

There was a time when she would have understood his suggestion right away. It was like they had forgotten how to communicate with each other, and no longer understood subtle hints or flirtatious behavior.
He tried to ignore the hurt feeling when she started to pull away, and he clung to what she had said earlier. She didn't want to be without him. Surely that meant that she loved him...
He didn't let go as she shifted, and he kept looking right at her, his eyes full of tenderness. "No... that can wait," he said. "Why don't we... go upstairs?"
He didn't want to break the moment, and he rather thought that if they took a break to put the leftovers away, the moment would be lost. And Merlin, he just needed her now.

When he didn't let her go, Caroline stopped, eyes coming back to meet his. She understood then, of course, what he was trying to say, and she sighed softly. It had been a while since hey slept together, like that, anyway. Usually there was just so much tension and arguing between them that they often went to bed not even speaking to each other.
But like Jordan, she knew this was a good night. They hadn't been this kind and gentle towards each other in a long time, and they shouldn't waste that. Caroline kept her gaze steady on Jordan and nodded slowly. "Yeah... Okay." She squeezed his hand and smiled, feeling somehow relieved that he still even wanted her.

He was relieved, too. He'd half expected her to pull away from him again, to turn cold and distant again. He couldn't bear it if that happened again, not when things were going so well. Nights like these were so rare, and he wanted to take advantage of that, to try and build things back up again. Maybe they could finally break through that wall that was separating them.
Jordan waved his wand at the takeout containers on the table, and they began packing themselves back up. Another quick wave sent the packages floating off to the kitchen and into the refrigerator. Then he smiled softly at her and kissed her again before taking her by the hand and leading her upstairs.

It felt so good just to be quiet like this- quiet and together. While she still had that creeping sense of fear that something terribly dangerous could have happened, and she might have lost Jordan today, he was relaxing her and putting her mind at ease.
Just a few short years ago, they'd been best friends, and he could put her at ease with barely more than a look, or a touch of his hand. He used to take her fear away, and now she stopped letting him do that for her.
As they both stood, she couldn't help herself and she moved forward, wrapping her arms around her husband and just holding him close. "I love you," she whispered, words that she didn't say nearly often enough any more. Words that she wasn't sure he was going to return when he found out her secret.

Jordan closed his eyes and kissed her softly. "I love you, too," he whispered against her lips.
He needed to say the words to her just as much as he needed to hear her say them. With the distance that had been growing between them lately, sometimes he felt plagued with doubts and uncertainties. He couldn't seem to escape the nagging doubt that there was something she wasn't telling him, something that was plaguing him. He was pretty sure that, whatever it was, they could get through it together if only she would tell him the truth.
The only thing he didn't think he could handle was his biggest fear--that there was someone else. She spent so much time alone all day that he couldn't help but worry that she might have found someone to help take away her loneliness for a little while. He didn't want to think that about her, but when she was so obviously holding back on him, he was left to imagine the worst.
But moments like this one, however rare they might be, were what gave him hope. They could work this out, he was sure of it. They had to, because he had loved her so long that he wasn't sure he could imagine life without her.
"It's going to be all right," he whispered as he led her upstairs. He wasn't sure if he was saying it to reassure himself or her.

(I think we're pretty much done here, no?)
