"Glad you like surprises. I can be full of them." He gave her another grin. That last comment wasn't him being full of himself, it was just an honest statement. Knowing that Paige liked surprises gave him another way to attempt to show her that he liked her and wasn't just going to use her for personal gain.
"Well, I didn't fully decide on what movie we should see. I was stuck and didn't know if you wanted to see a horror movie or a more girly type movie. I thought that I would ask you your opinion for which one you would rather see."

Movies were tough. Paige liked girly movies, but most guys did not. Austin might be different, but she wasn't sure she was ready for romantic movies with him yet. That seemed more a thing that should wait until later in the relationship. Like after they'd had sex.
Paige wouldn't admit it, but it sort of bothered her that he hadn't even kissed her yet. Sure, he could flirt and say sweet things and bring her flowers. But Paige, unfortunately didn't believe in words. She believed in actions, and she equated sex with relationships. And she believed that love was a fictional thing, a fantasy made up for movies and books and songs. But it didn't exist in the real world, which was cold and hard.
So what did it mean if Austin hadn't kissed her yet?
Horror movies, however, they were different. When she got scared, she could cling to him, and things could get romantic that way. Maybe that could solve the problem of no kissing. "Something scary might be good," she replied at last.

There were two reasons Austin had yet to kiss Paige. One reason was he remembered the night she forced herself on him. Sure, some guys would have liked that but Austin didn't want her to do that, he didn't want to just sleep with her because she was willing to offer herself to him. The other reason was that he knew the moment he kissed her, she would probably want to take it to another level. He wanted her to understand that he wasn't going to treat her like she had been before.
He was taking it slow and so far the night was going fairly well. Austin wouldn't have cared which one she picked. "Something scary hm," he asked her teasingly. "We could see Psycho. I know that is playing again at the theater, although its been out for a while now. They play older movies sometimes, which is why I like this theater. Have you see that it?"

Paige had never had anyone "take it slow" with her before. She didn't really think guys still did those sorts of things anymore. It was the 70s, after all, not the 50s. Those sorts of antiquated ideals about relationships, like not kissing on the first date, were things of the past. If a boy wanted her, then they slept together. No one had ever wanted to wait before, and she couldn't quite comprehend that what Austin was doing was out of respect to her, because he genuinely cared for her.
He was being so sweet, and such a gentleman, but Paige still fully expected that this would change later on in the evening. He was just trying to "seal the deal," right?
"Psycho sounds good," she said. "I haven't seen it yet... will you hold me if I get scared?"

They were slowly climbing again and he hoped that it was going to work out. Austin knew that he was pretty persistant and he would be that way toward Paige if she continued to think like before. He wasn't going to give up because he had hope that maybe things would change and she would see that he did like her and he didn't just want her for the heck of it.
Hearing Paige's question, Austin wondered for a second but a sudden thought told him that it would be alright. "Yes, I'll hold you if you get scared." Maybe that wasn't going to be a good thing, but he couldn't deny her question then and there could he? He was going to see how this went, after all he was trying to take small steps. "But it is a good movie," he said smiling. "Maybe you'll like it."

If he'd said no, Paige really would have started doubting herself. After all, the whole point (as far as Paige was concerned) of seeing a scary movie while on a date was so that the guy could hold you when things got scary. If he didn't want to hold her, then she surely would have thought that there was something wrong with her.
"Maybe I will," she said. "I've seen some of Hitchcock's stuff, actually. Um... North by Northwest I saw, and The Birds. That one... really freaked me out. I freaked out whenever I got an owl for weeks after that. Sometimes I still do, actually."

"Haven't seen North by Northwest, but I did see The Birds. That movie was pretty freaky. Makes you wonder a little, but it was one of my favorites." He smiled and took her hand. Holding her hand was alright for now. Austin wasn't going to tease her about being freaked out about seeing The Birds.
"I will warn you, this movie is a little creepy but it's not too bad." The walk to the theater didn't take too long. Once there, Austin requested their movie tickets and paid. "I believe we should get popcorn," he said looking back to her with a smile. "What do you want to drink?"

"Oh, well, I had to see North by Northwest... I always see everything with Cary Grant in it," Paige replied, smiling. "I can't help it, I have the biggest crush on him. He's just so suave and dashing... I cried when I heard he was retiring."
She blushed and gave a little giggle. She didn't admit to just anyone about her crush on Cary Grant, and she hoped Austin wouldn't feel weird about it. Everyone had their silly celebrity crushes, after all, didn't they? To her, Cary Grant was sort of this fantasy guy, the charming, handsome gentleman who knew how to sweep a woman off her feet. But she didn't believe guys like that really existed. At least, not until now.
As they walked into the movie theater, she watched Austin quietly. He was certainly good at playing the gentleman. he seemed calm and self-assured, and she had to admit... it was attractive.
"Popcorn sounds good," she said. "And to drink... I guess a root beer would be good."
She would probably exercise extra later to work off the empty calories of the soda, but movie theaters didn't usually sell bottles of water, and there was no such thing as a sugar-free soda.

"Cary Grant hm," Austin asked interested. He smiled at her. Maybe things were going to go smoothly. He was learning a little more about her the more they spent together. Austin wasn't sure if she was purposefully letting him know a few things or if they just sort of slipped out as it related in some way or another to their conversation.
"Rootbeer it is." Austin turned to the man working behind the counter and ordered a tub of popcorn and two rootbeers.
"I believe we're ready to go see the movie, if you don't need anything else."

Paige was eying the box of little chocolate non-pareils. It was something she knew she shouldn’t have. She loved chocolate, but she had to avoid it at all costs if she wanted to maintain her figure. Besides, she had learned a long time ago that boys didn’t like girls to eat too much while on dates. Girls were supposed to pick at their food, and act like they didn’t want it. As it was, she was already going to eat popcorn and drink rootbeer, both of which were fattening. And who knew what he had planned after this?
Tearing her eyes away from the chocolate, she smiled at him. “No, that should be plenty,” she said.

It was really more attractive when a girl ate more. So what if she ate a lot? Just picking at the food sort of meant that they didn't really want to be there on the date, or that they didn't want to go to dinner, at least that what it meant to Austin. It made him feel more comfortable when the girl would actually eat.
"Alright then." He gave her one more smile and then headed in the direction of the theater. "Which section do you like better to sit in? The middle, or closer to the back?" Austin hated sitting up front in a movie, it was just usually uncomfortable. He didn't really like to sit in the very back either, but he would let Paige decide where they would sit.

Unfortunately, Paige had struggled for a very long time with unhealthy eating habits. It had started when she was a teenager and Paige had been feeling horribly inadequate next to her blonde, naturally skinny twin. She began to starve herself. She also became interested in dance, and she began to study it seriously out of school. It only got worse when she was a dancer; she would starve herself, and occasionally she would get so desperate for fattening foods, so she would go on an eating binge and make herself sick. It had even been a contributing factor in the injury that took out her knee and rendered her unable to dance anymore. The doctor had said she was undernourished and that it weakened her joints. She'd had to stay in the hospital for a while until they could get her to eat again.
She was mostly better now, but sometimes she still looked at food as the enemy. She couldn't eat too much of the so-called "bad" foods, and if she did, she would just have to exercise more later.
Austin would never understand that. He would think she was weird or crazy or sick. And what did it matter, ultimately? It wasn't like she still did it anymore.
At that moment, she wasn't thinking about any of this, but her mind was still back on that chocolate. It was definitely on the list of "bad" foods that she could not have, especially since she was already having a soda. But Merlin, she wanted it.
Luckily, Austin drew her attention away from the chocolate, and was asking her where she wanted to sit. Surveying the theater, she spotted a couple of seats close to the center of the theater. "Right there," she said, pointing.

If Paige had mentioned chocolate, Austin would have gone back and gotten it for her. That wouldn't have been no problem at all.
He grabbed Paige's hand and led her toward the middle of the row. Austin sat the popcorn on his knee once he sat down. There wasn't anyone else in the theater at the moment. He hoped that it would stay that way.
Austin thought about going ahead and putting his arm on the back of Paige's chair but he decided to wait instead. He didn't want her to think that he was rushing something.
"Well we made it just in time," he said as the previews started.

Paige's eyes weren't on the screen as the previews started up. Instead, she was eying him, wondering once again just what his goals were for this date. By the looks of him, he was actually planning on watching the movie. Usually, when she went to the movies with a guy, they wound up doing anything but watching the movie. She'd been thrown out of quite a few movie theaters for inappropriate behavior. But something told her that this would not be happening this time. She just couldn't understand why.
She didn't say anything, but she reached over and took a handful of popcorn from the bucket. "Remember you promised to hold me if I got scared," she teased lightly.

Out of the corner of his eye, Austin could see Paige looking at him. He watched the previews for a few moments. That was the plan, to actually watch the movie. Austin wanted to show Paige that all relationships didn't evolve around sex. There was more to a relationship than just that. He actually like her and he wanted to get to know her better. He wanted her to finally realize that there was another side to the coin.
Her voice caused him to look at her. There was a smile that tugged upward on the left corner of his mouth. "I will," he said assumedly. "You'll be safe from whatever scares you, promise."

What if what I'm scared of is you? Paige thought to herself.
He offered such promise and it was at once tempting and terrifying. She had fallen for men's promises before and come up empty-handed. But Austin was different, she knew it in her bones. He offered so much more, and strangely, the most terrifying thing was that he might actually deliver on those promises.
She was used to keeping her emotions in check. All business, all ambition... that was where she felt safe. But thanks to him, those emotions that had been bottled up so tightly were starting to break free. If she let him in, she wouldn't be able to hold those emotions back anymore, and she'd just be an emotional wreck.
With all these thoughts running through her mind at a thousand miles a minute, it was nearly impossible to concentrate on the movie that was starting up in front of her.

He would deliver on his promises, there was no denying that. Austin was still trying to think of a good way to show her that he liked her and that she didn't have to doubt him. Plus, he wanted to know more about her. Although, he was not going to push her in order to find out something she didn't want him to know. He hoped that it would come in time.
His thoughts were all over the place too and he wasn't really focusing on the movie at the moment either. Austin put his arm around the back of Paige's chair. It wasn't a big gesture, just something small. He didn't think too much of it considering it wasn't something huge.

Piage was familiar with this particular gesture. Of course, most guys would then wrap an arm around her and pull her close to them. But Austin continued to be a perfect gentleman. She glanced over at him, then leaned back so that her head was leaning against his arm.
She still felt confused, and yet strangely relaxed. There was something about Austin that drew her in, made her feel safe. It would be very easy to fall in love with him, if she would let herself. But everytime she thought about taking a step closer to the edge, she got panicked about the feeling of having nothing beneath her feet. If she fell for him she would fall hard, and she didn't know how to trust that she wouldn't get hurt.
Sighing to herself, she reached over to take a handful of popcorn from the bucket on his lap. When she was stresed, she ate... a habit she had tried very hard to break.

If she would let him, he would catch her if she jumped off the edge. He wouldn't hurt her but then again Paige didn't know that. Whatever was going to happen was going to happen in time. All good things came in time if you were patient enough and Austin learned how to be patient.
Austin adjusted the popcorn in his lap so that it would be easier for her to reach into the bucket. Although he was tense a few seconds ago because he wasn't sure how she would register his arm being on the back of the chair, now he completely relaxed. Paige seemed like she was a little relaxed. He looked over to her and gave a smile before looking back toward the screen.

The popcorn was good, but she was still regretting not having the chocolate. Of course, she would have regretted it if she did have the chocolate, too, but for entirely different reasons.
As she reached for more popcorn, she glanced over at him almost enviously. It seemed like it would be so much easier being a guy. Men didn't have to worry as much about what they ate or how much weight they gained. They would still get respect from people, they would still get women. But if she gained weight, she was firmly of the opinion that no one would even look at her twice.
Why couldn't she just turn her mind off and enjoy the movie? It felt sort of nice, just sitting there with his arm behind her chair. And physically, she was starting to relax, even if her mind was still going. She just wished she knew how to stop worrying about everything and have a good time.
