"N-no. You didn't do anything wrong," he said trying to reassure her that there was nothing wrong with her. Hayden just wasn't expecting anything like this. He was caught off guard and that didn't happen very often. Plus, there was something that was telling him not to carry on with what was going on. He couldn't describe the feeling exactly.
"It's just I-I wasn't excepting this," he said. Hayden felt completely out of his element at the moment. "You didn't do anything wrong."

Nathalia was still straddling his lap, but sitting up more, clearly confused, even if she did try and hide it.
He wasn't out and out telling her to stop, but all the signs were there. So what, he was letting her down gently? What was that about?
Her shoulders fell a little. "And you don't... want it," she assumed, saying it as more of a statement than a question, and she pulled away from him and off the couch. She needed to get away from him. She didn't like the look in his eyes. She didn't know how to handle being told no.

For Hayden, this was fairly new. This didn't happen to him a whole lot. He felt his heart drop to his feet when her shoulders fell. He didn't mean to make her feel like that. Now he felt horrible for saying no, but something was telling him to say it.
"I just, I wasn't expecting..." Hayden shook his head in confusion. As Nathalia started to move away from him, he didn't know what to do. "Nathalia," he started to say as he stood up.

Wasn't expecting? What could he have been expecting instead? He came up to her apartment, and he seemed savvy enough to know what happened when you went up to a girl's apartment. She was trying to figure out where she went wrong, and she just didn't know. She didn't know how to salvage this, either.
When he stood up, Nathalia took a step back, her eyes meeting his as he said her name. What did he want from her?
"You should go, probably." As soon as she said it, she wanted to tell him not to go, but she pulled her lip between her teeth to stop herself.

"I'm sorry," he said. "I wasn't expecting any of this." Hayden never thought that him coming up to her apartment would led to something like this. His thoughts were elsewhere and it blocked him from even thinking about this. Had things been different, he would have realized what was going on when he first got there. He probably wouldn't be in her apartment if things were different.
"Nathalia, I, you didn't do anything wrong." Hayden wanted her to know that it was alright. He didn't move from where he was standing. Something told him to stay. He wanted to make things right, to make sure that she was okay. He felt bad for what just happened and he wanted to attempt to make it right, if he could."

Nathalia was torn, unsure what to do with him. She just asked him to leave, and he was still standing there.
If she was any other kind of girl, she would lash out, but she wasn't, and she didn't. "What do you want from me, Hayden?" she asked, figuring that she was going to be confused until she got a straight answer from him. But then, she couldn't help but ask, "Why don't you want me? I don't... understand."
She pulled her lip between her teeth, feeling awkward and out of her element, and she couldn't meet his eyes.

"I just needed someone to talk to and you listened." Figuring that that wouldn't be a good statement to just leave out there, Hayden continued. "I walked you home after you got off and then you invited me in here. I didn't think about this." He didn't know what to say to make things okay. He could tell that Nathalia was hurt. She wouldn't even look at him. Not sure what to really do, Hayden took a step toward her.
"And it's not anything about me not wanting you. It's not that. I just, I didn't think about things going to this. Everything else has been filling my mind. I've just been confused about different things and I've been trying to sort them out." He ran a hand through his hair. "Nathalia, I didn't mean to hurt you, I really didn't."

She wanted to scream at him to leave. Why wasn't he leaving? She felt like she was in a complete panicked mode, and she didn't know what to do. If he came too close, she'd fight him, more than likely. She was like a ferrel cat at the moment, and it scared her.
"Because I listened?" she repeated, her brows creasing. What was she supposed to do with him?
"Hayden, look, it's fine, okay. I misread you. I... you should just go. Please go."

The situation was clear now and Hayden felt even worse for it. He didn't mean for anything to happen but it did. If he weren't trying to apologize and everything, his face would have been red.
Even though Nathalia was telling him to leave, Hayden didn't make a move for the door. He knew it wasn't okay and he didn't know what he could do to make it right. "Nat," he said, "I didn't mean for you to misread my actions and its partially my fault that you did. I wasn't thinking of the consequences of coming up here or anything. I'm sorry."

Nathalia realized that he wasn't going to leave while she was all worked up, and she took a deep breath. It wasn't that she was embarassed that she misread his actions. She was hurt. No one ever denied her, and she didn't know how to react now that someone did.
Did that mean Hayden didn't want her? That he wasn't interested at all? She couldn't help but ask, because she had to know- or she'd be thinking about it forever.
"I don't understand. You think I'm pretty, don't you?"

"Of course I think you're pretty," he said honestly. Hayden couldn't wrap his head around the reason why Nathalia thought that he might want to have a night with her. Yes, she was very pretty, but that didn't mean he just wanted to have a night with her. Hayden didn't really work that way.
Knowing that he had to choose his words wisely, he took a moment to find the right words. "I don't really do one nighters," he admitted. "And I really didn't think any of the consequences of my actions and I apologize. I didn't want anything like this to happen in the way it did."

Nat faltered. She just didn't get it. She was used to a formula. You flirt in a bar, you think someone's pretty, you go home with them, you sleep with them. He did everything but what the equation equaled out to, and she didn't know what else was supposed to happen. Nathalia, clearly, had never quite been treated properly.
"I just... I don't know what you did expect to happen. I'm sorry, I just..." her eyes finally moved back to his as she fished for the right way to finish this thought. She had nothing, really. She didn't even know what she was trying to say.

"I just expected to walk out feeling a little less confused about what was going," he answered truthfully. "I was looking for someone to talk to and you talked to me. That's what I was expecting. I didn't know where else to go. It was actually by chance I ended up at Stu's. I knew there were good drinks there, so I went. You don't have the watered down stuff."
Hayden sighed. "Don't apologize." He didn't know how to make up for the confusion. "I should be the one apologizing. You're a great girl Nathalia, you really are. You're very pretty, a great listener, smart, and funny. I'm sorry that I led you to think something that I didn't mean to."

Her brows furrowed. She was a great girl? But obviously she wasn't great enough. Or even good enough. She had to bite her lip to keep from voicing this. There was a disconnect here, and she felt like they were running in circles.
"Yeah, okay. That's fine," she blurted out at last, trying to get them away from this topic. Trying to get him to leave, even, without just shoving him out the door. "Did you want more coffee, or....?"
This time, when she asked, at least she wasn't implying sex afterwards, right?

"Nathalia," Hayden sighed heavily. She wasn't understanding what he was trying to tell her. He didn't know how to tell her without it sounding like he was being mean. It was starting to become frustrating to attempt to tell her and he ran out of ways trying to explain.
Now that he had his thoughts about him, Hayden could see more clearly. "I'm okay on coffee, thank you. Maybe you can offer that again some other time?" It wasn't a promise or hopeful statement for what she wanted to offer him tonight. It was just a question that he hoped she understood was a gesture that he wouldn't mind seeing her again in a way that she didn't just offer herself to him.

Nathalia's eyes met his again when he suggested she offer him coffee another time. She almost laughed. What was he trying to tell her? She didn't really know. That maybe another time, he'd want to hook up? Or that all he was interested in with her was coffee? And guys thought girls were confusing. Nathalia didn't know what to do with him or the situation.
But she also knew, without a doubt, that she would not be seeking him out again. No, she had too much pride for that. So if he wanted to see her again, he'd have to make the effort and come into Stu's or find her wherever.
But nonetheless, she replied with, "Okay. Maybe I will. And I'm sorry about all of this. Maybe... maybe you should go, now?"

He still didn't have a very good feeling about the situation. If only he would have just thought about a few things, they wouldn't have had that confusion. Hayden wasn't going to plainly ask her to dinner after this. The thought bounced around for a moment but right now was completely the wrong time to ask that. Maybe he would get up enough courage for a later time, and he would go to her to ask. Hayden was smart enough to know that much.
Placing his hands in his pockets, he knew it was probably a good time to take his leave. There wasn't much else he could do. "I'm sorry too," he replied. Hayden started to go but turned back to face Nathalia. "I'll see you sometime soon Nathalia." He gave her a friendly smile and reached for the door.

Nathalia didn't realize it just then, but Hayden was doing and being everything she wanted. Just a couple months back, she showed up on Roland's doorstep and told him she wanted some guy who wouldn't want her just for her sexy, flirty nature, but would stay with her. Not in those exact words, but wasn't Hayden doing just that?
"Yeah. I'll see you."
It was halfhearted, and Nathalia didn't think they would ever see each other again. As he left the apartment, she was left with an empty, lonely feeling in her stomach, and she stayed rooted in her spot in the kitchen, arms folded over her chest as she tried to figure out where to go from there.
