After Riley left, Geoffrey was at a complete loss for what to do with himself. It felt like his entire world was imploding and he just didn't know how to handle it.
He had realized the terrible, hopeless truth--that he was in love with his best friend. But she was engaged to Roland, and they were blissfully in love. Which meant that Geoffrey was losing his best friend.
He needed to talk this all out, and since he couldn't tell his best friend, there was really only one person he could talk to. After pacing the floor of his room for a good ten minutes, he finally walked out and went down the hall in search of his sister.
Knocking on the door of her bedroom, he leaned close to the opening and whispered, "Christine? are you in here?"

Christine was fidgeting with a pen though she didn't realize it. Her nerves had been strung up lately and she hadn't been sleeping. She was losing track of the days and the world around her, the only solid point in her life was her brother and he was going through his own slew of problems. Strangely realizing that she wasn't the only one with problems, and finding that she could help someone else was a relief to her, a way of pushing back the darkness in her own mind and dealing with someone else's.
When she heard his whisper she was eager to see him and dropped the pen, "Yeah, Come in."

Geoffrey took a breath and opened the door, stepping inside without a word. For a moment, he just looked at her, his back pressed against the door, trying to figure out what he was even going to say. For once in his life, he was just completely lost, and he couldn't even see a way back again.
How could he not know that he was in love with Riley all this time? And what did it mean for Alison? He cared for her very much, and there was a part of him that felt certain that she could save him if he would only let her. But had he ruined that, too?
He was a mixed-up bundle of emotions, and finally, he just crumbled, sinking down against the door and burying his face in his hands. "Christine... I... I'm so confused..."

She was by his side in less than a second her arms around him. It didn't matter what the problem was, they'd solve it together, and everything would be okay. "What's wrong? What happened?" she asked before biting her lip, she sounded more distressed than usual, but then again Geoff didn't do things like this very often and she was worried.

Where did he even begin? He was a jumbled mass of emotions, and he wasn't even sure which ones were real anymore. Did he love Riley? Did he love Alison? And why had he slept with Nathalia?
"I... Is it possible to be in love with two people at once? Or to love someone and not even know it until you lose her to someone else? I... I think I love Alison, but I also think... I might be in love with Riley. But I didn't know it until just now... when she told me she was engaged to Roland."

Christine's eyes widened, her brother was coming to her for relationship advice? What did she know really about relationships? She was supposed to go to him in tears and ask questions, but none of that was relevant truth was she was also surprised that Riley was getting married to Roland, Roland being alive still surprised her.
She had fallen into this temporary state of mind where nothing was real and everything could be changed, still she didn't know how to convey that to her brother. She took a deep breath, "I'm sorry Geoff...I don't know...I've never been in love."

Of course she wouldn't know, not really. There wasn't anything anyone could do or say that would make this easier or less confusing. Things had been too easy for Geoffrey for too long, and he had never really figured out who he was or what he wanted out of life. And when he'd been hit with the Imperius Curse, he had lost all control of himself. Now he didn't know how to really trust himself. His emotions were a jumble and his head was flooded with thoughts that didn't even make sense to him. He loved Alison, but he also loved Riley. But she loved Roland. So was Alison his second choice or his first choice? Was it fair to her if she was anything but his first choice? And why had he cheated on her with Nathalia?
"Don't," he said. "Don't ever fall in love. It hurts and it's confusing... and guys... guys suck. All of us. Even me. Especially me. I don't know what I'm feeling or who I really love. I can't have Riley... Alison deserves better than a guy who loves someone else and who cheated on her with another girl... what's wrong with me, Christine? Why is my life falling apart?"

Christine wished she had the answers, but the truth was Geoffrey was always the one she went to for answers, either Geoffrey or one of her uncles who always had the answers or if not the answers, they had an amazing way of making her feel better, she wished she could do that for Geoff, but all she was capable of was holding him, and promising that someday things would be okay.
"You'd never let anything bad happen to me." she said assured of that fact alone, " You always protect me Geoff." she could fall in love, Geoff, not to mention her uncles would skin the boy alive if he hurt her.

Maybe that was the problem. Geoffrey had a tendency to take care of everyone else but himself. He had always been that way. He took care of Christine, of Riley, of the rest of his family, but he didn't know how to take care of himself, not really. He had no idea what he wanted or who he really was, deep down. He didn't realize this (and would have been horrified if he had), but this made him very similar to his cousin Roland.
What he needed, therefore, was someone who would take care of him, and then he could take care of her. That was what a relationship was, wasn't it? Two people taking care of each other and loving each other.
In that instant, he realized that Alison was the one who could do that for him. She was warm and loving and sweet, and she had been there for him, trying to visit him in the hospital even thought he had been sending her away. And where had Riley been? With Roland.
But he had cheated on Alison, and he somehow doubted that she'd be really understanding when she found out about that. If she did.
"I'll always be there for you," he told her softly. "But I'm a mess right now.... I've messed everything up. And I don't know how to fix it."

"You'll figure it out." she said with complete confidence, "You always do." she nodded, "And even when you don't...you're a Montgomery. Montgomeries survive."
It was true, they fought, and sometimes they even died, but their spirits survived. Sam was a perfect example of that recently, but not just Sam, all of them had survived terrible things, and they were being tested now and they would come out of it damaged but alive. Christine didn't know how true that statement was, she didn't know what her own parents had been through, what her uncles had been through, what all of them were going through, but they would survive...it was their way.

It was true that a person never really knew what they were capable of until they had been tested. But Geoffrey felt he was being tested now... and he wasn't doing so well with it. In fact, he rather thought he was failing miserably. He was so tired.... he just wanted to crawl under a rock and stay there. He didn't want to fight anymore.
"I did something.... something I'm ashamed of. I regret it now... but at the time, I was so messed up, I didn't even think about the consequences of my actions. And I'm afraid if Alison finds out... you and Alison are pretty much the only good things I've got going on in my life right now. And I'm afraid if she finds out, I'll lose her. You might not even look at me the same way again."

"There's nothing you could do Geoff that would make me love you less. You're my brother and that will never change." she told him firmly ," And Alison cares a great deal for you. I couldn't imagine her not at least trying to be understanding, but no matter what happens I'll always be here for you, and more than that...there's always time to change things for your future...you can't do anything about the past, but as long as you're alive you can start doing things that will shape your tomorrows."

Geoffrey didn't know it then, but those words would eventually come back to him and start him on the path of change he needed to take to fix his life. But he wasn't ready to do it, not yet. Maybe he needed everything to crash down around him completely in order to build it all back up, better and stronger than ever.
But right now, hearing them just made him feel all the more lost, because he just didn't know what steps to take to fix things. All he could see was the broken pieces, but he had no idea how to make them whole again.
"I cheated on Alison. I got really drunk that night I went out with the guys from the office, and I ended up going home with some girl at Stu's."

Christine was confused for a moment if only because something like that was so alien to Geoffrey's character. She almost couldn't comprehend and finally she understood why he was so torn up about what he did, it really was out of his character, but these attacks had done strange things to all of them and that had been Geoff's way of coping. It broke her heart.
"I can't promise that Alison won't want to cut out your heart and make you eat it for breakfast..." she said with a small pause and perhaps a slight bit of levity to hide her shock, "You've done her a great wrong that's true...but Geoff...none of us are acting right since Roland...I'm not saying it's an excuse but it's normal. None of us have ever done normal...especially you. You've always been at the top of everything, always doing right always doing good...we never screw up...we're supposed to do it sometimes...but we just don't...this time you did...it's not right, but you're not a bad person because of it."

And there it was. It was easy for Geoffrey to blame Roland for all of this. If not for Roland's stupid plan, Geoffrey wouldn't have been cursed. He wouldn't have tried to kill his best friend, he wouldn't have these nightmares, he wouldn't be afraid to leave the house, and he wouldn't have needed to get completely wasted when he did. And he wouldn't have slept with a girl he didn't know just to make him forget about all of his problems for a while. But was it really fair to blame Roland for that? Shouldn't he be trying to take responsibility for his own mistakes?
But right now, it was just too hard for him to do that. All he could see was the horrific chain of events that led to him trashing his own life. And Roland had started that chain reaction when he decided to fake his own death. Of course, Christine didn't know about that. She only knew the fake story Roland had told everyone, allegedly to protect them. And for one nasty moment, Geoffrey wanted to tell Christine the truth, just so she would be as angry at Roland as he was.
But he kept his mouth shut. Because to tell Christine the truth would also mean telling her that he had known Roland was alive weeks before she did. That he had found out on the day of Roland's funeral, and that he had also found out that Riley was pregnant with Roland's child--a child conceived when Roland was supposed to be dead.
No, it didn't do any good to tell Christine about this now. She was his one ally, his rock. He couldn't chase her away.
Instead, he just clung to her and hugged her tightly. "Should I tell Alison the truth? Or keep it from her and hope she doesn't hear it from someone else?"

Christine gave Geoffrey a serious look, "I think that if you truly want things to work out between the two of you...if you ever want to have Alison's trust again...then you should tell her. Things like this always have a way of coming to the surface and if it did happen and Alison didn't hear it from you I think she'd be more hurt and trust you even less. Besides I know you Geoff...if you were to keep a secret like this, it would eat you up inside."

He sighed, knowing she was right. He didn't want to tell Alison; didn't want to see that look on her face when he said the words. She had been nothing but wonderful through all of this, and she deserved better. The least he could do was be honest with her.
"You're right," he said. "I just... wish I didn't have to."
Ultimately, that was the problem. He didn't want to face up to his many problems, and he didn't know how to fix them. Eventually, he would start to put the pieces back together, but right now, he just wanted to feel sorry for himself. Was that so wrong?

She wasn't accustom to being the responsible one, at least not with her brother, but here she was holding him as he fell apart and as she had already lost all hope. It figured that they would cling to each other now, and she would stand beside him, she would be his rock if he needed one. She wouldn't let him down, Montgomeries didn't know how to fail, well at least in the endgame. He would turn things around, and she would make things right somehow.
"You don't have to do anything right now...but keep breathing...just keep breathing and we'll get through this together."

In moments like this, Geoffrey realized how much he had missed his little sister when she had been away on her many trips with Uncle Christopher. He had stayed behind to be the responsible one... he went to school, he got a job... he tried to be his own person while still trying to please his parents. Now he realized that he had missed out on so much... that he should have been with his sister, having an adventure and just experiencing life. It was like he had been waiting for his life to begin... and now, maybe it finally had--only not the way he would have wanted it to. But maybe it all had to come crashing down before he could build it up the way he wanted it to be.
"I'm glad you're here, Chrissy," he said. "I don't know what I would have done without you."

"Survive." she answered him, "Montgomeries always survive." she said with little substance to back her words, it was simply something she was taught, she never understood its full meaning until recently, and now it was more a mantra, something she clung to because it was something old and familiar. Compared to the recent happenings in her life, getting kidnapped in foreign countries and threatened by desert shieks was a breeze.
