"I can teach you what little bit I know," he offered. "It's nothing fancy but it helps me get by." Austin grinned at her.
"My songs are about different things really. I write some songs about people, some songs about emotions, sometimes they are songs about my emotions for people, although I haven't written one of those in a while. Just a few different things." Austin gave a shrug. There were a few songs that were sort of angry type songs, like when people told him he couldn't do something, in order to vent, he came up with one song but it didn't sound right acoustically. He needed more instruments to make it sound right.
"It's not really anything special. When I get bored I attempt to write a song or two but then I get frustrated most of the time because I can't think of words to finish it. I have a lot of unfinished songs and it bothers me to no end."

Paige found herself blushing at the idea of him showing her how to cook. It all sounded so very.... domestic. Which was odd, considering that they hadn't slept together or even properly kissed yet. Of course the words "I love you" were pretty much unthinkable for Paige. She had only said them once, and they had not been returned. As far as Paige was concerned, love didn't exist. Maybe two people could find contentment together; a mutual respect and caring. But love was a myth.
"And I could teach you how to be organized," she teased. If there was one thing she was good at, it was keeping things neat.
She wondered about these songs that he wrote. She couldn't quite imagine writing a song about her emotions, but then she always tried her best to hide her emotions; to bury them deep inside like something ugly and shameful. If she showed too much emotion, allowed herself to feel too deeply, the chances were too great that she would get hurt.
"Would you write a song for me?" she teased.

"Me teaching you to cook while you teach me to be organized, that sounds like a fair arrangement." Austin laughed. He wouldn't even know how to begin to organize his things. In different folders he kept the songs that had a similar theme but he didn't even have anything to put it in to be organized. It was going to be a hopeless case considering everything he had.
Paige's question, even though it was teasing, caught Austin off guard for a moment. He didn't have a quick response that he usually would. Eye contact was broken for a moment, then he looked back up to her. "Well, I could tell you that there is at least one in the works." There was an almost shy like tone to his voice. There was a song that he was trying to finish since the first time he ever met her, but he was exactly going to spill that.

Paige blushed at this. She had only been teasing, of course, and wasn't serious about him writing a song for her. Not that he would be the first guy to write a song about her. There had been another, who was also a musician... but he was the pretentious sort who wrote suggestive lyrics with thinly-veiled innuendo. The song about her had been rather vulgar, and she had been sort of disgusted by it. He was just another guy who saw her as a sexual object and not as a person with feelings.
But Austin was not like that. He was interested in her thoughts and feelings and her life, all things no guy had ever cared about before. She still didn't know what to make of that.
"I was teasing," she said with a shy smile. "You don't have to write me a song."

Austin's brighter smile reappeared. "I know, but it was already started. I just haven't been able to finish it yet because I'm looking for the right way to." The song itself was no where near vulgar. It was more about how Paige was a great girl and she didn't fully see it. It described her in the way he saw her and how he wished she saw her. The more he got to know her the more he had an idea on how to continue it.
"It might take me a little longer to write an ending will do justice to the song, but I think you'll like it."

He was too good. That was the thought that wouldn't leave her mind as she looked up at him. He was too good for her, and he deserved some sweet, uncomplicated girl without a past. He deserved better than her. She wasn't sweet... in fact, sometimes she could be an absolute b*tch. She was a mess. Sometimes she was mean and snobbish, sometimes she could be hard-nosed and stubborn... but it all covered up the fact that she was actually a complete basket case. And she just kept wondering when he was going to get close enough to realize all of that.
"That's really sweet," she said softly, a hint of sadness in her voice. She was really going to miss him when the inevitable happened. Even though she kept telling herself not to get too attached, it wasn't as easy as it sounded.

Austin studied Paige's face. She sometimes worn more emotion on her face than she probably realized. The sound in her voice had changed and there was something that was hinted there. Blame his analyzing mind on his song writing. Everything had meaning, everything.
He reached out and took her smaller hands into his larger ones. "What's wrong?" It hadn't even crossed his mind what could really be going on in Paige's. However, the look in her eyes and the sound of her voice, that led him to believe that something was going on in her head and he wanted to know what it was to see if he could change her expression to the smile that made his stomach feel strange every time she smiled.

She probably should have told him right then that she was not good enough for him. The words were on the tip of her tongue, but she couldn't bring herself to say them. It felt good to have someone look at her the way he did. He looked at her like she was pretty and special and interesting and she liked that. And she wanted to be good enough for him so badly that it almost hurt.
"It's nothing," she said, forcing the sad look from her eyes and pasting on a smile. "I was just wondering if you had anything else planned for this evening?"

He knew that there was something there but he wasn't going to get it out of her, not yet anyway. Austin would try to get her to tell him before they parted for the night. Instead of pestering for the moment, he went along with her change in topic. He knew that she had three different smiles, so far. This was one of those three. From before he had seen the smile that she had plastered on her face. That was one of her fake smiles just to try to continue on.
"Well, I didn't have anything extremely specific in mind," he said. "Do you have anything in mind?"

For Paige, this was that moment where her instinct told her to turn on her best seductive charms. They'd had a nice date, they were getting along well, and it felt like now was the time to let him know she was interested. Any other guy, and she knew they would be on their way to her apartment in no time.
But Austin confused her. Whenever she tried to kiss him, he seemed to push her away. Most guys liked when a girl made the first move. Austin didn't seem like the macho type who would insist on being the one to make a move. But he didn't want her to kiss him. It confused her.
So maybe she would try to be a little more subtle. "We could go back to my place for a drink," she suggested, her smile turning flirtatious.

Okay, Paige had about four different smiles. This was one that said she was thinking about something, and it was also one of the ones that always made Austin's stomach feel strange. He wasn't thinking exactly what she was thinking, in terms of what the underlying meaning of going back to her apartment for a drink.
Raising an eyebrow, Austin gave a shrug. "I think I can do that." He gave her a smile. He was going to walk her home anyway, so a drink wouldn't hurt, would it?

Of course, in Paige's world, going over to one's apartment for a "drink" meant a little more than just a drink. Oh, there would be drinks. But it was supposed to lead to more than that, and when he accepted, she thought that meant he was ready.
"OK, then," she said, taking one last bite of ice cream, which was now mostly melted into a thick, milky soup. "Let's get out of here. Thanks for this, though. No one ever takes me out for ice cream."

"I'm not just anyone," he said widening his smile. "And besides, I like ice cream. We'll do this more often." Of course Austin was going to fight to see her more often. Still not thinking too much of anything, he stood up and offered her his hand.
"Plus there's a few other places I'd like to take you to sometime." Sure, he was planning ahead, but he wanted her to know that he was interested more in her than she might have though.
Austin started to lead her out of the ice cream parlor and back in the direction of her apartment building.

No, you're not just anyone, Paige thought to herself. No other guy had ever looked at her the way he did, and no other guy made her feel the way she did. Merlin, it was terrifying.
As they walked out of the ice cream parlor, Paige found herself slipping her hand into his. For a moment, she felt light and innocent, like she was the kind of girl who just held hands and didn't kiss on the first date. She had never been that girl, never even thought she wanted to be that girl.
"Oh, really?" she said playfully. "Like where? The moon and the stars?"

There was a smile that spread across Austin's face as Paige slipped her hand into his. He welcomed her smaller hand and closed his fingers around it. He glanced up at the sky as she mentioned the moon and stars. "I would really take you there if we wouldn't die from lack of oxygen." He looked back down at her and grinned.
"No, it's just some other places I had in mind, on Earth that is." He winked at her. "And I can't tell you what they are until we go out on another date. You'll just have to wait and find out and be surprised." The Observatory was one of the places he thought about taking her, and maybe a few other small places.

Paige giggled. Merlin, she sounded like a silly schoolgirl. He had such a curious effect on her.
"Another date?" she said, nudging him playfully. "Well, you presume quite a lot, don't you? You haven't even asked me out on a second date. And how can you know I'll even say yes?"
She was better at this, the teasing, the flirting. It was so much easier to play than to be serious. This way she could hide behind a mask and there would be less chance he would see the ugliness underneath.
But then, he now knew what she thought was one of her ugliest secrets, and he was still here. He wanted to go on a second date with her. No matter what happened tonight, he was promising a second date, making plans for the future. Oh, Godric, she hoped it wasn't just lies to get into her pants.

"I suppose it seems I do presume a lot," he said giving her a mysterious like glance. "However, unknown to you, I already know that you'll give in. You've said yes to me twice now. I believe our lunch counts for something, don't you? And I know you're very curious as to where I will take you, so I believe that is another reason you'll say yes. Then there's the completely obvious reasons, you do have some fun and you sort of like me. Even if it is just a wee bit."
Austin winked at her. "So would you like to go on another date with me the next night you are available?"

Paige pretended to think about it very carefully. "Hmmm," she said in an exaggerated tone. "I might be pretty busy for a while, you know... stories to investigate, people to interview... and I do have to wash my hair..."
She smiled up at him, feeling suddenly shy. The thought crossed her mind that she would do almost anything if he asked her to, but she pushed it away as quickly as she could. She had learned a long time ago not to give any man that much power over her. It was only inviting him to break her heart. Oh, Merlin, please be gentle with me, she thought.
"But I think maybe I can make the time," she said at last.

"I'm really glad that you will fit me into your schedule." Austin winked at her. "After all, I have really had a good time taking you out. I enjoy your company and would hate to see you just disappear." For the first time in a while, Austin was ready to continue on with dates. Paige was the girl, from the time he first met her, knew he wanted to take her out and make her feel like she was extremely important. He couldn't pick a word that described how he felt about her, but he knew that like wasn't exactly a strong enough word. The word 'like' seemed to bland.
"I hope you've been having a good time and not been too bored."

Well, aside from that awkward moment when she tried to kiss him during the movie and he stopped her, she'd had a great time. Why had he done that again? It couldn't be because he didn't want her, right? After all, he was still here, and he wanted to see her again. And he'd agreed to go back to her apartment for "drinks."
Maybe he had just felt self-conscious about doing it in public. She had been with guys who had aversions to public displays of affection before; of course, those were the guys who almost never took her out at all. Now that she thought about it, it seemed like that might have just been an excuse.
"I'm not too bored," she replied with a smile. "I'm having a good time."
