Roland laughed. “I suppose I deserve that,” he said. “After all, I did say ‘anything.’”
Ama always knew how to twist his words into what she wanted to hear. It was clever, but sneaky. And he fell for it every time, because of course, she was his only sister. How could he resist her? He was going to be in trouble when the baby came, especially if it was a girl. He just knew he was going to spoil her rotten.
Shrugging, he replied, “I should say no, and insist you order a proper meal. But… well, I won’t tell Mum if you won’t.”

"Yay!" Ama said with a grin. Another chance to manipulate what her brother said to get what she wanted, done!
Ama always had a way, when it came to Roland, Cyrus, and Jamie, of makeing things turn out the way she wanted them too, especially with Roland, who she knew could have a habbit of spoiling her just a tad. Ama knew it to be true, she was the baby sister after all.
"I won't tell Mum," she winked at him. "Okay, I know what I want. NOW can you tell me what your news is? It's killing me!"

Roland laughed again. He liked the look of breathless anticipation on her face and the way her eyes sparkled. He was tempted to tease her by keeping the secret from her a little longer, but in the end, he was really just too happy to keep her in suspense any longer.
“OK, OK, I’ll tell you. But first you have to promise me that you won’t tell anyone else yet. It’s not that it’s bad or anything… I just want to figure out the right way to tell everyone. I’m telling you because I know you can keep it a secret.”

Ama placed her menu down and folded her hands on the table, trying to take a deep breath to calm herself. All this secrecy just made Ama more anxious to hear what Roland had to tell her.
"Okay, I won't tell anyone," she said. She mimed zipping her lips closed. "I promise. I won't tell Jamie or Liam or Sheena or anyone." She WAS rather good at keeping secrets. It was her job, as the baby sister, to be nosey and know everything about everyone, especially if it was really good, like roland was letting on.

The look on her face made him want to laugh. She was trying to be serious, but it was pretty obvious that she was about to burst from curiosity.
He paused to take a drink from the glass of water on the table, just to torture her a little longer. “OK,” he said at last, assuming a serious expression that did not quite hide the smile on his face. “Riley and I went on a little vacation to her hometown in Portugal. While we were there, I asked her to marry me, and she said yes.”

Ama watched impaitently as Roland drew out her waiting. Finally he put his glass down and faced her with a look of seriousness. But Ama could still see that he was smiling about this bit of news.
When he finally said his news, that he and Riley were getting married, Amandine squeeled loud enough to grab attention from the entire resturant. "Ahhhh!" she jumped of her chair and hugged Roland tight. "I knew it I knew it I knew it!" She said happily, hugging him even tighter.

He couldn't help but smile at her reaction, which seemed to exactly mirror the happiness he was feeling himself. For a man who had once insisted that he never wanted to get married, he was happier than he could possibly describe. Riley changed everything for him, and made him feel complete.
He hugged his sister back fiercely. During the time when he had been staying in the safe house, Roland had been happy with Riley, but he had been unable to share that happiness with his family. As a result, sometimes it had felt unreal, like a wonderful dream that couldn't possibly be true. So it meant a lot to him that he could share his happiness with Ama.
"It probably won't be until after the baby is born," he said as he finally pulled back. "But Riley wants you to be in the wedding, and so do I."

"I get to be in the wedding?" Ama beamed. "Really!" She hugged Roland again and then went back to her chair, still smiling as wide as he was.
"Roland I'm so happy for you both," Ama said sincerely. "I knew you two loved each other," she said, a bit more to herself than to Roland.
"I have a question though," Ama siad. "How come you don't want anyone to know yet? And How come you chose to tell me?" That was the Ravenclaw in Ama, ever inquisitive.

"Of course you do," Roland replied. "I want you standing there with me, you know. You were the one who first gave me a push to do something about what I was feeling for her."
The more he thought about it, all of this had been inevitable all along. There had been something building between them from the start, and although they might have needed a small push, it most likely would have happened no matter what. There were just some things that you couldn't fight.
"It's not that I'm trying to hide it or anything. It's just... Well, Riley and I want to be the ones to tell everyone, together. I don't want it to be the kind of thing where it gets passed down through the family and everyone hears it from someone else. I want to announce it with Riley at my side, and we haven't figured out when a good time for it will be. But I had to tell someone, or I was going to explode. Riley's telling Geoffrey right now... and I kind of have a feeling that he won't be as excited about it as you are."

She smiled widely when Roland told her she was one of the reasons he was now with Riley. She liked the idea that she was part of the reason her brother was so terribly happy now. That's all she ever really wanted for her family, that they all be safe and happy. That, and that she got to know all their secrets first.
"It's good that you tell everyone yourself," Ama said. "You should tell Mum and Daddy next, I think, then Cy and Lena and Jamie last," she made a little face after mentioning Jamie. They still weren't talking.
The waitress came up to them. "I'm going to have an ice cream sunday," Ama grinned politely at the lady.

Roland grinned at the waitress. "I think I'll have one, too, actually. With hot fudge?" He shook his head as she finished taking their orders and walked away. "I was supposed to make this a proper lunch. Riley's going to yell at me when I tell her we just ate ice cream."
He was thoughtful as she suggested the order he should tell everyone in. He also didn't miss the way her expression darkened when Jamie was mentioned, and he let out a soft sigh. As it turned out, he wasn't the only one who had news to spread to the rest of the family, and it seemed that Jamie wasn't particularly anxious to start doing so.
"I was sort of thinking I might want to try and get everyone together and tell them all at once, actually. I mean, there's still Hayden and Uncle Judah and Aunt Suri, and... Well, you know. Not that I mind saying it over and over again, but it might be easier to do all at once."
He took a sip of water, then reached across the table to take her hand. "I take it that you and Jamie still aren't on the best of terms?"

"Ice cream is a real lunch!" Ama said. "It's just not as healty as some," she giggled. "Just tell Riley that there were bananas in it, that'll make it healthy." she smiled.
"Try getting everyone together all at once, I dare you," Ama siad. There were so many people in their family, what with blood relatives and significant others and family friends that were practically family, that it was a wonder they even got all together once a year for Christmas.
Their ice cream arived quickly (it really didn't take that long to make sundaies) as Roland asked about Jamie. Ama just shrugged and used her free hand to scoop herself a bit of ice cream.

There was no denying that he had a big family, and getting them all together was a bit of a production. But he was really just thinking of his parents and siblings, along with Uncle Judah, Aunt Suri, and Hayden, Liam, and Sheena. After all, the Malfoys were unlikely to join the party, and after the conversation he'd had with Christine and Riley's issues with Geoffrey, it didn't seem like they'd be likely to attend.
But he didn't say all of that. Instead, he chose to focus on Jamie. Usually, Ama and Jamie were very close. But since he'd returned--well, before that, but he hadn't been around to see it--there was a distance between them. And although Roland suspected that a big part of it had to do with Scarlette and the baby, he still felt partially responsible.
"Ama, don't give up on Jamie, OK? He needs you right now, he's just too stubborn to tell you that."

"It's been like this since..." she thought for a while. It had been like that since Roland died, actually. Jamie simply pulled away from everyone, secluding himself from people he loved. Ama had figured that, since Roland was alive now, that he would be his normal Jamie self. And in some ways he was, just not with her. "Since new years. I just miss the old Jamie," Ama frowned.
But she didn't want to spend her afternoon with Roland being sad about Jamie, so she switched topics to their other brother. "Hows Cyrus? Have you seen them lately?" Ama asked.

He pressed his lips together when she said "since New Years." He knew what that meant. She meant that Jamie had been this way since Roland's "death." Another pang of guilt stabbed at him, but he tried his best to ignore it. While for Ama it might have been pretty black and white, Roland was coming to understand that, for most people, the damage that had been done by his so-called death didn't quite go away just because they knew he was alive again.
But in Jamie's case, at least, there was more to the story than that. Jamie had another issue to deal with, and although Roland wanted to tell her that, the truth was, it was Jamie's secret to tell.
"I actually haven't seen Cyrus in a little while," Roland replied. "I just assume he and Lina and Mara are doing fine. I should probably stop over to visit them, but I'm afraid I'll blurt something out."

"Don't do that," she wagged her spoon at Roland. She could see it now. Everytime New Year's came up, she could see the guilt cross his eyes. "What happened happened Roland," she put her spoon down and sent a pointed look to her brother. "You did what you thought was best, and everything is better now," she said, smiling at him.
"I want to see everyone again soon," Ama siad as she turned back to the remains of her ice cream. "Maybe after you tell everyone? We could have a big congrats party or something," she said very lightheartedly.

It was a relief to know that at least one person was able to move past what happened. Ama saw things in a very simple, uncomplicated way, and it suddenly occurred to Roland that she was rather like him in that way. When he devised the plan originally, he had thought that, yes, they would be sad when they thought he was dead, but then everything would be OK again when he was able to come back. Amandine saw it this way, too. Even if she could see that Jamie had been different since it happened, she still believed that everything was fine again now that he was back. But Roland had come to realize that there were some things that couldn't just go away. His family had been hurt, his parents had grown distant from each other, Geoffrey had been cursed... these were things that didn't just vanish now that he was back. His "death" had had repercussions that he had never imagined, and they weren't reversed so easily.
Would Amandine still think everything was OK if she knew that he had faked it? That he'd done it intentionally? Or would she be angry with him?
Their ice cream arrived, and Roland pushed these thoughts from his mind. "I wouldn't mind having a little congratulations party after we've spread the word," he replied. "It's too bad Riley and I can't have it at our place, but that apartment is definitely too small to have the whole family over. I need to see about getting a house."

Ama saw most of the world in black in white. There wasn't a lot of grey for her fourteen year old mind. When Roland had "died" everything was bad. She would cry all the time, she wouldn't talk to her friends, she and Jamie would fight.... but now that she was happy, happy that things were starting to go back to normal, she just assumed that everything WAS going back to normal, and it would be just like before this whole ordeal happened. Except, that Roland was now getting married and having a baby and Jamie and Ama weren't talking.
"A house?" Ama asked. "Well, good point, you and Riley and baby definatly can't fit in your apartment. It's tiny," Ama giggled. "Where were you and Rileythinking?" Ama was curious. Would he live near her parent's house? Far away? Would she be able to visit?

Roland chuckled. "Don't forget about the dog," he added. "That makes four of us in that little apartment. So yeah,,, it's going to be pretty cramped."
He hesitated when she asked where they were thinking of moving. He couldn't tell her about the safe house... not until he was sure about it, anyway. He'd need to come up with an explanation of how they found out about the house, and it didn't seem necessary until he even knew if it was a possibility.
"Oh, I don't know... we haven't really even started looking yet. We have to figure out what we can afford."

"Oh right, the dog," Ama grinned. "Well you've just got yourself the perfect little family, don't you?" Ama teased slightly. She was so happy fro her brothers. Both Roland and Cyrus were getting their lives together. Even Jamie, sour as she was about him, seemed happy when he was with Scarlette.
"Moving will be fun," Ama said. She only had a couple scoops of her ice cream left, so she paused for a while. "You can make it all your own from the beginning."
