Roland laughed. "Yeah, I guess I do. I'm not sure how it happened, really. I kind of thought I'd be a bachelor for life, living alone in my little apartment, eating takeout and sleeping on the couch. I never even realized that I wanted all this until Riley came along. Now, I wouldn't go back to that life for anything in the world."
Despite the way it seemed, with the dog and the baby on the way, Roland didn't think that he and Riley would ever be the white picket fence types. They weren't exactly an "average" couple, and Roland couldn't imagine a time when things between them would ever be dull or predictable. Instead of marriage signalling the end of their freedom and adventure, Roland was pretty sure that marriage to Riley would be the greatest adventure he'd ever had.
"Luckily, I think Riley has a similar style to mine, so decorating shouldn't be too hard," he said. "It'll just be nice to have enough room for everything, you know?"

"I never thought you'd be a bachelor for life," Ama smiled at Roland. "Mom may have, but I never did," she added as a funny after thought. "You just had to find someone else with the same crazy life style as yours."
"Enough room for everythimg?" Ama rased an eyebrow and laughed. "Roland, I live out of one dresser and a trunk, I hardly have sace for anything," she rolled her eyes. She had expressed this concern of hers to Jamie, but he just brushed it off as her being a drama queen.

"I still don't know why Mum was so desperate to fix me up with someone," Roland said, shaking his head. "I swear, she would ask me about girls every time she saw me... yet she wouldn't even acknowledge that Cyrus was with Lina. I'm almost afraid that now that I'm with Riley, she'll change her mind and decide that she doesn't want me with Riley."
Of course, he had a reason why he expected that, a reason that he couldn't share with Ama. Riley had known all that he wasn't really dead, and had kept this fact from his family. But she had done it because he had asked her to, because it was the only way to make sure his family was safe from Blake. He understood now why Cara was angry and how much she had been hurt by his scheme. But he wished she wouldn't blame Riley for what he had done.
"Anyway, even if that does happen, I'm not changing my mind. And I can convince her."
After what had happened, she wouldn't want him out of her life, Roland was sure of that. She wouldn't try make him choose, as she had done with Cyrus. She would just have to accept that he was in love with Riley and that he wouldn't let her go for anything.
Ama's next comment made him laugh. "You're still young... right now, you don't need that much space. I didn't even need that much space when I was single. But I'm going to be married, and have a baby... that means we need more things, and more space to put them."

"Oh she just loves you," Ama waved off sincerely. It was the truth after all. Their mother wanted her son to be happy, all her children actually. "And, even if she doesn't like Riley now, which is a streatch I hope you know, Riley's amazing, Mom knows that in the end you'll do what makes you happy." Sometimes Ama would even surprise herself with the wise statements she had in her. Maybe it was the Ravenclaw in her.
"Lot's of room," Ama commented on her brother's house. "Baby's take up a lot of room you should see Cy's place," Ama giggled.

Roland couldn't help but smile. Amandine was growing up, he realized. Even though in his eyes she was still a little girl with her hair in pigtails, the truth was, she was growing up fast. And she was a smart girl, wise beyond her years. Roland felt strangely humbled by her, knowing what an immature prat he'd been when he was her age.
"Yeah, I know. Things haven't been easy for Mum lately... well, for anyone, really. But Mum's got a lot to adjust to... My dying and coming back, my being in love with Riley, Cyrus getting married to Lina..." He trailed off, deciding not to mention the troubles she was having with their father. He was sure Ama knew about them, but he didn't know if she knew how bad things really were.
"Anyway, I'm really glad you like Riley. It's important to me that everyone like her.... I want her to feel like she's part of the family. She's not close to her own family, so I want her to feel at home in ours."

She never really understood why his FAMILY couldn't know he was alive. Riley got to, but she was an auror. but their whole FAMILY was Aurors, in 4 years, Ama herself would probably be on track to becomming an auror.
She tried not to dwell on it too much. What passed had passed and Ama was looking forward to what the future had for her and her family.
"Of course," she said to her liking Riley. It wasn't hard, Ama thought she was really nice. She was good for Roland too.
With her ice cream finished and their bill paid, Ama hopped off the stool and offered her arm to her oldest brother. "Walk me to school?" she asked with a grin.

(Actually, Ama doesn't know that yet... I figure this information should come out eventually, but right now, she has no idea that Riley knew Roland was alive, or that he faked his death.)
Roland smiled at her. He smiled a lot more now that he was with Riley, and he was also looking forward to his future life with her. But he still had to work on suppressing that urge to try and fix everything with the rest of the family. He wanted to fix what was wrong with his parents' marriage (it was his fault, after all), he wanted to make sure that Cyrus and Lina were doing OK, he wanted to help Jamie and Scarlette with their "situation," and he wanted to try and help Geoffrey, who seemed to be falling apart. But he was slowly learning that he had to focus on his own life and let everyone else worry about their own.
"Of course I will," he said. "You don't think I'm going to let you walk back there by yourself, do you? Mum would never forgive me."

Ama was happy to see her brother smiling. He was so happy these days and it made Ama grin. She jumped from her seat and latched onto him, hugging him tightly. "I love you Roland," she said. He had died, he had gone away and all Ama could think about was that she'd never see him again and tell him how much she loved him. She was going to make sure ALL her brothers, and her parents, and her entire family, knew how much she loved them.
Even grumpy Jamie.

It occurred to Roland that he had probably never told his sister that he loved her. He'd never been particularly good about expressing his emotions before, and he had hoped that they were just understood... proven by actions and not words. But Riley had changed him for the better. He was more open now, more expressive. The passion that had always smoldered inside was now closer to the surface and harder to bury.
"I love you too, kid," he said affectionately, squeezing her back.
He led her out of the restaurant and held her hand as they started walking back to the school. "Listen... about Jamie. He needs you, OK? Keep an eye on him."

When were her brothers going to get it in their head that they ALL needed her? She kept the comment to herself though and again tried one last time for a straight answer. "You're not going to tell me what's wrong with him, are you Roland?" she asked, slightly sad about it. She wished she wasn't out of the loop about everything.

Roland sighed. He didn't think Jamie was helping matters by keeping them secret. It was the same mistake Cyrus had made when he first found out Lina was pregnant. And their parents had probably learned from their mistake in handling thing with Cyrus the first time. He really thought they'd react differently this time. At least he hoped they would, for Jamie's sake. But waiting until Scarlette's pregnancy was further along just seemed like asking for trouble. Their parents would need more time to get used to the idea.
Ama was supposed to be the one closest to Jamie, and it didn't make sense that he would keep this from her. It was creating a distance between them.
"I wish I could tell you, Ama. It's not my secret to tell... he made me swear. But ask him. Make him talk to you."

It wasn't the answer she wanted, and she huffed a little. She could see the worry lines on Roland's face and she smiled a little, kissing his cheek. He was right, she knew, it wasn't his place to tell her Jamie's secret.
She was just hurt Jamie hadn't said anything himself.
"I'll ask him," Ama said as they reached the castle. "Thanks for the ice cream Roland, I'm glad you came," she smiled.

Roland had learned a lot from his "near death" experience. Although his family had always been the most important thing in his life, he somehow had failed to understand that he was just as important to them as they were to him. He understood that now, and he had resolved not to neglect them now that he had Riley in his life. He wanted to make sure they knew what they meant to him and that he was there for them... yet he also wanted to make sure he left them room to live their lives as they chose. So lunch with Amandine was just one step he needed to take.
"Jamie once told me that I had to allow him to make his own choices... even if they were mistakes. And as much as I want to interfere, I can't this time. But I do think he's making a mistake keeping it from you, of all people. Maybe you can make him change his mind."
He decided he would leave it at that, and he pulled his little sister into a warm hug. "You're welcome. You be careful, OK? I'll see you soon."

"I'll do my best," Ama said. "And that's a silly thing for Jamie to say, because I know him pretty well, and most of the time, his choices aren't that brilliant," she made a face and shrugged.
She held him tight, not wanting to let go. Lately, saying goodbye always felt like she'd never see a loved one again. After Roland's "death" Ama feared someone else would die on here and she wouldn't get to say goodbye properly. "I'll see you soon Roland," she finally said, pulling away. "Say hi to everyone for me, especially Riley!" she grinned and then turned to climb the steps into the castle.
