"Well, it's a lot different than Auror training, I'll tell you that," Kole said. "But it's still quite hectic, but I can handle it," Kole added.
"I should probably go talk to others, before I get labled as the freek who hides in the corner," Kole laughed. "It was nice to see you again Riley, nice to meet you Roland," Kole nodded at them both and then walked off.

Times had been different. A heavy cloud had seemed to hang over the auror department for awhile. Fabian hated to see the way Riley was but he was unsure about approaching her. Even after the news of Roland being alive, Fabian was unsure if he should go see him or her. It was just one of those things that would have been extremely awkward.
Hearing about the party, he knew that he should go. It would be weird if he didn't, after all, all the other aurors were going to be there. Taking a deep breath, Fabian arrived at the party. He knew that tonight the possibility of running into Roland and Riley would be inevitable. When he did, he would put the past behind him. It should be a new beginning, right?

When Kole had walked away, Roland smiled and turned to Riley. "Well, that wasn't so hard," he said. "have we been social enough now?"
His tone was teasing, however, and he was already turning around to scan the room to see who else they should talk to. "So, who's the guy talking to Ted and Andromeda?" he asked, though he was fairly certain that she had already mentioned his name.
Before she could answer, however, Roland caught sight of a familiar figure walking through the door. It was Fabian Prewett, and Roland's breath caught in his throat. "This could be... awkward," he said, nudging Riley lightly.

Fabian thought about delaying running into Riley and Roland for a little while but when his eyes looked around to see who was there, his eyes stopped on Roland. He was looking back. So much for wanting to delay.
Knowing that the situation would be pretty awkward, Fabian put on a brave face and walked over to them. Maybe the sooner he spoke to them, the quicker any awkwardness would disappear.
Stopping in front of the couple, Fabian put on a light smile. "Roland, Riley, it's good to see you two." That was a good greeting, right?

Riley said goodbye to Kole, and her eyes turned to Ted and Andromeda. Ted had noticed her and gave her a little wink, so she'd have to make sure to go say hello to them. "That's Kevin Flanagan. He's a transfer from Ireland. Really nice."
When Roland nudged her, she looked up at him, and then followed his gaze to the door, where her eyes landed on Fabian Prewett. By then, he was already coming towards them.
Riley smiled.
It had been a long time since she'd spoken to Fabian... nearly a month and a half, two months? She didn't know. And she missed him. Just because she ended up with Roland didn't mean that she wanted Fabian out of her life. When he said hello, Riley looked at him for a moment before she gently put her arms around him and hugged him.

Roland pressed his lips together and stood back slightly while Riley hugged Fabian. He couldn't help it; he still felt a tiny spark of jealousy at seeing her with him. How could he not? Riley had once stubbornly insisted that she preferred Fabian over him. And if he was honest with himself, Roland knew that he had kind of unfairly made moves on Riley while she was supposedly seeing Fabian. Hadn't he promised that he would step out of the way and not do anything about the feelings he was having for her? But there had just been something between them that wouldn't be denied. It was powerful and unstoppable, and Roland simply couldn't bring himself to feel guilty about it. But he was sorry if Fabian had been hurt by it.
He caught Fabian's eye and gave a casual "man-nod" in his direction. "How's it going, Fabian?" he said, for once choosing to use the man's first name instead of his last name.

Riley's hug took him a little by surprise. It would be rude just to stand there with his arms by his side, plus he had missed her. Fabian reached his arms up and gently wrapped them around her returning her hug. It felt awkward hugging her in front of Roland.
Fabian pulled away and smiled. "Glad to see that you're doing alright." That statement was for the both of them, however, it was more directed toward Riley. He returned the nod to Roland. "It's going, can't really complain. It's good to see you back with us, that's for sure."

Riley felt bad, because she knew Roland would be jealous of that hug. But she couldn't help it. It had been so long since she had even spoken to Fabian, and he was a great guy. She didn't know where things stood between them, but she hoped they could salvage something out of it.
But when she pulled back, she took Roland's hand again and gave it a gentle squeeze... a silent promise that she was his. "Thank you, Fabian," she said, feeling guilty about how things had happened between them. "It's nice to see you again."

Roland was still amazed sometimes when she kept coming back to him, choosing him. He wasn't sure he deserved it, but he knew better than to question it. Riley loved him, and he couldn't have been more grateful for that fact.
"Thanks, Fabian," Roland replied. "It's good to be back."
He didn't say anything else, and let Riley take control of the situation for now. She knew Fabian better than he did, and of course, the last time, he had talked to Fabian had nearly ended in a fight.

If anyone asked Fabian if he was jealous of Roland and Riley, he would tell them no. Part of him was but another part was glad that she was happy. He had come to the realization when Roland told him about him and her several months ago that it wasn't going to work out. It sank in completely when he saw her at the Auror's meeting and he had done what he was supposed to and just moved on.
He wasn't sure what else he was supposed to say. "Well, I suppose I should be going around and speaking to the others that are here." Fabian stuck his hand out for Roland to shake. It was sort of a peace thing since the last time they talked almost resulted in a fight. "Congratulations to you both." He allowed one of his smiles to spread across his face.

Roland shook Fabian's hand readily. He almost felt like he should apologize to the man for not keeping his promise. He had said he wouldn't do anything about what he was feeling for Riley, then he had turned around and tried for her anyway. Of course, there had also been some rather extreme circumstances involved. Ultimately, Roland couldn't quite bring himself to feel guilty about it, because he and Riley were so good together. But if Fabian had been hurt, he did feel badly about that.
"Hey, no hard feelings, right, mate?" he said hopefully.

"No hard feelings," he said in response. Fabian wasn't on to hold a grudge, plus he didn't really have any good reason to hold a grudge against Roland. What happened between Roland and Riley was bound to happen anyway and Fabian wouldn't have been able to stop anything. It had been obvious that Riley had liked Roland before, he had just decided to be a blind man.
The firm handshake had assured Roland that Fabian didn't hold anything against him. "I'm going to go talk to Ted for a moment. I need to find out if Arthur has said anything to him about him and Molly. She's kept a tight lip about it, I hardly run into Arthur, and I have to find out. I'll talk to you two again before the party is over, alright?"

Riley nodded to him, a tight knot of guilt in her stomach about everything that happened between them. She wished she could make it easier on everyone.
"Make you sure you come say goodbye at least before you leave tonight," she told Fabian, smiling. When he walked away, she decided that Kevin was not a good choice to go to next, since he was standing with Ted and Andromeda, so she squeezed Roland's hand and looked around again.
"Who else do you want to talk to?" she asked, resisting the urge to apologize for the moment with Fabian. She was glad she had finally seen him, though, and been able to talk to him.

Arthur wasn't an auror, but he was such a familiar face in the auror office that he had been invited to the party anyway. He wasn't exactly a partying type, but he was looking forward to it anyway, if only because he'd get to see Roland again. Although Roland was apparently living with Riley now, he had not seen either of them since Roland's triumphant return from the dead.
Dressing in black robes that made his pale skin and red hair stand out even more, Arthur apparated back to the Ministry and walked down the hall to the Auror office. He was entering the room just as Fabian went to talk to Ted, and he immediately caught sight of Roland and Riley. Rushing over to them, he broke into a wide grin. "So it's really true," he said. "I wasn't sure I could believe it until I saw you... welcome back, Roland!"

Hestia shifted uncomfortably where she stood beside the refreshment table. No one had spiked the punch needless to say. She had already had at least 6 drinks and all she felt was bloated. She sighed and scanned the room. She saw one or two familiar faces, but other than that, no one knew her or vice versa. She sighed and sat at one of the tables that was vacant carrying an extra punch in case she got thirsty...

He reluctantly let go of Riley for just a minute to shake hands with Arthur, then slipped his hand back into Riley's. "How've you been? Any luck with that girl of yours.... Molly, wasn't it?" He vaguely remembered Arthur mentioning something about a girl named Molly, that night in the pub. Just because Roland had been caught up in his own problems, didn't mean he was oblivious to everything else that was going on.

Arthur smiled and waved his hand in front of him. "Well, I don't know yet, but at least she's agreed to see me again, so we can talk. So that's something. But really.... look at you two. You look great together. I'm really happy for the both of you."
Roland seemed almost completely transformed, really. He had always seemed so serious, like the weight of the world was on his shoulders. And yet he also had seemed so strong and confident and... well, arrogant. And though the confidence was still there, he was not so serious. There was a light in his eyes that had never been there before. It was a look of a man in love... Arthur had seen it in Ted's eyes, too. He hoped someday Molly would get to see that light in his eyes.
Turning to Riley, he reached out and took her hand. "How are you doing? You look a thousand times better than the last time I saw you."

Riley smiled as Arthur turned his attention to her. "I'm doing really well," she told him, and squeezed his hand. Arthur really was a sweet guy who seemed to never think of himself, but always others.
"You'll have to let us know how things go with Molly. She'd be a fool not to see what a great guy you are, Arthur." She felt like he deserved a really great girl who would love him deeply. Like Roland, she started to feel like everyone deserved wonderful love.

Arthur nodded. "Thank you. I'll be sure to do that," he said. "Ted and Andi have arranged a meeting for us later in the week, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I didn't actually do anything wrong, anyway.... she only broke it off with me because of the breakup between Ted and Andi. Now that they're back together and married, she's got to give me another chance, right?"
Just seeing the two of them together gave him a lot of hope for him and Molly. It sort of seemed like love was in the air, and maybe that would include him and Molly.

"She must be a friend of Andi's," Riley guessed. She had never met Molly, nor was she very close with Andromeda, but she could see an act of loyalty if that was the reason Molly broke up with him. "I'm sure she'll be tripping over her words to appologize to you. Girls can be difficult," she admitted.
She sighed and let go of Arthur's hand. She remembered the scandal behind Ted and Andromeda... But after everything she and Roland had been through in the last couple of months, it felt like ages ago, a different lifetime. And if it was so long ago... Molly wouldn't remember it either, would she?
