Meanwhile, Lydia had been quickly briefed of the situation and headed in to take a look at Riley Neves. Like everyone else, she only knew part of the details, and mostly only knew what had happened to her own patient. That was really all that mattered to her.
She entered the examining room to find two men in the room--one standing silently by, like a sentinel, while the other held on to Riley.
"Hi," she greeted them, looking from one man to the other. "I'm Dr. Kenyon. Any chance you can get her to lie down so that I can examine her?"

Danny looked up and shook her head.
"No, Mr. Weasely here is fine. He may be a bit groggy, but that's all. I just ask that you don't overwhelm him."
She smiled at the both of them and stepped out of the room, nodding slightly. She was never one to get in the way of Ministry work, as long as it didn't compromise the health of her patients.

"Hello, Dr. Kenyon," Ted replied, glancing then at the girl in his arms.
He hadn't pushed it with the nurse, allowing Riley to stay huddled against him, but he knew he would have to disentangle her from him when the doctore came in. Now that the doctor was here, he wasn't sure what to do.
"I don't know," Ted said. "I can try, but she hasn't let go of me since it happened... she's just scared."
He tried for a compromise though, and finally got Riley to sit on the exam table, as long as he sat next to her. Her eyes were open, finally, but she wasn't really looking at anything.
"This has to be good enough," he said. "I'm not going to push her."

Lydia nodded. "It'll do," she said sympathetically.
She approached the table and just evaluated the young woman in front of her. She was deathly pale, which made the dark circles under her eyes stand out in stark relief. She also seemed thin and almost frail. Lydia shook her head. The poor woman had been through an ordeal, and Lydia silently identified with her. According to her chart, she was pretty much alone.
She lit her wand and waved it slowly in front of Riley's eyes, watching for a reaction.
"I understand a killing curse was fired in her direction, but you pushed her out of the way. Do you know if she hit her head on the floor?"

Ted shook his head, watching Riley closely.
"No. I took her down with me... I mean, it's possible, but I doubt it."
Aurors were well trained, afterall, not only in fighting their enemies, but in protecting their own. He tried to avoid injuring her, but it all happened so fast, he couldn't be sure.
Riley's brow creased, but her eyes didn't move, like she was trying hard to stare at one spot. Ted felt for her, but he ached to see Andromeda. It could have just as easily been Andi... he shook the thought from his head before it got much worse.

Lydia frowned. Riley's eyes dilated appropriately, but they didn't follow the light. Instead of the blank, empty stare of someone who was catatonic, she had an almost fixed stare, as if she were focusing very hard on something that no one else could see.
"OK, just let me run a quick check for head wounds."
Using her wand as a scanner, she ran over Riley's head, checking her over. After a couple of minutes, she was positive that Riley had not been injured--at least, not physically. Mentally and emotionally... well, that was another matter altogether.
"Honestly, I think she's uninjured. But she's definitely in shock. I'm not sure there's anything I can really do for her... she just needs time and rest."

"I figured as much," Ted replied quietly. "She can't stay like this, though."
There had been an attempt on her life, which surely meant there would be more. She needed to be alert and ready... and she needed to be protected. He realized with a start that he never saw Riley alone... she always had either Hayden or Geoffrey with her. She knew this could happen.
He thanked Lydia and asked if they could stay in the room for a bit. It was quiet in here, and RIley wouldn't have to worry about anyone bothering her.

Lydia spoke again to Ted, who seemed the most lucid and in control at the moment. The second man, who she thought of as the sentinel, seemed a little shell-shocked himself.
"I'm going to admit her for observation, actually. At least for a little while. At the very least, she needs to be in a quiet, protected environment for a while. If possible, I'd like her to rest. She seems to trust the two of you, so I'm going to allow you both to stay with her."

"I doubt she actually trusts us," Ted said quietly, but he was glad they were keeping her. He had already been wondering what they were going to do with her when they left. He was going to offer to let her stay with him and Andromeda, since she should have more than one person around her at any given time.
"We're going to stay with her for a while," he told Lydia, thanking her again for letting them. "Just... if there's anything you can do for her..."

Lydia nodded. In a way, it almost seemed like Riley was clinging to Ted as a sort of reflex. "I can give her a potion that might help calm her nerves, but I'll probably need your help to get her to drink it. In the meantime, I definitely don't think she should be alone right now, so I'm glad you're staying with her. Is there anyone else we can call for her? A relative, a boyfriend... anything like that?"

Meanwhile, Riley had actually been floating between the little world she had escaped to and the real world. Sometimes, for brief moments, she would be aware of the doctor and Ted next to her. But the majority of the time, she was blocking them out, imagining herself in some place miles away where everything was okay and quiet and peaceful.
But she was semi-lucid for that last question, and while she was still staring hard at that spot, her strained voice replied, "Call Roland."

Ted had been about to answer that there really wasn't anyone else. He knew that much about Riley to know that everyone she had was pretty much already here.... and who she considered family just tried to kill her.
But then Riley spoke up, quietly and broken, and it broke Ted's heart. His eyes met Lydia's and he shook his head. "Roland died," he mouthed. "Let's go ahead and try for that potion," he added. It was be best if they could get Riley to sleep or at least relax, and then wake up and start all of this with a fresh mind.

When she worked, Lydia wore a pretty hard shell, and tried to keep things all business. But moments like these threatened to crack that shell. The strained, broken words, followed by the devastating look and tiny head shake from Ted told her all she needed to know.
Having examined the body found in the warehouse on New Year's Eve, she was quite aware of Roland Ferrera's case. The body may not have been his, but Sean had been relatively certain that the explosion had destroyed Mr. Ferrera's body. So when Riley asked her to call Roland, she didn't even need to tell her that Roland had died. She knew exactly who Riley was talking about.
"I can give her a Draught of Peace," Lydia said, keeping her voice even. "I'll be right back."
She gave Ted a quick nod, then left the room.

In his nineteen years so far, Hayden never thought that he was going to have to go through something like this. Although, it was also the unthinkable that would usually happen. He should have been prepared for anything.
Sighing, Hayden looked at Ted again but hearing Riley tell them to call Roland made his throat tighten and look to her. Poor Riley...
As Dr. Kenyon mentioned that she would get Draught of Peace, Hayden nodded. Riley really did need something to help her rest. It was going to be a long night. Part of him wanted to go check on Geoffrey, but he promised to stay with her.

"Thank you," Ted told the young doctor. How was he supposed to tell Riley that they couldn't call Roland? That Roland was gone, and he couldn't come fix things for her?
He and Hayden would have to do for now, at least until Geoffrey was back to normal... and Riley trusted him again. If it really was the Imperius, it wasn't Geoff's fault, and Riley would know that... but it didn't make it any easier to trust him, or be willing to be alone with him. Actually, she shouldn't be alone with anyone. Not for a while.
"I know she said they were going to keep her here for observation, but we should stay anyway. When she snaps out of this, she shouldn't be alone, and I don't think it's quite safe for her to be with just one person for a while."

Veronica took a little longer meeting up with Andromeda than originally expected. The problem was, she sent the note to Andi, only to receive a reply back that Andi was in the hospital wing at Hogwarts. Veronica quickly rushed over to Hogwarts to find out what was going on. After what had just happened at the Ministry, the last thing Ted needed to hear was that Andromeda was sick or hurt.
But the news turned out to be good, and Andromeda was being released from the hospital wing when Veronica arrived. So it was that the two women walked to the edge of the Hogwarts grounds, then apparated over to St. Mungo's.
Veronica approached the receptionist politely. "Hi, is there a Riley Neves here? We're friends of hers and we were hoping to keep her company."

Hayden didn't mind how long he had to stay. "Yeah, I know," he said. "I don't mind staying. And I agree, she shouldn't be alone with just a single person." He ran a hand over his face. "I'm not sure how we're going to really work that one out." How were they going to work out where Riley was going to stay until this blew over? There was no telling about how it was going to work out. "Have any ideas that we could give her?"

Adrienne hesitated. She knew what had happened to Riley Neves, and none of the staff were wiling to just send anyone in to talk to her. It was too dangerous, and she would be safe here, if nothing else.
But she had been told that one of the men with her was waiting for someone, and she murmured, "Hold on," as she shuffled through some papers. Finally, she held up the note she had written herself. "Can I have your names, please?"

Ted sighed, his arm still around Riley. "I don't know. I don't know how make any of this right by her."
Thinking it over, he said, "I might be able to convince Andi to let her stay with us, just for a couple of days, and I can bring her to work and take her home. But she really shouldn't be working. Not like this, and I wouldn't leave her alone in our apartment. At least at Geoffrey's, there were a lot of people around at any given time. She won't want to go back there right away."

Veronica nodded, understanding the woman's hesitation. "I'm Veronica Massey, and this is Andromeda Tonks. We can wait outside until someone clears us to go in, it's no trouble."
She had been filled in on a little more of what had happened from a few witnesses, but she held back from commenting or reserving judgment on any of it until she had the official story. She had given Andromeda a very basic rundown of what she knew.
